Big Bertha on Tour

CORRECTION: Near the beginning I say it now has an ST front end, that was the vocal equivalent of a typo...it's an R80GS front end.
This video is a technical walk round of my R80G/ST (originally an 1982R80ST). I've been using this bike for off-road racing, greenlaing, tours around Europe and as transport for my job as a professional photographer. I've tried to stay true to the style & feel of it's era, while making the bike my own individual piece.
This video is quite long with a lot of talking, not really designed as an entertainment, but I'm hoping in there I answer lots of questions people might have about airhead off-road builds and also converting an R80ST. Below are the chapters incase your interested in a specific part:
00:00 Intro
00:40 Front end - R80ST to R80GS fork conversion, including front wheel, disc & top yokes
02:46 Tommaselli Offroad Handlebars & Wunderlich bar raisers
03:39 Footpegs - Lower footpeg brackets from Hyperpro + KTM 690 Footpegs
05:43 Brake & gear lever adjustments
07:43 Bash plate / Sump guard + G/S Sump & Pickup
08:50 Hyperpro G/S rear shock with remote reservoir (air thingy)
09:58 Why remote reservoir shocks are better
10:42 Metzeler M/C 360 & Michelin Anakee Wild review
11:57 R80GS Tank fitted to R80ST
12:22 R80G/S Paris Dakar seat and rear rack
13:13 BMW R80ST original exhaust system plus heat shield
14:38 R80ST 800cc Engine for offroading
15:46 How to lockwire BMW airhead carb float bowls
16:44 Left hand side stand and the horrendous BMW R80ST original
17:57 Thanks for watching!

Very nice information, thanks a lot. I‘m myself driving the 1991 gs and also had the shit in my pants because of the sidestand auto-snap situation. I‘ve had the sidestand modulated with a new spring set up and some welding. It works great even with the default sidestand.

During the mid 1980s when I attended the Sydney Institute of Technology, I'd park my BMW R65LS near a BMW R80GS. I'd check it out and could never work out the purpose of this bike. Road bike, dirt bike, scrambler. What was it? Today, I'd have one at the blink of an eye.

Also based In Wales and have started modifying a cs 100 into some sort of Dakar Rep, but have come to the reality that I want something to use. Just strengthening the frame at the moment, be interested to know what options are best for the fork conversion, DRz is an interesting option

The hyperpro guys in Holland all ride pretty heavy duty trials with theirs and they all do DRZ400 conversion so they can’t be too far wrong. GS front end wasn’t a huge improvement although made it a bit more rideable off-road

@@bigberthaontour I am not the original commenter, but still wanted to give my two cents. The owners of HPN (Halbfeld and Pepperl) once tested all exhaust setups out there. The most beneficial exhaust setup is the SR-Racing exhaust (once sold by Siebenrock as SGS2). Forbthe other exhaust setups they found out that the original exhaust collector is the best power wise. A Y-tube on the other hand will drop the weight significantly. You save around 2 kg and another kg by not having dirt collect on the collector while riding in muddy terrain.
