Garfield High School was originally built with a pull rod fire alarm system. Ten inch manual trip bells were used for the signaling devises. In the 1950's, due to a change in fire code regulations, the pull rod system was automated with an electric Autocall fire alarm system using 8 inch, single stroke bells. Then in the late 1980's, the system was updated again with Simplex fire alarm hardware, utilizing a Simplex 2001-8001 master control panel. The Simplex hardware was integrated with the old pull rod and Autocall fire alarm system. Sadly, this particular school has been demolished and replaced with a new school building.
