Some managers have a blind-spot like this and persist with a player despite the obvious signs they're not up to it. Bob Paisley won 6 league titles ,as well as winning three League Cups, one UEFA Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, and, most significantly, three European Cups. And how did he do it? Despite his outwardly mild character, he was utterly ruthless. If a player was over the hill, he'd simply get rid of them and replace them immediately.
Southgate decided it was a smart idea to revert to the original tactic that didn't even work in the group stage while putting Bellingham, the world's best central attacking player out on the left. Reminds me of when Sven would put Scholes on the left wing for England back in the day. Embarrassing.
