The Great Calcutta Killings was perhaps the worst riot that British India witnessed and it was followed by the Noakhali Riot. Gandhiji landed in Sodepur in August, 1947, to address communal tension and wanted to proceed towards Noakhali, but Suhrawardy requested him to extend his stay in Calcutta. “The situation in Calcutta again became tense in end-August and on September 1, Gandhiji undertook a fast. On September 4, the rioters surrendered their arms at his feet and he finally agreed to break the fast after 73 hours.
