Well this is weird. I’m next door - have been watching this go up - looks great! There were a few nervous eyes on my tree surgeon when he took down a tree very close to the build a couple of weeks ago!

Hi Robin, great video as always. Interesting discussion about the performance gap for insulation. We don't have much prefab builds in Norway, and PUR insulation (and similar) is almost exclusively used for larger commercial steel builds (stores, workshops, etc), with steel panels on both sides for walls and roofs. A build like this, and residential buildings, will always be insulated with mineral wool (Rockwool, Glava), where the contractor will be careful putting it in not to get any gaps or squeezes between studs and insulation. I've wondered why mineral wool doesn't seem to be much used in the UK?

You guys are light yrs ahead of construction processes in Australia...whilst prefab frames & trusses have been around sometime on the eastern seaboard (Sydney/Melbourne etc). We are lagging behind when it comes to insulation methods. As far as W.A. (Perth) is concerned we're still building with DBL brick with effectively what's alfoil as wall insulation & nothing under roof (colorbond & tiles) Rant over Troy

I have used Gapo tape after seeing a previous building of yours, I’m currently in planning for a single storey ground floor extension which I’m choosing to steel frame and in fill with timber and PIR, hoping that use of Gapo Tape will allow me to use 4 x 2 instead of 6 x2 timbers. I found with my previous two roofs that I used the tape with, I have eliminated warm air leaking into the underfelt void, it’s time consuming to tape up but so much cleaner In installing.

Insulation seems the in thing in the UK now. I remember the attempts in the eighties and the improvements over the nineties. It keeps moving on. In Qld no compulsory insulation until 2000. Even now it is still crap. Don't see the foam panels all still batts. U value requirement not a lot. The excuse it is hot and we don't get cold so don't need anything flash. How wrong. Those eco joists as you call them I used to make them just over twenty years ago on a long press plate and travelling gantry press. Never seen them used as roof rafters but seems like a good idea. Nice and light and you can engineer the span. That panel construction reminds me of the eighties. We used to build kit homes all pre made in the factory. The panels turned up complete with all lintels in. All windows and doors in glazed already. Ply skin on the outside covered with building paper. They sat on a beam and block slab. Fix together. Throw on trusses. Tile and add brick skin. We had to add the insulation. Very similar though.
