Garbage Trucks: A Summer Afternoon in NYC

Experience the sights (but luckily not smells) of a stroll through Midtown Manhattan in July, with a decided focus on the different garbage trucks doing their thing.
Featured first is a late model Loadmaster LM-400, essentially the "demolition carter special." This one has a particularly smooth tipper for 1/2 yard A-frame cans and a raised hopper sill to help keep things neat and tidy. Chassis is a Mack Granite. The whole thing is done up in a stunning red, a color I'm normally not fond of on trucks but it works really well here. However Statewide Demolition earns a demerit for the gaudy ass wheel simulators.
What follows is the first of two Progressive Waste McNeilus rear loaders. These things are wonderfully easy to find and film by virtue of their universally laid back crews. That's not to say unprofessional, their strict adherence to company policies and rules is evident in the video. Great care is taken as to when the packer is run, when not to stand near the hopper, how bins are moved, etc. This particular McNeilus is a bit special with the ACX chassis and old IESI branding.
Working the same section of street as IESI, the Vanquish LM-400 makes a second appearance on the georgewuzheer channel. This one rides some form of the Volvo WG/Autocar ACL; can't remember which. It has a nice whine during the pack cycle and a “looser” tipper than the Statewide truck.
Next is another Progressive McNeilus, this time a MRU in the current colors. This was waste from a Chipoltle restaurant, the other bins at the stop were labeled as such. There's a bit of entertaining squirting and bag popping as the blade retracts at the end of the clip but by all means tame by New York restaurant waste standards.
Last but far from least is a decked out Mack Granite/2RII from Signature Interior Demolition, caught packing out on the last A-frame can of the day. As always thanks to all the drivers, filmed July 30th, 2013.

04:36 Loading sections of 4" cast iron sewer pipe! Demolition hauling is the ultimate in severe duty for a refuse truck. Sad that we just missed the era when the Heil Mark V would have been in the mix.

Great video! Enjoyed seeing some of the different trucks in NYC! Those Loadmasters are pretty badass! Nice drive by in the background at 5:13. I hope to see more from NY, I hope you got some footage of DSNY!

When I watch video's like this, I always ask myself why there could not be an easier system to attach the bins. nice video though

iIm guessing the one in the back you were filming was just hauling scrap metal while the truck in front of it was doing the c&d.

Good stuff! You know how fond I am of Demolition trucks! I believe I have found the Statewide truck on Google Maps lol Truck looked awesome and the high hopper was pretty neat. Packer looks powerful too, perfect for demolition. Had to laugh when the NYPD pulled someone over in the first clip. Must be hard working those streets with soooo much traffic. The IESI truck was nice. I heard Progressive sold some of their assets in NYC to Winter Bros. Anyway, strange to see ACX in the Big Apple lol Usually don't see a cab so new. I've seen maybe two ACX's on Maps out there. 3:37 was cool! Three trucks on one street! Man traffic must have been slow lol Do the Vanquish trucks always work in pairs? Haha you know you've filmed a lot of trucks when you can't remember the chassis! Signature truck was cool. Enjoyed the loose material in the container. Great to see more NY from you! Always enjoy your uploads George, never fails to impress :D

***** Glad you like the vid, and glad someone else also appreciates these demolition packers. The police car was actually just trying to get through the traffic, just behind where I was standing is a NYPD station as well as one of the busier FDNY stations. Makes for an entertaining streetscape. IDK if they always work in pairs but all the demolition haulers separate out scrap metal, requiring either a second truck or a second trip. Usually the 1/2 cans are prefilled then brought out to the street to wait for the truck, but at this job the trucks hung out at the curb as the cans were filled one or two at a time. Don't worry, lots and lots more NY trucks to come!

Hard not to love those Loadmasters, especially with A frame tippers all crushing through construction debris. Their monstrous blades seem to fit their application quite well. Cool to see the ACX next to that Loadmaster, like a contrasting old vs. new scene. Those carts look like a pain to unload. too bad they can't put loops or something on them to stuck a bar through to be able to tip them like a dumpster, similar to those triangle bins you filmed in Florida. Do they carry those with them to get bagged stops? Love that Vanquish LM-400 powering through scrap metal. Definitely would be interesting to see it unload after packing out. The guy running the level seems like such a typical new yorker haha and nice 2RII that flew past. That Signature truck sure looks nice with the grey color, just needs a good wash. As much as I love the 2R-II, it sure seems to struggle with demolition waste, though being that it just packed out wouldn't make it a fair comparison. Would be interested in what kind of load the LM-400 can pack against a 2R-II. Amazing post, as always.

Garbage Trucks AZ The carts were used to handle "walk-up" stops where the crew would go inside the building to pickup loose waste which I suppose couldn't be easily handled otherwise with dumpsters, and for whatever reason wasn't brought out to the curb by the customer. I saw that particular IESI truck handle a few stops, and the carts magically appeared about halfway through, so I would guess they get stored somewhere on route, shuttled between a number of stops in the truck's hopper, then returned back to their original home for the next day's pickup. The driver of the Vanquish truck was quite the character, you can hear him singing at 2:45 lol. Not sure where you see the 2R-II struggling, just packed out. Check out my Cardella Waste vid for more 2R-II on similar waste. The two packers are just about as even as it gets, and have the demolition packer neatly split between them. Newer trucks seem to favor the Loadmaster, I would guess the change in Leach's ownership to Labrie could have something to do with it. In any case I'm not complaining. The NYC demolition scene may be a niche application but the venerable 400 is thriving in that niche.

Awesome video! Definitely a lot of construction waste in NYC. The Signature truck sounded absolutely great. Can't wait to hopefully get some footage of these and DSNY's trucks this coming week when I'm there! I assume its not hard to find these guys at all?

Oh how I love NYC demolition action, beast packers on beast trucks doing beast work :P Our demo and construction stuff over here is no fun - just a hook-lift and an open top container :( Can't get over those 400 blades, love how nuclear-bomb-proof they're built and that the sweep blade is bigger than the slide plate haha Also how about the cylinders for the sweep, they look too damn small; you'd think the bore would be three times the amount :S Evil laugh from the blade at 4:17 hehe I had to have a bit of a laugh myself at 1:31 after you said they take great care with how bins are moved, then he loses control and runs it into the side of the truck lol Those containers at 3:25, do they take those inside buildings and stuff for small volumes of loose material? I appreciate the smart thinking at 6:13 where the cycle is continued once they walk off. Who cares about members of the public being sprayed with total shit, as long as the garbo crew stays clean :D I do the same thing but, hit the packer controls and run away from the high risk zone. While watching this video it seems like there were trucks everywhere, even three together during one of the clips... you must get so anxious not knowing which to pursue :P Incredible seeing the Leach struggle at the end, I thought 2R packers never gave up! Question for you, where does a lot of the material from these demo companies end up? Landfill, dry waste MRF, waste to energy? Somebody upset the coppers at 0:25!

MitchellM15 If you like this just wait what else is to come! I wouldn't say that, there's nothing quite like a twin steer Acco hook lift. Now imagine the same chassis with a roll off! I'm getting distracted lol. The Loadmaster's combination of larger sweep blade and smaller cylinders lets the sweep cycle happen more quickly than on say a 2R, there's simply a shorter stroke the cylinders need to travel. Big fan of this sort of geometry on a rear load packer. I always wince at 1:31 too, those trunnions look like a great way to smash an errant finger. Yeah they were using the plastic carts in a sort of commercial version of the more common residential walk-up service. Spotted a smaller hauler doing the same thing but without carts. Simply the driver tossing the bags onto the sidewalk then the helper into the truck, fire brigade style. The public wasn't in too much danger at 6:13, the crews are keenly aware how wet a hopper load is and will be extra careful with the nastiest stops. Trucks everywhere indeed, there's nothing like it anywhere else. If you ever make it to the States, NYC would be a great place to both play tourist and scratch the ol' garbage truck itch. Whether 2R-II or Loadmaster, a full truck is a full truck. You can only compress drywall and 2x4s so much. It isn't unknown for these beast to handle straight loads of concrete, in that case there's exactly zero compaction going on haha. All the demolition waste gets MRFed, as just about everywhere else in the US. With a specialized C&D MRF getting usable end product is easy enough, arguably easier than with MSW. Cardboard, ferrous metals, concrete ground into aggregate with nearly infinite uses, etc. I'll have a shot of a C&D MRF in Brooklyn posted eventually, but if you can't wait check out Scott's latest vid.

georgewuzheer Actually almost never ever see a twin steer ACCO hook, barely any around now that I think about it! haha Never considered the speed influence behind the smaller cylinders, makes complete sense but and clearly works well. Only thing I think about with the tiny sweep cylinders is them snapping like a twig when powering such a large part lol How much of this demo material can the average Leach or Loadmaster squeeze into the average load you reckon? Always wondered if these RLs handle stuff like concrete as it falls under the category of demolition waste..... would love to see a video! :D Looking forward to seeing the C&D MRF video - always enjoy checking out the processing as much as the collecting!

Do u ever see WM in NYC. Waste Management?
@georgewuzheer
@georgewuzheer 8 лет назад
Never. They tried and ended up selling the operation.The only one of the big corporate haulers in NYC is what used to be called IESI, then Progressive Waste, now Waste Connections. Of course with the new commercial waste franchise system things will change. The displacement of a huge number of smaller locally owned companies could provide someone like WM or Republic an opportunity to break into the market once again.
