Garden 2021 Part16 Sweet Potato Harvest Is Amazing

Today was harvest day for the Georgia Jet sweet potatoes and I think I waited too long. They were mostly big ugly things with the heaviest being 4 pounds 10.5 ounces. Now to figure out how to cure them and then make some sweet potato fries. Definitely will plant them again. Its a long boring video with the final tally at the end.

If you cut the vines a couple days before harvesting that will allow the skins to toughen up so you don't damage them during harvest, that allows them to last longer in storage.
@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 3 года назад
I read you only do that if frost hits the vines. 10 day hot humid cure and 10 day cool cure are supposed to toughen up the skin and make them sweet for longer storage. I definitely did some damage to thee skins and will try your way next. Thanks for watching.

My favorite harvesting video is seeing someone dig for sweet potatoes and you fit the bill perfectly. I’ve never seen you this giddy before in any of your videos and it was a joy to watch. Congratulations on a magnificent harvest. I believe the split potatoes will heal over. I’m going to harvest mine once the rain stops. I planted mine in a very large tote bin this year. Getting too old to dig in the ground. I hope my harvest is half as good as yours..

How exciting! What a bounty! Fun to see how thrilled you were. I did not know we could grow sweet potatoes in our short growing season. I always thought they needed consistent heat over a long season. No one here grows them. I suspect those will be the most delicious sweet potatoes you've ever tasted. Growing in great compost is always key to flavor. Wow, but they are some serious effort to dig with that strong, dense, fibrous root system! I do know that *too much water and rain at the end of the season is the usual cause of splitting!* So you had so much rain at the wrong time. Still a huge Win Win though. Those lush vines will also make great compost for next year. I hope Mrs. URHC likes sweet potatoes. So many ways to use them in the kitchen. ENJOY!

That's what I thought up till now. Georgia Jets are 90 days and recommended for our area. Hard to believe a couple are almost 5 pounds. I was worried they would all be rotting in the ground from the rain. Maybe next year I will figure out how to grow pretty small potatoes that can be eaten in one sitting. Glad we really like them and some will get used in the dogs food. Now i have to figure out hoe to cure them so they store well. Thanks for watching.

My experience trying to compost sweet potato vines showed me that the leaves composted but the vines themselves did not breakdown. After laying on the pile all winter the vines were like wire. I finally took them out of the pile. If you have any farm animals, it would be better to feed the vines to the animals. I enjoyed your video and watched it to the end. Since you have so many sweet potatoes it would be a good idea to can come. I hate it when some potatoes go bad before they can be eaten.

Looks like you got a great harvest. Your potatoes split from too much water at the end of the growing cycle. I'm just now harvesting mine this week from last year. I don't water mine if we have frequent rain. They really don't need a lot of water to produce nice tuber's.
@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 2 года назад
We had a very rainy season with several inches of rain for a couple weeks before the harvest that probably didn't help. They all taste the same so in the end the cracks didn't matter. Thanks for watching.

@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 3 года назад
I wouldn't use manure especially any that came from horses because the weed killer used on hay these days passes through them. I only use compost made from plant based materials that I know don't contain chemicals. If you know what's in your manure some can be mixed in and composted with everything else. Thanks for watching.

You can canning sweet potatoes, potatoes, squash. And if you roast them all together, you make this sauce throw over the vegetables it’s yummy. Olive oil, onions, peppers, garlic and tomato sauce, cooking each one of them for a few seconds before to add the next one! Enjoy!

Next year, try curing by cutting the vines of at ninety days but leav the sweet potatoes in the ground for 110 days thats how we cure potatoes here in sweden.
