Gannets take the gold medal for diving. A streamlined approach ensures that the birds gain maximum acceleration as they plunge towards the water, eventually breaking the surface at almost 100 kilometres per hour. They are perfectly adapted for this specialised hunting technique that allows them to target shoals of bait fish swimming just below the surface.
