This garage conversion in Stoke-on-Trent will transform a once cluttered garage into a wonderful, warm living space.
In this video, John describes:
🔵 How to insulate a garage floor
🔵 Why some garage conversion need to be underpinned
🔵 Why you MUST consult your Building Inspector before getting quotes
Converting a garage is a great option if you're looking for to create a bit more space - and, of course, add value to your property.
Laura Higgins, Media Relations Manager at Virgin Money, reports that:
"If you have off-road parking and depending on where you live, you may find converting a garage can significantly increase your home's value - by as much as between 10 and 15 percent."
So a garage conversion can certainly be an investment as well as means of getting that extra room you desire.
It's also a more affordable alternative to an extension. And another option if you want to gain more space without the stress of moving home.
This garage conversion in the beautiful area of Werrington, Staffordshire, will consist of fully insulated floor, roof and stud walls.
The former garage door at the front of the garage will be removed and bricked up leaving space for a window. New access to the garage will be created internally via a door leading from the existing hallway.

Great video, my only comment is, its usually best to get the building inspector involved at the foundation stage, because they can advice on how deep they want the footings for the front wall, and it will save any unnecessary underpinning works afterwards.

Totally agree, Wayne. However, you can't always get the Building Inspector to come out when you want them to - and if you're on a tight deadline, sometimes you just have to crack on. Thanks for watching our video, we genuinely appreciate it 👍

Great information on that. I am starting a job like this and the building inspector said the same thing. Was shocked but thought if there is an issue it is on his head, not mine.

Hi Michael. Thanks for watching and for your kind words 😀👍 Yes, it's always best to find out exactly what the Building Inspector expects to see, as opinions do differ. However, if you're creating a new habitable space, the Building Inspector would be involved from the outset anyway.

A small observation , you have bridged the DPC & you should tape the butt joints on the PIR foam insulation.

Hi Jan. Thanks for watching our video. This project - and every other project we undertake - is signed off by a Building Inspector.

This is so helpful! Thanks for the video. Could you out ply or caberfloor on top of your insulation boards? Then something like LVT on top? Would that satisfy regs?

We have a membrane at the fron of the garage that is two bricks off the floor and the rear garage wall, the membrane is 4 bricks. Just the rear wall is higher for the ,membrane. Can a conversion still be done as the garage floor is level and concrete.if I just want to turn it into a kitch with units on wall and a car has been parked in the garge,then surly the floors more than ok. Do you have to insulate a concrete floor as all this makes the floor to ceiling height tight.

Hi, I am looking at knocking the wall down between the kitchen and the garage to make the kitchen bigger. The garage floor is approx 20mm below the kitchen floor. What woukd you suggest to do to thr garage floor to ensure it is at the same height as the kitchen floor and insulated?

Could you not have made the mix of mortar darker?
@HYPEBuilding
@HYPEBuilding Год назад
Hi Steven. Thanks for watching and for your question 👍 The mortar just isn't weathered, that's all. Eventually it will look the same. In other projects, we have repointed the entire front so that it matches, but on this occasion, the owner didn't want us to do this. On another note, a good way to speed up the weathering process is to use natural yoghurt due to its bacteria content.

I currently have a single wall brick garage and am looking to insulate it enough to prevent things getting damp inside. What would I need to do in this situation? Will insulating the walls be enough? I have no idea what I'm doing but from a quick search I will need some form of moisture barrier and then insulation then some board to keep it in place. Will that be sufficient?
@HYPEBuilding
@HYPEBuilding Год назад
Hi Brandon. Thanks for your questions. We would recommend that you erect a stud wall 50mm from the existing wall and insulate it with 75mm insulation. Then cover the stud wall with plasterboard, wood or another finish of your choice. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching our video, we really appreciate it 🙂👍

Is it possible to do a garage conversion in a terraced house where one of the garage walls is shared with another house?
@HYPEBuilding
@HYPEBuilding Год назад
Hi Henrique. Thanks for watching and for your question. Yes, there's no reason you can't convert your garage if this is the case. Just bear in mind that you will need a party wall agreement if you intend to do any invasive drilling or a damp course etc. on the party wall. If not, you should be fine. Hope that helps.
