A couple of tips: *Sleeve the radiator. It can save many hundreds of $$, and the sleeve cost pennies. *Fabricate a drip shield that mounts over the drivers side engine mount. The lift (primer) pumps leak just a very tiny amount of diesel . That diesel drips onto the rubber engine mount. I’ve seen the mount deteriorate and have to be replaced in a matter of weeks. I have no idea what happens to the factory drip shield, but never seen a used model with the shield still in the car. Maybe I should begin to fabricate and sell drip shields, and soft polyurethane left side engine mounts.

I have watched this video probably 5 times. It was a big help in adjusting the valves on my '82 240D today! Took most of the day, but I like to go slow and double/triple check things. Two of them were extremely tight and way out of adjustment. I took the glow plugs out and used the power steering pulley to turn the engine, it worked great and I got to check the condition of the flow plugs. Next, I will install new nozzles. It drove better and seemed to have more power after the valve adjustment. Thanks for the video!

Beautiful vehicle, Sir. I have owned a total of three 240Ds - two I ended up selling. For the one I have remaining, I plan to keep and maintain it as well as possible. I may end up getting another one sometime (the one I have now is an automatic; I want a manual transmission - and I don't yet have the skillset to swap out transmissions). Love live the 240Ds and 300Ds!

It may sound crazy, but you can adjust the valve clearance by holding the cap nut with the "third wrench" (by Hazet), then turn the top nut down to loosen, or bring the bottom one up to tighten.

I like this video. I saw that the word overhaul didn't necessarily mean overhaul of the complete motor, which is good. These cars and their motors are much easier to work on and fix but the motors themselves are very tricky to re-build just right so that the whole motor would last another 200,000-300,000 miles afterward. That's another reason why I would never try to have one of those motors re-built, nor would I want one with a re-built motor. I'd like to have in my car collection one of those cars that has lived up to the reputation of them being cars that run forever, like 500,000+ miles. It would have to have high original miles and still starting up quickly and maybe still no excessive oil consumption. That's hard to find, but if I'm unable to keep my 2004 Jaguar XJ8 due to too many expensive repairs, then I'll seriously look for one and then go back to one of those W123s. Where I live, in Western Washington, the 300D turbodiesels are looking to me like they'd be my best bet. They seem to have a higher survival rate where I'm at than the 300D non-turbos. Yep there the best non-S-Class Mercedes ever made. And I don't know if I'd ever have any other Mercedes sedan, because the real gutsy V-8 powered ones that are German Muscle-Cars; they're far more complicated and 10 times harder to keep up with as far as costs of ownership.

I have '76 240D that I inherited from family. I will admit my knowledge of mechanics is amateur, but I'd love to be able to begin to work on the vehicle myself. OP or anyone else have a path of suggestion towards learning mechanics and learning to work on my 240D? I know there are countless amounts of resources out there, but its information overload out there too, and so it's good to have mentorship every once and awhile. Cheers everyone!
@takeiteasy_tv
@takeiteasy_tv 6 месяцев назад
Nice! Congrats :) I got my start as a mechanic just reading forums and figuring it out as I go. Google is an amazing tool! Of course, start easy and don't do anything too complicated or dangerous (i.e. brakes). You might even take it to a local Mercedes shop and have them do a full inspection. This will give you a laundry list of fixes and they might offer you some advice too.

Consider buying the nicest and newest 240D you can find. I’m not sure about the W123, but it’s possible they switched steel suppliers in 1980. The Belgian steel tended to be prone to rust. True or folk legend… not sure. Also the newer cars had an external clutch slave. That can turn a day job into a five minute job.

I really enjoy your mercedes videos. I'm looking at buying a 1983 300D, and although it's in great shape, it will obviously need some work. For instance, the driver window doesn't work, and I'm not sure if it's the regulator, motor, or both. Do you about how much it would cost (ballpark number) to fix it if it's both the regulator and motor? I've watched some DIY videos on it but it would probably be wiser to get someone else to do it. Thanks!

I liked your video I am considering buying one of these cars today actually and it looks a lot like yours it has some issues with the sunroof though in the passenger door motor for the electric window is defective I was wondering if you could provide a little bit of wisdom about how to change that door motor and possibly the electric motor for the sunroof I also need some tips on what might be involved in getting all new rubber for the doors the windows and especially the sunroof as it leaks. Thanks look look forward to hearing from you.
@takeiteasy_tv
@takeiteasy_tv 3 года назад
Hi there, the sunroof motor is in the trunk - if you have someone listen while you hit the switch, they might be able to tell you if it's trying or not. If the motor is working, then it's likely that it's all gummed up and there is too much friction for it to open (I have to close mine by hand in the winter months because of this). Mercedessoruce sells a good kit to clean up the system and get it working again :) replacing the seal seems to be difficult, I need to do that as well.

Hi. Have MB 240 D. The instrument panel lights has gone off. Can I fix that myself? Im glad I found your video.
@takeiteasy_tv
@takeiteasy_tv 3 года назад
Yes definitely! I believe you have to take the steering wheel off first (pry out the MB emblem and remove the large nut - make sure the wheels and steering wheel are straight). Then just pull the instrument cluster out, and you'll have to remove the speedometer cable and the oil pressure tube, put a cloth down to catch the oil drips. Then you just need to pull each bulb out and replace them, they are tiny!
@maxwellspeedwell2585
@maxwellspeedwell2585 11 месяцев назад
There is a tutorial online for replacing your incandescent bulbs with LED. Also line the light boxes with aluminum foil. DO NOT drive the car with the instrument panel out. You will get a lap-full of oil.

My 1980 240d manual runs great. Cranks in cold easily even without glow plugs activated. Leaks oil from a lot of gaskets. Must fix that. But....in a steep driveways or steep roads it will NOT start off. No clutch slippage. Just won't. But, on highway it will run at least 85 mph. Surely Mercedes didn't design a car with this limitation? I see super steep Alpine roads and driveways, parking lots etc... and as a taxi....how could this work in a steep mountain city? So...what's the deal? Any tips? Is this normal for a 240d manual? Thanks

Very informative. . I have a 76 240D and a 78 300D in Australia. I notice you do not put the Bonnet ( Hood ) to its full open position. Saves many a bumped head when it is at ninety degrees to the rest of the car. I have an extra belt to change , as it was a popular option to have the Self Leveling Rear suspension fitted here on saloons. My 76 had the old Gorilla three position pull start knob. But I converted to modern glow plugs and a press button start. These W123 progress slowly up to a happy 110 Klm per hour cruising. You can feel the days stresses melt away when behind the wheel. Look forward to more posts.

I’m sorry what did you say for the Main Vacuum pump why do you need to rotate the engine to install back on ?
@takeiteasy_tv
@takeiteasy_tv 6 месяцев назад
It's hard to describe, but basically the vacuum pump is "gear" driven so you have to align the engine gear with the pump gear. You should be able to figure it out when you're looking at it.

Be careful not to over tighten the valve adjusting nuts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YrooIsR-_dY.html When installing the power steering belt, I put the belt on the pulley as far as I can and then "bump" the starter and the belt will slip right on. You have a good old 240D there, but I would keep that damn cat off of it.

TaktEasy_EasyTV: Sounds like your're predictable (Milllenial) smitten by the 3-Pointed Star (by crafty Billions of US dollars after advertising/marketing over the decades );but a Peugeot :504,505 604 with Peugeot Indenor Diesel beats Mercedes Benz in Diesel technology and in noise suppression from entering the passenger....more importantly Ride Quality. The W123 feels like a 1960s/1970s Ford/Chevy/Dodge pickup compared to the 504,604,505 Unibody Structure. FYI: even the old -school Mercedes Diesels were "Fake" diesels.......................built off the robust 4-6 cylinder Gas engine-ed;but with an different head and Low-Pressure Rotary Injection Pump added.FYI Peugeot Indenors are True Diesels(built as a clean sheet Engineered Diesel),it's why you seen them in service in every conceivable service from Local Municipal Generators, to auxiliary Ship Service ) then and extant.........................Mercedes Fake Diesels? Not a chance in hell! Although Peugeot sold the Rights(for the Indenor Diesels) to BMW (under Licensing Royalty-Agreement); Volvo-Penta, Mahindra,Ford,etc. and even Mercedes-Benz is able to dupe consumers for buying an engine that is not their own. More FYI.....every MINI 4-Pot that comes off the line is a Peugeot 4 Pot.............so much for German Engineering...............LMAO!

@petercollingwood522 4 года назад
That's one of the funniest and most laughable rants I've ever read on line. My family were addicted to Peugeot's when I was growing up. Happily I'll never have to endure crap like that ever again. I'm on my second 240D and owned several other Mercedes before them and to compare weird French junk to a Mercedes is truly laughable. But whatever floats your boat dude.
@dmcnamara9859

Peter Collingwood: Maybe you and your family were the recipients/participants of neglect of a vehicle by "supposed" technicians working on a :403-604 old school rear-drive. They are very easy vehicles to work on (as long as you have common sense). I have a 87 505 wagon that was used as a ill-maintained delivery vehicle for 20 years+years ( 650,000+ miles when I got it).......with the internet,wear replacement parts are dirt cheap.....only major concerns (over time) have been the German Sourced OEM components which have been replaced with old-school American /Japanese pieces. You know how much Peugeot charges with freight for a Wagon Torque-Tube U-Joint? $500.00+ USA dollars.............. how much did a Drive-Line shop charge me for a new U-joint.....with a hole drilled to easily fit in the German ZF Tranny? $100.00 with shipping. For the record,Mercedes has always used vibration ready drive-shafts (exposed to the elements) with rubber joints as their way of delivering parasitic draw of Torque to the rear-axle. Mercedes FWD Platforms sold Globally are complete piles of S7it.......shows the power of Marketing and how consumers duped by crafty Advertising will pay $60,000+ for a Front Wheel Drive car with a 3-Pointed at the front Maybe your family was smitten by the 3-Pointed Star....and failed to acknowledge Mercedes Products have been POSs for many decades(going back to the 1970s ).................it's why even Toyota's "fake luxury" Division here in the USA clobbers everyone else in the Crossover Depot with the RX350 (assembled in Canada) which sell for $75,000 fully loaded-up with gimmicks (in-expensive to the Toyoda Family when purchased/made in-house in bulk).........not bad for for a Camry-based Platform which can be had here in the low 20s with discounts

@@dmcnamara9859 Dude! Seriously whatever you're smoking, keep it up. Clearly it's working for you. Your're worth your weight in gold as entertainment I'll give you that. I recall at least eight Peugot's my family had whille I was a thru my young adult years. From 203's, thru 403's, 404's and 504's. Owned by my parents and various uncles and cousins. Happily when I was able to afford a car of my own I was able to pick up my first of five Mercedes. Not new of course. I've never owned one younger than ten years old. My first was a 71 108 280S. Never looked back. As for your comments on Front wheel drive Mercedes. I wasn't aware such mutants existed. Unless you mean some A class POS or some other kind of modern abberation. I quite agree. I wouldn't waste a cent on a new Mercedes. Nor for that matter on any Toyota. Of any year, ever. If TakeitEasy ever reads these comments I doubt he's in danger of following your path. He's a mechanical engineer and likes well put together gizmos and gadgets and such. So he'll "get" classic Mercedes, just like I do. But I'll bet he'll never bother with futzing around with Peugeots. There's a reason the term "German engineering" entered the lexicon. On the other hand "French engineering ..." nuff said.

Peter Collingwood: Even back in Mercedes hay-day era 1970s and prior to the 190 Release.........Honda would blow them away in build quality.Honda was doing 1 panel exterior Sidewalls long before anyone else (Mercedes included)........every exterior panel Stamping absolutely flawless with Swiss-Watch like tolerances and gaps.
