This gap wedge comparison video focuses on a common discussion that takes place in many 2nd Swing golf club fittings. Should you play a traditional or set gap wedge? Ideally, this gap wedge comparison video will help golfers dial in their short games and hit better shots with the gap wedge they choose.
2nd Swing's Drew Mahowald is joined by master club fitter Kevin Kraft to test and review four different types of gap wedges for this gap wedge comparison. Featured is a Titleist SM9 gap wedge, Cleveland CBX ZipCore gap wedge, Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal gap wedge, and TaylorMade Stealth HD gap wedge. How do the numbers compare between these different gap wedges?

I’m a set GW player (Mizuno JPX 923). I like to play partial and full shots with it and I prefer how it blends/performs with my PW. I play more feel shots with my SW and LW so naturally, those are specialty wedges.

Just got fit today and had this conversation. In the end, I got Cobra King Forged CB 5-PW with Cleveland RTX6 Zipcore 50, 54, 58. Not at all what I had in mind going in to the fitting.

Nice video! I’ver never used a specialty gap wedge. Always the set wedge. I like it bc it’s definitely a full swing club, but I will chip around green with it

I play the P790 irons with PW at 44 and set GW at 49. I tried a 48 degree RTX 6 in place of the set gap wedge and loved it for pitch shots and chips around the green, but didn't have the consistency on the full swing compared to the set gap wedge. The set gap wedge is a little too hot of the face on pitches and chips. Just ordered a CBX 4 at 48 degrees to hopefully get the happy medium between set gap wedge and blade wedge.

For the first time ever I am using a set GW, the short irons and PW in the Cobra King CBs just perform and look amazing, I initially tested a 50 degree Titleist Vokey SM9 but the distance gap was slightly too big while the 50 degree Cobra King CB GW was just perfect so I added it to the bag.

Interesting findings guys. Once again though, fitting is critical in the process of shaping one's bag. It's not a simple "one size fits all" solution with with the gap wedge.

I think everyone should be playing a forgiving gap wedge with a ton of bounce. My CBX2 is so good for balls in divots, soft turf, wet turf, and plugged lies. I play regular mid bounce samd and lob wedges, but gaps are a great place to go cavity back.

I'm here to throw in a 3rd option! I play: Cleveland Zipcore 60° + 55° Cobra King MB 50° + 46° Titleist T100S Irons, bent 2° weak (42° 9 Iron) I like my PW + GW to be a bit more iron like as they are full swing clubs. But blade set wedges help to smooth the transition between my irons and "specialist" SW +LW

I have a mizuno gap wedge that came with my iron set. Honestly I don’t think I’d ever want to go for a bladed wedge. I freaking love it, it’s easy to hit, and the yardage is spot on every time

My last set of clubs (Ping G10) I had 3 through 9, then W,U, S & L wedges. When I changed them last year for Ping i525, I went 5 through 9 and bought the Glide 4.0 wedges 46, 50, 54 & 60. Much better control with the scoring clubs in this setup. Not many (if any) sets go through to Lob wedge anymore.

The sound of that SM9 was sweet. More solid, no cavity in back makes a cool sound in my opinion.

Around the greens I generally use the wedge/club the shot calls for, but if in doubt I go with the gap wedge. The last fifteen years or so I always buy the iron set with 5 through gw, as I have keep using my trusty Solus sand and lob wedge from a long time ago, trust is something I stay with. PS I'm on my third set of Solus sand and lob wedge heads as the very soft faced forged iron heads do wear. PS I bought extra Solus heads long ago so as to add new heads when the face and grooves finally wear to much.

Are the callaway cb wedges the same as playing the gap wedge from the set since they are both cavity backed clubs? Does one have an advantage over the other?

I play mg4 50,54,58 along side my jpx 923 tours, and my only issue with my gap wedge at the moment is i feel when I hit it a groove low, it spins obviously a lot more than when I used to play a GW built into my set.

Since the New gap wedges are 48* (ie T150) same as old Pw, I use the club set as you mentioned for mostly Full shots. Then at 52 and 56 or 54 and 60, I use Vokeys so I can mess with them a lot more.

If you play a 42* game improvement PW you probaly need the matching set GW (~48*) as well as a 'traditional" GW at 52*....
@xBlade173
@xBlade173 4 месяца назад
Yep. Just play them like they are 1 club softer. 42 being a 9i, 48 being a PW. Also assume that set only goes to a 5i that plays like a 4i.

You focus on the TM spin, but say nothing about the descent angle. Hello? At 52 plus descent, that spin is of secondary concern.

I want an RTX6 wedge with a small cavity and 10+10 grams of tungsten in toe and heel. Same size and shape, just some extra forgiveness built in. The CBX wedges are just too big in 54 and 58 for me. A CBX in 50 is perfect..

The GW with the set is always hotter I feel like. Learning curve with little bump and runs and chip shots v performance wedge that is better controlled. Softer feel

The need for a specialty wedge is more for manipulating the clubface more open or closed, especially on non full shots, where there is a definite requirement for special grinds and bounce. If you play full shots only or even partial shots with no excessive opening of the clubface, there is no need for a specialty wedge. For most golfers, this applies often to gap wedges (48° to 50°).
@Fitter4life
@Fitter4life 4 месяца назад
I don’t know about you but a gap wedge is typically played for full shots maybe bump and runs. You shouldn’t be manipulating the face on them. That’s what sw and lob wedge are for

Taking wedges for every possible lie in the bag is stupid - my opinion. The reason is simple, there will be always a situation you could use a other wedge maybe di that you nevertheless have the complete range of wedges, maybe if you take 14 of them with you, with mivh or less bounce, loft, lie angle. I take a 46/47 PW a 51/52 GW and a 56/58 SW/LW with me. Which 56/58 i decide on the conditions and circumstances, whether there are firm and clean positioning to play or not, whether there is mich our lesson stand in bunkers, whether it is summer or organization winter. One edge for all shots is enough, Ballesteros never had a other wedge than a 56 SW.
