Garmin's new CHIRP sonar technology differs from traditional sonar by utilizing both low and frequency pulses. This results in much greater resolution and a better bottom picture. To discover how it works I spoke with Barry Dionysius from Navcom about Garmin's new CHIRP units and how modern fishers are utilising the new technology to their benefit.

In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ru-vid.comUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

You referred to the origins of Garmin. Actually I met the founders in 1992 in Kansas when I was involved in developing GPS chipsets for the UK company Plessey. We were looking at acquiring (under licence) some software to run our GPS chipset, and I met with Gary Burrell (then President) and Min Kao (VP of Engineering). The GARMIN name came from the first 3 letters of Gary and Min (joint founders) - not his favorite fish!

How do you color the different water depth , like 1 ft to 5 ft one color & 5 ft to 10 ft a different shade or color ? Like a shallow spawning flats all one color & if their deeper water in the flat the color shows it.

Hey there!! I am going to order a Garmin GT20 with chirp. That should give me a great view of the bottom of the water and depth. I dont fish...but I want to see all of that! Is that a good choice? (its for my new Garmin 741xs)

Hi Sonny, mate I'm sorry I have not actually used that model or transducer and I wouldn't be giving you a correct honest opinion. You might be best off contacting the business you bought the unit off or asking in the garmin Sonar Fanatics facebook page. facebook.com/groups/1186380428055901/

nice video ryan...question...just got the garmin echomap 74 dv has built in down vu imaging....is this like chirp or a substitute for chirp....or neither...I ask because this unit didn't come with chirp....thought did.

Hi Joseph, Sorry we missed your question when you posted it. You may need a chirp transducer. Talk to Barry Dionysius from Navcom Electronics Townsville as he is familiar with the technology and specs of the different units. Or a dealer of Garmin equipment closer to you. Cheers

My new boat has the Garmin echomap 54DV. Can I get a new transducer to make it a Chirp, or is this not possible ?

I don't think so Charlie, best bet is to contact a dealer as they are up on all the new models and compatibility. Sorry Im not familiar with the unit you have.

Hi Kay, that big box is actually a forward scan, with the CHIRP technology as well. The larger slim transducer is a CHIRP sounder as well. Hope this helps you. Emma - Ryan Moody Crew
