I genuinely did not intend to harvest my garlic today but once I started ...! After a disappointing start things start to improve and I am surprised by just how well they've done - plus I come across a few very welcome 'extras'!

Fab garlic harvest Jane, no wonder you were excited. It's always great when a crop comes to fruition, especially after the first couple look like duds. You are very patient planting those baubles but it was worth it in the end. Take care 😊

Thats a great crop. Ive just harvested mine and been tidying them up as soon watched you. Mine all have rust, so im stripping them down and clraning them up. Do you know if they will still store?
@JanesGrowingGarden
@JanesGrowingGarden Год назад
If they clean up okay they should still store well. I've discovered quite a few of mine have allium leaf miner as I've been sorting them out - grrr - I'll just make sure I'll use those first!

That looks good Jane. I have had mostly bad harvest this year. I added fish and bone meal to all my compost. The parsnips seeds no show at all. About ten carrots only. Onions a little better. Ten apples on one tree and 15 on the other dwarf trees. Tomatoes still small and green. My potatoes in pots were few and small. Only 2lbs from blackcurrant bush. I will stop there. Good Luck with rest to you Jane. Love your videos. So good watching everybody hard at work in the garden. Also no sunshine for me to sit in only rain every few mins. UGH!Here in Dublin.

So envious Jane. Mine had been a disaster this year, very very small & horrendous rust. Not rot or alium leaf minor tho. Not sure whether to give up or give the bed a huge dose of manure a couple of months before planting 😢 still have the elephant garlic to lift so fingers crossed
@JanesGrowingGarden
@JanesGrowingGarden Год назад
Oh that's a shame - I think the hot weather has stopped them swelling as much. Yes - give the bed a treat and next year you should be in for a bumper harvest! Good luck.

I think the dry weather has definitely affected the size - I'm wondering if they will have a more intense flavour. Thanks Anne.

Nice one Jane - can almost smell them from here! Hardneck will always have fatter stems than softneck as they have a flower spike passing up the centre. I am on the verge of only growing elephants next time. Don't get me wrong, my harvest was enough for me but the sums don't add up. So much more expensive to grow than buy 😥
@JanesGrowingGarden
@JanesGrowingGarden Год назад
There was a huge difference in the size of the garlic bulbs as well - those soft necks were tiny! And I don't think I've ever seen elephant garlic for sale - I'm sure it will be in some farm shops but it's not an easy one to get hold of so you're right to grow it yourself. Thanks Steve.

Well done Jane! So excited for you. I have a question. My egg plants have aphids. I saw 1 lady bug. What can I do the help her get rid of the aphids? ( olive oil, dish soap and water mixture in a spray bottle?)
@JanesGrowingGarden
@JanesGrowingGarden Год назад
You could but that might harm the lady bug as well so make sure there are none on the plant before you spray. Then just give the plants a nice boost with some organic fertiliser to strengthen it back up again. If it's really bad you might need to remove a few leaves as well - good luck!

Well done Jane. I have given up on garlic. Last year lost the crop through rust and rot so haven’t bothered this year. Onion crop was good last year and this year looks good. Two came up with the recent weeding and had a little onion rot but I am trying to keep the rest in the ground. We have our Open Day on the 16th July so would like to leave them in but not sure I can risk it.
@JanesGrowingGarden
@JanesGrowingGarden Год назад
I'm really happy that the allium leaf miner hasn't made an appearance - yet! I think it may have been too hot and dry for them. Onions are just such a great crop to grow - especially if you can store them well. Thanks Honore - good luck with your open day!
