About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

My grandma had a real trick too with sweet potatoes and how to maximize their production..(now remember she lived to 103 yrs old..and even this advice is 65 yrs old)..but, I have done it 'her' way ever since. I'm sure everyone has seen video's on the potato box system. She planted her sweet potato vines in soil, put a large cage of wire around them. They are a vine plant, continually growing more vine...so as they keep vining she adds more dirt covering that vine up leaving the foliage at the top. As they grow..more dirt covering the vine and still more until the cage is filled up. (tuck a bit of straw at the edges of that cage wire (can be chicken wire, farm fencing...etc. OR a wooden box type too....making sections to keep adding on top as the vine grows) I did the wooden box trick myself using a 4 foot x 4 foot raised bed and adding sections on top until it reached about 4 ft. high. When fall comes...take the sections apart and it will have sweet potatoes growing all the way down to the bottom. Each section of leaves that grows on a sweet potato vine also has nodules that produce the fruit..the sweet potato itself and where ever that vine is covered with dirt, they grow. If the vine rides above the soil...it just keeps producing more foliage/ or vine. Something to think about the next time you plant sweet potatoes..and try. It worked for her for years..and she had 16 kids to feed, so who am I to argue with that....LOL! (I believe my raised bed sections were made out of 2" x 6" sections doubled...so they each were a foot every time I added another layer, filled with soil/covering the vines...leaving foliage exposed at the top.

I haven't planted my sweet potato slips yet. Did Grandma plant the slips attached to the sw potato or just the slip? Anyway I will give this a try. My 5 year old grandson will enjoy this experiment. Thanks

I wish I knew your grandmother I was only about 3 1/2 to 4 years old when my last grandmother past . So I didn’t get a chance to learn from her , but amazingly I saw her at the foot of my bed one night mind you she was bedridden . She told me don’t worry I will watch over you . The next day I told my mother that I saw Grammy at the foot of my bed last night even though she was bed ridden . My mother said you couldn’t have seen her she passed away yesterday. I said I know I saw her mom . Don’t know it mom believed me or not but it’s true

Just like with the kale chip craze, I also make nasturtium chips. They are so light and crisp! I only use a dehydrator, as they're such a thin leaf that they may burn too easily in an oven. People LOVE those chips

Nasturtiums are fantastic. And you can eat the leaves and flowers. You can pickle the seeds too. You can stick the seeds in as late summer flowers. And they produce seeds like crazy. Sadly my sweet potato slips all failed in my raised bed - don’t grow great here in the UK so it was a bit of an experiment. Everything else is thriving. Love to see your gardening videos. Even got a T-Shirt!

One thing we tried this year was planting radishes with all our squash and cucumbers. We left the radishes in and let them go to seed (which we collected to use for next year). The radishes attracted all the beetles that would have gotten the squash, and the squash were left alone. It worked!

I did the sweet potato slips this year. I should have started them a little earlier. Now that the sun's shining and it has gotten warm, they're sprouting, but it took them awhile. I'll know better next year. :-) My nasturtiums didn't come up for me last year. I hope I have better luck this year. I make a similar bug spray, but I blend it all together in an old blender and yes, it stinks but it works! Take care.

I didn't make it through all the comments, so sorry if someone already mentioned this: I would be interested to know what kind of germination you got by just sticking dry nasturtium seeds into the ground. They don't germinate all that well without preparation. Nick the outer shell of the seeds with nail clippers or something, then soak them overnight in water before planting This will improve your rate of germination.

My favorite companion crops are from what is known as 3 Sister's Soup. It's a Native American process. Plant the corn. Then plant pole beans so they can climb up the corn stalks. Then plant pumpkins/squash as a cover crops to them both. Each crop fixes the soil nutrients and control pests for the other. And when it's harvest time, you put them all is a wonderful soup/stew to serve with the wild caught fish and wild rice! Also a newer trick, you can graft nightshades together so you can grow your potatoes and tomatoes/chilies/eggplants/etc on the same plant. Not like all on one potato root, but potato/tomato potato/chili and so on. Both methods great for space saving!

Cool vid as usual! Just want to say... those little 120V pony pumps are so handy to have laying around. All you Homestead Homies: add it to your Christmas list if you don't already own one. You'll probably find a ton of uses for it. Couple one with an inverter that you can run off your truck/tractor/UTV and you have a tiny, mobile pump wherever you need it in the yard. Just add barrel/water jug (and watch out for the power of sloshing!). You can get 12V models, too.... but I like the 120V version so I can use it indoors or out

Oh, almost forgot...for those who do not wish to do the potato box system. If you have a large spot IN the garden or even field...sweet potatoes can grow in rows. The more space between rows the better..because the same thing applies to those vines too as they grow. As long as that vine keeps being covered with dirt, leaving the active foliage at the end exposed to continue growing..it too will keep producing sweet potatoes at every leaf section. It's just like cutting off the tips and sticking them back down into the soil. Every time that vine is in soil...it produces sweet potatoes. This is how many sweet potatoes can be produced with fewer sprouts. Way back when...letting potatoes go to seed or sprout meant that many potatoes they couldn't feed their children..so food was at a premium. They had to figure out ways to produce more product with fewer potatoes to sprout and plant. Vine plants are natures abundant plants. They just keep on producing. LOL!

I always plant nasturtiums in my veg gardens. I soak the seeds the night before to help them germinate quicker.

Haven't grown sweet potatoes yet never knew the term potato slip till now. All learn though I was walking my patch today and low an behold pods every where. Like small green tomatoes. Seed pods so I'm going to have seeds from spuds first time ever. I figured out how to process them today they say they'll keep 50 years in the freezer after you prepare them. Enjoy your day and thanks for the videos. :)

I tried nasturtiums and while they did everything you said, they grew so big that they took over the garden and smothered out other plants.

They take very well to pruning, and some varieties get larger than others.

I love nasturtiums! The leaves and flowers are delicious. I love making Nasturtium Vinegar and Nasturtium Aoli. You can even pickle the seeds like capers. How’s the greenhouse working?
