Insects are one of the most successful groups of animals on the planet. They are thought to account for up to ninety percent of animal species. But having survived millions of years, many insects are now being driven to extinction by human actions.
Professor Dave Goulson has spent over thirty years studying insects in the UK, specialising in bumblebees. In his recent books, The Garden Jungle and Silent Earth, he has turned his attention to insect declines and what we can do about it. He explains how growing spaces, from window boxes to bigger gardens, offer huge potential to bring wildlife-friendly habitats back and boost nature across the country.

An excellent video Dave! It’s wonderful to know that that, contrary to my thinking, that we’re not getting that close to having an end date, I’d honestly begun to wonder! Even today, Georgs McGiven put a hairy Beetle on Twitter, to most of us there were only black or shiny dark blue Beetles! It’s still amazing how often a new one will come up that the majority of us hadn’t seen before. Our garden is coming on brilliantly as a a meadow. Many thanks for a brilliant video.

This is incredible! I love it, just yesterday me and my 3 year old daughter spent the day scattering wildflower seed as I do ever year in the hope we can encourage more growth. I have finally persuaded my husband to only mow half our lawn to allow the rest to be for the insects. Cannot wait for it to grow and see them arrive, every year we seen the wild flowers and ‘weeds’ multiple in numbers and with it the injects in our garden! I love it and cannot wait to see what visitors we get this summer! Thanks for sharing this important video with the world!
