I love this. I've never heard that. I work at a community garden with someone who is a stickler for the lines to be straight so I'm thinking about buying one of these spacers. That will be my new response to him!

I am so helter-skelter with planting, and I'm completely amused at how precise you are (we all have our own styles). Last year, I finally put up a cattle panel fence for my peas, because I had an extra one, but chicken wire is often the way I go, too. Just something for the little peas to crawl on. Then, a row on one side of the fence, a row on the other, and I plant a pea every 2 or so inches, thickly sown. They seldom all come up, but if they do, I may thin a little when they look like they're all up. And then I just train them onto that fence, and weed, weed, weed until they start the hand over hand up the trellis. I usually get a good crop, but I'm not looking to do anything but eat peas fresh. I eat them while they are there and when they're done, they get pulled out, and something else goes in their place. Not very meticulous, but I know my personality, pretty casual.💝We all garden by our different natures, and that produces the best results for each of us, interestingly.

I am a backyard gardener. My husband and I are now empty nesters and when we built our home last year opted for smaller sq ft in our home and a larger backyard. I utilize as much space as I can including growing in the ground in between the raised beds. I enjoy your channel very much and the practical advice, canning videos, baking/cooking vidoes and the fact that you are so down to earth are much appreciated!

Interplanet peas in your tall stuff, I squeeze in 1400 peas into our tiny space by growing them not only as an 800 stalk main bed but also they grow among the sweetcorn, up the squash trellis, on the rose arches etc. Don't do the numbers haha gardening turns scary when you do that lol, but that said we're normally a family of 6 & we haven't bought fresh produce since hubby & I got married and started our first garden, we're now 2 but still grow for 6, our oldest 2 now have their own gardens & the youngest 2 are at college and sharing a flat together & we also fill that pantry, all off a combined space of around 50 x 50, we do a lot of container gardening in yard (driveway and parking area) space from carrots right through to tomatoes & climbing beans, adventurous use of available space will help you push the numbers & besides, its fun thinking up new and wacky ways to increase your harvest. Do wish we could grow sweet potatoes though, it's just too short a season for them here so they are eat outs only for us.

Oh Rachel the other thing I have done for years is put my pea fence up and plant a row of peas on either side of the fence so I have 2 rows of peas growing in one row...it works great.

My starter garden bed is chicken wire and decent sized branches pointed to a tip and pounded in. God willing I'll be using my previous chicken run as a new garden bed too. Then the chickens get a new playground too.

Thanks for the great video! Your so right about keeping it manageable. Last year I planted way more than I could manage and ended up with a smaller harvest than the year before. If you are growing shelling peas, yes, it would take a ton of plants to grow enough. Personally, it would drive me mad to have to shell on those peas. I prefer growing snow and sugar snap peas so I can eat the whole pod.

@@1870s School cafeteria English peas ruined them for me. I cannot make myself like them. But, love me some blackeyed peas and all kinds of beans. I will add, I can't do the dried blackeyed peas nor the canned blackeyed peas from the store that are dried and then cooked and canned. But fresh ones are Oh My Goodness so good. And canned fresh ones are awesome.

You can always, as a temp measure, put up tall stakes with fishing line or twine between them along the fence line to cheaply train and grow more peas this year.

Since it's peas and they are fairly light weight try woven wire fencing, we have our whole yard fenced with that and it looks good. We buy ours at Tractor Supply.

I did winter sowing on almost everything, and just yesterday I had to up-pot my chamomile. ONE milk jug yielded 24 potted plants! I just hope all the other stuff does as good 😁 and this year I have stuff planted EVERYWHERE. I did some in recycled kiddie pools and buckets and raised beds. It's becoming an addiction!

A market gardener I watch says to dig a trench and dump peas in! I'm in Lansing, Mi, & I've ALWAYS spaced them out. This year I tried the mass planting. Hope it works OUT. Maybe you could try it too! Love your channel. Thanks for sharing🌱

I have used chicken wire for peas for 4 years. It works perfectly for me. When I am finished with and change to a different crop I just roll it up for the next go around in the fall.

Look at the youtube channel simplify gardening. He does an intensive planting of peas. I am trying it this year. You may want to try it in your fall garden. So far mine are doing well. I didnt start them in a gutter like he did but I may try that for my later fall planting. How Richard's also plants his this way. It doesnt seem to bother peas to be crowded.

I am using a lot more containers this year. We got root Knot nematodes and we have been fighting them for two years. So this year I am using more containers and crossing my fingers..A friend from Florida.

I find i am changing the way i eat to accomidate all the fresh vegetables that i now produce, before i started growing most of what i ate was fast food /convenient stuff, I've found exploring different cuisines helps you find good recipes for more vegetable based dishes

I hear you. I love just about any roasted veggie. Prepping them, or even blanched and frozen veggies (at the ready) makes eating healthy so easy and convenient. Save ourselves from ourselves!

I quite get your staples garden. I grow and preserve all our vegetables and fruit for the year. Keep going with the tomatoes, last year I grew 250 of them. You can never have too many tomatoes! Love your channel. Weather in UK still a bit too cold for planting sadly.

I'm enjoying your planting and gardening videos. Have to order one of those square foot planting templates. I'm changing up my entire garden this year. I'm doing square foot gardening. I have a 20 x25 space, the woven fabric is down, the boxes have been built and are in place, we went and got some of the materials needed to fill the boxes. We live due west of you, so with such a beautiful day we mixed compost, vermiculite, and peat in our cement mixer. Was so much fun! We chose SFT because of less weeding. I have spinal problems and just about did myself in last year between the bending, pulling weeds, and the heat. Our soul is gravel so big 4 x 12 x 18 inch high boxes for the back yard get built starting next week. And hubby had sticker shock filling the short boxes! Worth every penny. Planned this out all winter and can't wait to plant!

Planting peas like that would take me forever. Personally do one row and plant on both sides every 2 inches. My garden is 1/4 of a acre with 90 foot rows. Prayers for you to have a great harvest. 🍀 Also wanted to say that the plastic orange construction fencing does wonders for growing on and it is easy to manage.

I was hoping to have the construction done on my land and be able to start just a couple of raised beds up there. But I'm still in a supply chain/holding pattern. Meanwhile, I am going crazy thinking about what to plant in order to get enough for it to matter. Thank you so much for sharing your story about planning for 20 qts of spaghetti sauce in the beginning and only getting around 8. For some reason, that helps me to feel less pressure. That it's okay to start smaller and get better over the years. I'll be lucky to grow this one container of carrots while I'm waiting to get moved to my new house. And... that's ok. Maybe someday in the future I'll also grow thousands of carrots.

Need to plant more carrots here myself, i have been going a bit crazy with it all lately planting greens out around the base of an avocado tree not digging all kinds of experimenting going on, my Ruth Stout-ish potatoes turnd out awesome i would call it a modified version as i had already hilled them with soil before i gave it a go but i am also trying the Charles Dowding method but with some sugar cane mulch to compensate for the aussie sunshine. Not that there has been much of that here lately ebverywhere is flooding I'm just happy i am in a good spot and have been lucky, other than autumn rain knocking over some field corn everything has survived the wild weather well, today i just saw the first actual ray of sunshine in two weeks or more

I'm not all the way through this video, but before you expand that fence, growing upward on trellis is DEFINITELY wise. It's just more efficient and way less work than expanding the garden space outward. You can always do more with more sq. ft., but as you said, it's just you. I have a toddler and work from home and consider myself pretty lucky to do so, but a 40x40 still seems like plenty of work during an after the growing season lol

I think you should extend the garden and you can always leave some of the beds fallow or plant in cover crops till fall and then plant in them so you don’t have pressure to move stuff out of other beds before you’re ready. You’d also be able to overwinter more things and still have beds to plant fresh stuff in before the overwintered stuff had gone to seed.

Another thing I have decided after trying to compost....I had my hubby build me another raised bed just to compost in. It makes is so much easier to let it sit and not have it drain away....my intention is to "grow" compost in part of my raised bed then the next year use that to top dress the other beds and then pick another bed to repeat that process again. .

I laughed when you said it's mostly just you because, while you're husband helps with infrastructure, gardening really isn't his thing... TOTALLY me and my husband and I giggled when you said that because he's right next to me and you just described us. He (with my help of course) built everything from the ground up, with mostly repurposed materials, and he does enjoy watching his hot peppers grow, but other than that he really doesn't care. It doesn't excite him at all, so it's just me.

Certainly Check out deepsouth homestead. They have grown peas in there greenhouse that are vertical. They had tons of peas . I asked them what kind of peas and they were called little marvel green peas. Check it out! Nancy from Nebraska.

Peas are yummy yummy. There's never enough! My husband is the same way. He will help with infrastructure but not the gardening part. Having a different fencing would help tremendously with yielding a bigger crop for sure! I will be gardening with 2 toddlers and a baby this year over on my channel. I love your concept of a staple garden. I've never heard that term before.

Love your channel, regarding peas we planted tall telephone double row 50 ft. on t posts and 4 inch wire. They grew 8ft tall got 50 gallons ,not shelled. Almost got us through ran out March 1.

My yard and garden area's not huge, plus I have 2 lg dogs that are mischievous, and I want to plant peas for the first time. My former Swedish neighbor used an old swingset that she draped strands of string vertically and grew peas up the string. It was the first thing she planted outside.

A lot of times I have used the trimmings from pruning my fruit trees to use for my peas to grow up. I just stick them in the ground along the row. It works pretty well. It’s even a thing, they call it pea brush. I need to get mine planted!

Last year I tried to trellis my peas on my corn, I planted the peas a full 5 weeks before the corn and the corn still grew too fast and overshadowed it. This year we put up new fencing for the chickens, it's farm fencing, but we have some left on one roll and a whole other roll I'll be using for tomatoes, tomatillos, and pepper trellising, and that's what I'm using for peas also, with some t-posts. I'm hoping it'll be super easy to take up in the fall and store over winter.

Rachel, We were trying to build a tool shed. Lumber for 2x4 stick is over 10 each. My hubby found that the metal galvenized studs 2x4 were about half that. So maybe thats an option. Normally the metal studs are higher price than lumber.

@@1870s Perhaps just use some good sturdy oak or some other kind of limbs to make a temporary trellis. Ive seen people use repurposed chain link fence too. Sometimes they sell on market place or for free.

40 X 40 = 160 foot perimeter - 3 foot for gate = 157 feet = 684 inches / 2 = 342 pea plants

My black eyed peas, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, onions ( in all winter), dill, loofah, birdhouse gourds, and corn are all up in the garden. My tomato and pepper starts are growing really well. Can't wait till things get big enough that it doesn't just look like dirt lol

Yes ma'am wood is getting expensive. It was cheaper for me to get the plastic stakes for my chicken wire than the wood I actually wanted. Saved about $30! And the plastic ones have a metal core and will last so much longer!

Do you have problems with field mice eating your peas? One tip I was told to prevent this is to soak the seed in petrol before planting. It does the seed no harm but the mouse won't eat more than one.

rachel, I was just wondering what you do with all those peas? do you freeze them, only eat them fresh? can't remember seeing you can peas. so glad spring is here. I am looking forward to this new growingseason, in my own garden, but also seeing what my "youtube friends" are doing in their gardens. 🍅🥔🥕🙋‍♀️

You would have to plant a whole lot of peas to can. I hope to plant green beans thanks for sharing your planting day. What scares me about gardening is knowing what your soil is lacking for your plants. Seems there is so much to figure out and it could get expensive and mind blowing.

Rachel pricing is not going down only up and up. I talked to my roofer and he said metal for roofs have gone up 1.10 a foot just this year.

Get an electric fence or wire that you can wrap around garden down low. Just make sure to mow the weeds down. That what we will be doing

I only have 1 long garden bed, a small standing raised bed, and a green stalk planter. I will use 5gal buckets for certain things (corn grows great in those and I can arrange them in squares to ensure pollination). Normally by now I'd have a lot more prepared. I'm in southwest Detroit and I'm about a week behind you for frost date. I'm doing what I can now, but I'm quickly running out of energy. My baby is due April 24th and at 35.5 weeks my energy is just zapped. Hopefully by the time I need to plant my tomatoes and summer crops I'll be back on my feet and functioning a little better...just with a wee one attached to my chest

There are many seasons in life, right now your happens to be growing babies over veggies! Focus on that and when your up to it you'll have time for a fall garden I bet ☺️

That's good to know. We are family of four. And preparing our garden space and it's roughly 50ft long by 30ft. We are good 30 to 45 min away from shopping centers for bulk buying. So trying to do what we can here for us. Our store here is to expensive cuz the convince I think.

Loved the aerial views! My last in ground garden was only 20 x 40 and we grew a ton of food in it... 😁 Now that we have moved to Oregon, I am starting all from scratch...and will be making raised garden beds to grow in since our soil is mostly clay where I want my garden. Plus I feel that the raised beds will be much easier to manage being in my 60's. 😘

I was looking up the variety of pea you are growing. They stay pretty short, maybe you need to grow a taller variety? That may be a case of length of season, but something to explore.

They are heavy producer of 4-4.5 inch long pods with average 8 peas per pod. That's pretty good, not sure I know of a variety that grows longer pods

I have seen homesteaders par boil greens and freeze them for frying and putting in soups and quiche. Just a thought.

I’ve started seeds indoors. Not peas yet. My yard is small less than 1/4 acre. I need to make verticals gardening things. Might freeze next week even though it’s so warm this week. I’ve never harvested more than a handful of this and that. I’m a veg gardener wannabe. I’ve never canned. Got a canner I don’t know if it works. I don’t get it.

You can do it! Check with your county extension office, they have classes on canning you can take.
