Thanks for sharing. I haven't tried these types and so far just planted elephant garlic. It's nice to learn about these different types. I look forward to trying some of these and the Japanese if I might find some. I hope you had a great harvest from these onions. Thanks so much for sharing. I always learn a lot and about varieties you plant. Rich blessings to you both.
Danny, I live in zone 8A in South Carolina. The type onion I plant from Dixondale is the Candy variety. They ususall do great. Pray you have success with the types you planted.
I never could get big bulb onions until last year when I planted them where my green beans had been planted the season before ... so I figured they must like nitrogen rich soil...
That's what I use for markers too! Mini blinds cut down. marker does fade on them however, unless you use the non-fading markers. Sharpie's permanent are not really permanent. I've learned that if I tilt them at an angle with the words facing the soil, where the sun can't get on them, they fade less.
I also luv the walking onions. Both my sister & I have some from my Dad's garden. These "parent" onions have produced babies for 10 years now. I plant the babies in the spring and use them for eating.
Perfect timing for me! I bought 2 unusual garlic cloves at the farmers market last weekend. They didn’t know what kind they were. I’m pretty sure they are the purple striped ones you just showed! I took notes so I can plant them this fall. Thank you!
onions.... never knew they were complicated... we just put sets in ground, whatever we dont eat as green onions grows big bulbs even in our short cold summer =) whoot Im Lucky whoot
I haven't planted any garlic for a couple of years but I need to. I always grow green onions but the bulb onions, I haven't purposely grown them. Last year I had some small onions sprout on me because I forgot I had them. So.... I put them in the ground. They grew pretty good but hoping to do better. Thanks for showing how you do it. Take care.
I got my china strip and artichokes in my garden about two weeks ago and they are already sprouting and looking great. I was shocked to learn they take 9 months to grow. I looked up the place you got the onions and will be ordering me some from there. Thanks
I was always a terrible onion grower. Then, the girl that runs our community garden gave us her fertilizer concoction and we had an awesome year, many pounds and some of them were huge. It seems like there were 4-5 ingredients in the recipe and one of them was dry milk powder. I'll find the recipe if anyone is interested. Even though we had a good crop, we still lost quite a few after the curing process. Danny, maybe sometime you could go over your curing process, and storage. Do you ever get a flat side on any of yours, or discover a rotten layer within the onion? The variety was Candy, so I'm guessing it's not meant for long storage. Thanks for sharing all your great tips.
And another thing. I'd swear when I was young, that you could regularly find "sweet" tasting onions. But that seldom happens these days, no matter what the label on the onion says. Is it just me?
bsofar The Vidilia is the ony one i have found that is sweet tasting to me.Plus to get a sweet onion they need lots of water and fertilize when they are young. Thanks
Danny, I just planted our garlic and it's growing like crazy! I'm hoping it produces cloves. I haven't been to fortunate getting cloves in the past but it was all user era! Lol! What a great variety.
Deep South Homestead Yes. I had never done that before so I'll do that with the next batch. Thank you so much for the information. I was never told that before. I'm still a semi-beginner. I love to learn new things and I really appreciate y'all!
I just planted mine on Tuesday :) I see you have all those onions - not sure I'm even going to plant any come spring, mine didn't do that well plus the ones that did grow they already rotted :( :( So I still have to purchase from a store "sigh"
Hey ya'll .. Why do you put the garlic in a plastic bag in the refrigerator what does that do? Thank you hugs and love God bless and hope everybody is staying safe💖
Good stuff there Danny! Getting ready to plant garlic here in KCMO. Which kind do you recommend? Do you use ammonia sulfate on the 6" on each side of the onion when you first plant?
I’m late to the party, I live way north of Seattle and I put my garlic in, in October last year. I harvested this June and they could have used another month but I needed their spot for other plants. So 8 months for me 😃
Hi Danny, What are the days to maturity for the different types of garlic? I only have 90 frost free days. I'm looking for a good variety for cold climate. Thanks -Kathryn
karen catalano The purpose of the fridge is to make it grow larger bulbs. It will grow they just make smaller bulbs. If yours has already been through stratification nothing to worry about. Thanks
You can order garlic for planting. Most feed and seed stores carry garlic for planting. You can also buy organic garlic at the grocery store and plant it.

We have always had green onions. We keep them year to year. But bulb onions have been something that we just can't produce past a golf ball size. But we are trying again. So no we don't have onion starts.
