Great information. I’m going to grow garlic this year (2024) in my GreenStalk. I’m doing my research now. I wonder if I need to mulch in a GreenStalk. 🤔 Thanks 💚

Vernalization is key to get them to grow. Or try elephant garlic.

Hi Jerra thanks for the very comprehensive video. I have been trying to grow garlic for about 7 years here in the Orlando area and my best results have been with artichoke kinds of garlic like Red Toch and Inchellium Red. I plant them in late October or early November. This year I got my garlic late and I wanted to vernalize it for at least 10 weeks so I will be planting it in late November. I usually harvest it by the end of April. Hopefully El Niño will give us a cold winter this year and we can get a decent garlic harvest.

Thanks for this! That makes me super excited to be growing Inchellium Red and I was not expecting harvest until summer time so good to know.

@@JerrasGarden yes it takes garlic less time to mature in FL because of the heat. I always dig out dirt around one of them when the bottom leaves start to brown and check for the bulb formation. If you leave it for too long it starts to sprout from the cloves.

Hi. I grew mushrooms from a small kit and it was very easy. But only once and I don't remember the variety. I do want to get into growing mushrooms outdoors though.

Wow! Just in time for me, I just received my seed Elephant Garlic... I'm off to watch that video now! Subbed and Liked! Thank you for teaching me about vernalization! I'm wondering if that works for other things that need an amount of cold before planting? I would assume it does, but I also know what that could cause (e.g. assuming things). Thanks again!

Vernalization is a term used more so with garlic than other crops. There are other crops and flowers that sometimes require cold stratification etc.... to grow or germinate. For example, milk weed seeds benefit from cold stratification in the fridge for a few weeks before planting to trick them into thinking winter has passed and spring has arrived which is the proper time for them to germinate. Cold exposure practices vary depending on what your growing.

So, it's just stratification by another name... I was familiar with that term. Huh. Wonder why they didn't just go with the same thing when it comes to the Allium genus, or is even more specific than genus? Oh well, I've been working on my Trees in my Arboretum more than the smaller plants. But, I'm getting into the greens and roots section more now, and thought I would start with big ol' hunking cloves of Elephant Garlic as it seemed to be the thing that was said to be the easiest (might as well start there). I have a few Cassava varieties and a few dioscorea too, but not a plethora of veggies as of yet. Thank you in advance for the seeds and plants on the way. I'm looking forward to the Seminole pumpkins, and happy you had that "Larger" variety for me to try (I have some normal seed already). Thanks again for the info, and many tubs up to come as I peruse the list of videos for Florida growers! @@JerrasGarden

Do you have challenge in finding areas of full sun with all the foliage around your garden?
@JerrasGarden
@JerrasGarden 9 месяцев назад
No because luckily I have a lot of full sun areas and I plan things in such a way that my crops wont shade each other out.
