I just had to watch it for the cars if nothing else. "58 Chevy ragtop. '57 Chevy ragtop, early '50s Hudson Hornet, '51 Ford woody wagon, '51 Ford Tudor. '57 Ford cop car. Cars were so easy to identify in those days. Matheau showed a touch of his comedic style in this film as well. Filming a movie? Where's the cameras, the cops should have asked.

Apparently Matheau was nearly broke when he came across the script for this film. He bought it for next to nothing and then churned out the film as fast as he could to make a few bucks. Some of the "sets" are the homes of the crew (non-union).

I like the vintage shots of Orange County. OC was spectacular in the 50's. The acting was almost like that of industrial films of the period and earlier. Had a little trouble with the mix of cars the gangsters drove. Acting and directing are bad, but it has value. I thought the picture quality was good, probably because it didn't get a lot of wear in theaters.

One of the cheapest ways to film is to film first without sound and loop sound, music and dialogue in later. Almost all films loop something. But this is 100% looped. On the other hand, Rex Harrison sang along with the accompanying orchestra filmed live in My Fair Lady. It can be done. It just requires talent. Today’s singers can’t perform live no matter what.

Love Walter Matthau, but that was awful. Ridiculous thefts, librarian falls for bank robber upon first meeting, fellow crook turns him in to the FBI because "he knows too much" ? What? Throw in cornball writing and it was just terrible. I bet even Walter would admit that was trash.

Those days a lot of the vets from both Korea and WWII (the character said he fought at Normandy & Korea) that had seen alot of action who had trouble adjusting back into normal society and they ended up in prison or worse - like this one did. It wasn't their fault, their decency had been destroyed by war. Thanks for the content. Keep up the good work. בס'ד
@yoso585
@yoso585 2 года назад
Well, it could be said that nothing is ever anyones’s fault when we get right down to it. Or that anything is to anyone’s credit. Or that there really even is anyone. But in there somewhere we can be guaranteed a story. And people love a story.
@KelikakuCoutin
@KelikakuCoutin 2 года назад
@@yoso585 Yes, they were drafted - by the government in many cases. Many also enlisted. Some enlisted to avoid the draft as well. When you are getting paid by the government to kill and are rewarded for killing more than the soldier next to you, that usually changes most people for the rest of their lives. It's difficult to lay blame. Let the Ultimate Judge have that responsibility. For some, once they get the taste of human blood it never leaves them, and there's, unfortunately, a thirst that cannot be quenched, when they return to "normal" life. Science will find a cure for it someday, but even now, there are lots of vets who suffer from it, that thirst for violence.

Great movie!!! Loved that "bank robbing' scene, complete w/the cops on hand, right outside the front door!! (Jack called 'em & said he was w/a filmmaking co.& they were going to be rehearsing a bank robbing scene & gave them the address of the bank, & told the sgt or whomever to send a few uniformed dicks down to be "extras" (lol) - so Jack goes right in, the manager rushes in - on cue, as Jack said he would, since he called & said someone had broken into the vault, said that he'd pull up & say "what happened?" and 1 of the cops were supposed to say "in there..." then he'd run inside, then Jack pulled his gun on him, they waited for the time-locked vault to open, then went inside & he stole (just one, damn, I would've taken at least 2 or 3!) a bag of money, walked casually outside, past the cops & says something banal about talking to the director, blah blah blah...and throws the $ in the car then takes off...whoosh! -so fuckin' smooth!!!

They didn't meet on the set, they met several years earlier when both of them were in "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" on Broadway. Matthau had a leading role and Carol had a small part as a secretary named "Miss Logan" (which incidentally is also her name in this movie). "Gangster Story" was directed by Matthau and obviously done on the way cheap so I'm sure getting his wife the role wasn't too difficult.

A modest question: Where is the film crew? Three policemen watching an alleged shooting of a film but no cameraman, no director, no script girl, no lighting, no microphones, no boom operator, no you name it. Rehearsal or no rehearsal, not even the director is there. But despite its unlikely plot I liked the film nonetheless, since Walter Matthau is in it. Negligently throwing a moneybag on the back seat and telling the cops: "This thing is getting out of hand", or "Mary Harper-Lewis? Oh, I don't particularly care for her style of writing" (books on gardening, that is.

I have always liked Walter Matthau since I was about 6 years old when my father took me to see "The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three". I will remember as Lt. Zach Garber with the bright cool yellow tie & the plaid shirt and particularly at the end when he catches Martin Balsam (who talks crap about a man's rights and sneezes" and Garber goes "Gethunseit" and Garber had alway had to say this while he was talking to the train robbers and he return to the the guys apartment w/ that look on his face

To me, the best part of the movie was the gangster car a 1950 to 53 HUDSON HORNET. We had a Hudson super 6 and then later in 52 or 53 we got a Hornet 4 door. Our dad used to say it "cornered great" It had a luxurious interior we used to show off to our neighbors. I was sorry when he traded it in. But I have great memories of our Hudson.
