Join me and my DIL, Taylor with her sister Katie as we tour the front spring garden beds. Both our new gardeners and our sponges in wanting to learn about gardening. They asked the questions and I tried to answer! How fortunate am I to be able to spend time with these darling gals! #newgardener #tulips #beginninggardener #frontyard #springgardening #spring

Hello Linda can't believe how beautiful your garden is already. I live in Wisconsin and today it was snowing right on top of my tulips and daffodils that are slowly coming up.The temperature is only 36 degrees here. I'm sitting in my recliner under 2 blankets and a sweatshirt and watching you guys dress like spring has sprung and I want you to know I'm very jealous. LOL Send some of that Sunshine beautiful flowers and warm-weather my way I'll be waiting. LOL

Nice video, Linda. Enjoyed meeting your daughter-in-law and her sister. I hope you will share their gardens with us when they get started. I deadhead my spring blooms and leave the leaves until they get shabby. In zone 6 New England we usually get a good amount of rainfall and the high temperatures come gradually. My tulips come back every year. I always put netting over the bulbs when I plant them to keep the skunks from digging them up. I save the bags onions and other produce come in and use that. Hardware cloth works as well.

I feed, deadhead and start adding in warmer weather plants as my pansies and violas fade. I supplement with compost and I put out my succulents and Christmas Cactus on my porch in the shade until the first frost. My perennial beds get a good haircut and some compost. Tennis shoes is what we called canvas shoes, but we were calling running and training shoes by their brand names. Good question and answer session!
@robinluchsinger2493

Great reminders of things we may take for granted…like locating plants that like the same conditions together. I plant my bulbs in succession so that when one bulb is dying back, another one is coming up to hide the tattered leaves that need to remain to feed the bulb. And it is “tennis shoes” in my area (Pacific Northwest), although perhaps that is also an age thing.

To keep everything fresh and presentable ...its only a matter of combining with perennials. Their fresh leaves will overgrow the fading spring bulb flowers. Deadheading and feeding is also important .

My older son joined the Marine Corp. When he came back for his masters degree, he was so neat and tidy, he ironed everything washed every utensil or dish after eating, vaccumed or mopped every other day, in his own home. Not so great on a visit for a couple of years but now is. So I credit boot camp. My younger son is still scarey slob like. He is a architectural designer, which is a whole lot messier than I ever imagined. No credit for that tendency except that his brain is focused only on critical points.

More of these please! I am a semi-experienced gardener, but self-taught and it is always very helpful to learn basics along the way. One question about tulips-do you let the greens/leaves stay until they brown before removing the bulbs (and presumably replant the next year) or do you pull as soon as the bloom dies and plant all new bulbs the following year? I learned to let the leaves stay and soak up the nutrients from the sun so they will be strong rebloomers. Thank you for your great videos!

The answer to your question is succession. That is hide the daffodil foliage after the blooms pass with snapdragons or something else. If you cut back the daffodil foliage before it naturally dies back, you might not have blooms next year.

You said something brilliant near the end of this video. You said “Give yourself permission to kill any plant!” You see,my least favorite phrase is “Oh,I just don’t have a green thumb.” That is the mantra of someone who didn’t give themself that permission,the permission to try again. Instead,the plant died,and they conclude that they just don’t have what it takes. Millions of potential garden masters have never become that,due to the ‘no green thumb’ nonsense!😞

I don’t plant tulips in the landscape. I only use them in planters. They are too expensive to add to the landscape for such a short blooming time. I had rather put money in something more permanent that will bloom all summer. Yours are beautiful though.
