53:54 Are you sure it's not just your potatoes are ready to harvest? We did have the warmest May on record with good overnight temperatures. I was disappointed to see some of my potatoes yellowing and I was expecting lots of small potatoes maybe with some rotting under the soil but actually I had a good harvest. The potatoes were just ready early.

Just cook the whole head of the artichoke, and make a dressing with salt vinegar and olive oil, pick the leaves one by one and plunge it in the sauce, it is delicious! For the heart, take off all the little leaves there and clean it, and you can plunge that one too to the sauce. I have an allotment too, but I grew very different stuff. Mainly squash and marrows, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Love your plot!

I always use loo roll tubes for my beans. Plant the whole thing, so no root disturbance. So long as the whole cardboard tube is buried so the rim doesn't dry out. It's always worked brilliant for me. 👍

Cut the artichoke with about an inch of stem. Wash well and steam for about 45 min in a couple of inches of salted water. When soft you csn drizzle with olive oil and then eat. Or pull leaves and dip into melted butter. I don't do any prep unless stuffing them. We scrape out teeth on the leaves and then we tear apart and eat the heart. They are so tummy!!! I have 4 plants in zone 7b and they are 2 years old and grown from seed. I get a bunch or artichokes and love them! Good luck and I hope you get many many more!

I worked as supervisor once. The head of the site asked my boss, "how is it jotham shows up with three workers and gets more done in a day than that other company, with ten workers, gets done in a week?" Some people have the attitude that they must work slow.

Mint cant grow in my climate either, im in south florida. For artichoke - congrats!!!! We just cut the top pointy part a bit (steam/boil it for a while (maybe 30 min ) depending on the size, then just pick off the leaves one by one to “scrape” off the “meat” with your teeth. Great with whatever dip you like, but I like it just plain with a bit of salt and melted butter… 😂 . I never knew how difficult it is to describe eating an artichoke 😅

Don’t think blight. Dig the worst one up and inspect the roots. Look for small white, or yellow, round cysts on the roots. They are about 1mm diameter. If you can see any, your are suffering from potato cyst eelworm. There is no treatment, try not to grow on the same plot for seven years. Great show Jessie.

Hello! I'm not sure about your wacky sunrise & sunset times, but the hours around them are uncannily still. Obviously so close to summer solstice (in 4 days), your times may be when a person belongs in bed asleep! But if you are game, try twilight or dawn to put up the cover to your poly house.

Think the leaf colour is the fluctuating weather Jess. Cold then warm, then cold again has played havoc with my tomatoes and potato plants. I've also got squash out and they were all yellow, but today they are looking greener. Warm weather is coming. Fab vlog ❤

Well done Jess and obviously Hannah on her Silver medal. I usually go GWL every yr on the late day for the big sell off. The thing is Jess GWL is not RHS so is smaller and meant for the people and community and is not a big commercial show like Chelsea and Hampton court etc. really well done for getting up early though. What an experience!

Looks like you and Hannah had a great time despite the weather and rude men! You might want to try putting a plastic bottle, with the lid off over the mint to see if it keeps the buggers off. Some of our potatoes have gone yellow too. Even parts of one container is yellow one side and ok on the other. Was watching Potty Mouth last night and you talking about sprouts. I have popped you an email as i have 2 spare sprout plants if you are interested? Take care!

Artichokes ... pick them young before the hairy bits form inside. Boil for 15-30 minutes depending on size ... cool ... then pull off all the outer "leaves" and trim all the harder bits off round the choke (the middle of the flower) ... then cut in half and dress with olive oil, lemon juice, salt, a little chopped garlic and oregano. Amazing.

Have a dig down or pull a suspect potato haulm. I’ve had blackleg for the first time this year on my charlottes. The prolonged wet was apparently ideal and if your seed was infected ( which is unfortunately too common ), there’s a chance. Best of luck.

Felt like a fan girl 😂 as Hannah was there. Sorry didn’t say hi but she was busy talking and like a real fool went “oh there she is” to my hubby ….. congratulations all on the award. It was our 2nd visit so yes a little disappointed with the lack of veg growing. Frosties garden was immense and I always love the floral marquee. It’s great now it’s joined with the food show, can end up a bit tipsy there. I like the smaller size gardens as more realistic for us home growers

You have to allow at least one spear to grow up into a plant. That's how it gathers energy to grow spears for the following year. The plants become tall and very lacy & beautiful. Leave them be until autumn. Then you can cut them down (do not pull on them) or, where I live, the snow and wind of harsh winters makes them just ... disappear!
