Switching out the glass in a garage door to something a little more decorative. Website:www.allproqgd.com (Like us on Facebook@) "All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc".
Yep, you got the market cornered, I suppose if enough folks needed it done I might design a portable jig or template or really put some time into figuring out a better way or something but realistically I get maybe 1-2 calls a year for that. But it is one of the reasons I carry Wayne Dalton...even their non insulated door has screw on frames. There you go Qwasy...invent an adjustable metal jig that tightens the two sides at the same time then adjusts top to bottom.
Not me man...I've been in this biz since 1985 and am normally considered "old School" but I would dump the entire order in the dumpster or sell it to one of my suppliers before I would spend the next 5yrs pulling my hair out over broken glass. My motto is "crap is crap" but I hear what your saying and sometimes ya just gotta Git-R-Done!! But I really do hate to deal in frustration, I like quality products that work.
First you have to identify the brand and model of your door. With that information you can locate and call the mfg and see if they can locate a dealer near by.
Great videos and thank you.. One quick question, my garage door windows has the same pattern inserts with I believe the same size. One of them broke along with the glass by a basketball. I've been looking online to order a replacement insert by cannot find it. Please tell me where did you ordered yours from? Thank you and stay blessed !
I like the glass, but I think it would have been better without the grid. The glass has a really neat pattern to it, and that (what I've always known as "sunburst") hides a fair chunk of that detail in the glass. I give WD credit, that's far easier than the snap in retainers the OHD's I used to install had. Those would have to be cut out to change glass, and new retainers installed.
I have a clopay window that was broken. It is insulated and I want to replace on my own. After I take out the broken one, is there something that seals the glass in the door before you screw it in, like caulk?
Ablivewire Not usually caulk, most screw on frames have a thin foam around the inside edges molded to the frame that will keep out water, if by some remote chance your dealer did the windows himself and supplied generic frames then it wouldn't hurt to run a bead of silicone caulking along the inside edge of the outer frame but that's rare...you should be good to go.
All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc. Thanks for your input! I appreciate you getting right back to me. Should I take the panel off to replace it? Most videos I have seen show them being replaced with the panel off. If so, is it pretty easy to take off a panel. I am pretty sure I just have to unscrew the hinge and roll it off (since it is the top panel). Is it as easy as it looks? Any tips? I have a clopay insulated window and it cost 217.00 at home depot for just the glass. I am thinking about replacing myself to save any additional labor fee of a garage door repairman. Is it that simple?
I think it will be that easy.But...just tape the corners of the outside frame so it doesn't fall out when you remove the screws and leave the section in place. That will be much easier than removing it. Try a glass store, they might be cheaper on the glass.
Make sure to put on at least one pair of vise grips above a roller and clamped to the track when you pull off that top section. The springs will still want to lift the door as it did previously and will fly up when the weight is changed if not secured. It's easy to damage panels if not done correctly
Nice video. The window was broken. My garage door window frame does not have screws on the inside or outside of the garage door? Could the frame snap together? I don't want to break it? Thoughts?
IT Tech you have snap on retainers... when you remove them on the inside they can easily be ruined, i would use a heat gun to soften em up before trying to pull them off then heat em up again when putting them back on. It will be a lesson in frustration so get a slightly thicker piece of glass so you dont have to press the retainers on quite as far this time. Good luck be patient and go slow.
Amen to that brother!! If the retainers are the pound on style i just won't do it, the few times I have done it I bring out alot of extra glass and heat the retainers slightly with a heat gun. Other than that...forget it!!
I have a similar door and would like to remove the insert permanently. Is it as simple as pulling the insert out as demonstrated or will I need a spacer to keep the glass in place?
It might be a while before you see me strap up and go out in the field again but if one of my guys takes a vacation and I gotta back him up...consider it done.
Yea...it wasn't my choice of inserts that's for sure. I think I would have gone without any design and just showed all glass if it were going in my house.
THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING. YOU TUBE ONLY HAS VIDEOS ON REPLACING GARAGE DOOR GLASS ON UNITS THAT HAVE SCREWS. MEANWHILE 99.99% OF ALL GARAGE DOOR GLASS IS INSTALLED WITH NO SCREWS. NO VIDEOS ON HOW TO TAKE THOSE OUT.
I understand. Sounds like a hell of a mess. I think read something from you a year or two ago about using a heat gun and even then it would be tough. The glass is already broken. The question is whether I can hold it in place with anything. What have I got myself into? Thank you for your input though. Sincerely Completely f@#ked Handyman
Mitch Mabee easiest way is slightly thicker glass, heat the retainer, press it as far as it will go then run some silicone adhesive in the remaining gaps to keep the glass from rattling. It’s a real pain but it’s doable.
who cut the hole out? It looks terrible. You over tightened the inside moulding you can see that where the screws are. There should not be a depression. Why put in those ugly inserts in, they cover up most of the beautiful glass.
The mfg cut the holes, we just swapped the factory glass for what the customer wants, they wanted seeded glass and inserts. One persons trash is another persons treasure.
