One thing you need to know. The depth of water is subtracted from the range out setting. Using your screen for example, you are sitting in 28ft of water with a range setting of 70ft. So objects at the edge of your screen are not 70ft away from your boat, they are 42ft away from your boat. If you were in 5ft of water the objects at the edge of your screen would be 65ft with those settings. Hope this helps, tight lines..!
I think this is actually an incorrect explanation. I was thinking the same, but what we have to realise - fishfinder just measures distance to the object and not the surface distance. Ex - if depth is 28ft, then objects appearing 30ft away on screen are actually 30ft away (28ft down + ~2ft left or right).
Good point. I rarely use SideVu to actually cast to something from SideVu. I will usually use SideVu to find objects, then mark them with a waypoint, then go to the waypoint (object) using a split screen of my Navigation and DownVu. This finds the object 100% of the time, and I don't have to worry about whether the feet to it is completely accurate or not.
I must admit: despite the fact that I am a "humminbird" man, this video was one of the most logical , clear, straightforward explanations I have ever seen! You are to be highly commended for your superior teaching style......
@@InstinctBassin the one thing missing in the Garmin arsenal that is very important to me, is that I can turn off Contour mode in side view with Humminbird....I fish in a rowboat on large impoundments where the major off shore cover is flooded stone wall boundaries that existed on the farmland before the reservoir was formed...with contour mode off, it is much easier to follow along these walls....
These graphs are second to none. I bought my first one last year. Saved up 4 months to buy it. Almost bought the striker series. Glad i kept saving and bought the echomap. Good video to get guys started.
Great video, I haven’t had the chance to use my 93sv yet but I wanted to know what to expect. Very informative and straight to the point. You gained a subscriber!
Great I’ve had mine for this is going to be the third season and I basically use it as a depth sounder because it’s for me too complicated but this video helped immensely I didn’t know about the depth shading I will go out in the yard and tend to that right now thank you❤️🔥🇺🇸
Great video, definitely helpful tips…. I’m a Lawrence guy, are was. I just bought my Garment and I haven’t been out on the lake but I’m already in love with this unit. Thank you for posting.
Great video! I just purchased a 73sv and thanks to your video I got the quick rundown I needed. Saved me a lot of trial and error, allowing me to simply go use it and catch fish. Thanks for putting this video out there. Tight lines
@@InstinctBassin I may make a how to install the 73sv on a kayak video, since that’s where I’ll be installing mine. If I do I’ll give this video a shout out for a rundown. 👊
Hello Sir, I'm a new subscriber to your channel, your video series about the Garmin 93SV are very informative. I have learned a lot about how to use it. I just purchased the 93SV and can't wait for a change in temperature so I can get it switched out form my current unit. I'm coming from a SIMRAD GO9 XSE. I'm looking forward to springtime, so I can get out and give the Garmin a go... I mainly fish Lake St Clair for Bass and Musky, I hope this unit and your helpful tips, help me to locate fish better... Tight Lines!!
Specifically, traditional transducers use gain, whereas Garmin ClearVu transducers use brightness. This is from the manual, page 23, Adjusting the Level of Detail.
Thanks for the very informative tutorial!!!👊🏻 Bought 73SV for my new boat and will be getting out and doing these tips on the units!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
This is fantastic. I’m picking up my new Crestliner XF 189 this week and it has the 73 up front and the 93 in the console. I’m saving this video so I can use your tips for setting them up. Also I’m subscribing as a thank you!
Thank you for the info. I’ve had my 73sv for a couple weeks but because of rain and work, I haven’t had a chance to setup/use yet. I fish a lot of Northern California reservoirs that aren’t mapped. Can’t wait to try out the mapping feature!! Happy holidays!
Thanks so much. I have a 95 sv on my kayak and another on the front deck of my bass boat. I love them and use them a lot but learned a couple new thing from this video. Simple yet informative. Just subscribed
Good afternoon!! I was doing some research last night and I think I am going to go with the 106SV and the 93SV for the bow. The way the dash is configured on my Bass Cat Pantera ll I don't think the 126 will fit. I would have to remove the windshield. Going to Bass Pro on Wednesday and pick them up. .
I took the plunge and bought the 126SV today. I need to find someone who can install it correctly. I can use my existing heavy duty RAM mount. I am not good with wiring so I will look for someone to do it. Thanks for the advice. If you are ever on the west coast near Homosassa give me a shout.
I believe autopilot is actually for when you have the unit hooked up to a NEMA network on your boat. Not something you would normally do on a bass boat. That said, it isn’t a function I’ve ever used, so definitely check out the manual for that one. Thanks again for watching.
Great run through and tips. Thanks! Cabelas has some good sales now, spring 2022 and I am looking for a good side scan unit. Charts will be helpful also.
Will look at doing one of those. But all you need to do is get one of these: amzn.to/3J1x6sX Plug it into the Panoptix port on the back of both units, and you’re done.
Hi,,, Very Helpful info, THANKS! FYI,,,,, I need to post a story, about a 'GLITCH' that just might save someone a lower unit! I fish NE Ohio, & Erie the most. I Just started to use the Garmin 93SV on our near-by lakes. No Problems there. We recently had a 3-day Erie trip planned with the family. First day/ first time out, a bright & sunny day,,, we went out of port & around the end of the breakwall, & suddenly the whole screen went black,,, I couldn't see a thing on the screen, & that was the spot where the bottom silt comes up to 2'ow.! That 'GLITCH', BLACK SCREEN, ruined the fams 3-day vacation. We had 3 days to find some eyes, & NOW, NO FISHFINDER!! At home, I called Garmin tec support. I Waited 'IN LINE' for 3 hrs, before I got a return call. The TEC knew about the 'GLITCH', aka lighting problem, & easily guided me through the set-up pages to correct "THE PROBLEM". The next weekend, I talked to 3 other GARMIN 93SV owners at my 75 unit campground, & they ALL experienced the same exact 'problem' & they also had to contact GARMIN to get 'THE FIX'. SO,,,, I'm here to tell you & anyone else who BUYS A GARMIN 93SV, to make sure your unit isn't in 'AUTOMATIC' CONTRAST or LIGHTING CONTROL SETTING! MAKE SURE THAT YOUR UNIT IS SET TO 'MANUAL' CONTRAST LIGHTING CONTROL. Set it around 80%, & go from there. I searched through many RU-vid videos,, & nobody is mentioning this problem. Evidently, the electric eye doesn't diagnose the amount of sunlight that's hitting the screen, & the unit THINKS IT'S DARK OUT! THE SCREEN GOES BLACK.
Oh Ya,,,, one more thing. I removed the Garmin 93SV from it's mounting bracket, in order to take the unit home while I called GARMIN. I figured I needed the SN that's on the back of the unit. With those VERY SMALL positive & negating 12v ELECTRICAL CONTACT PINS, that are on the back of the unit, There's absolutely NO WAY TO FIRE UP THE UNIT when it's out of that bracket!? The boat & bracket were up Erie, & I had the unit at home. Is there an easy, SAFE way to power up this unit, when it's out of the bracket? THANKS,,,,, for any help. ;>)
Not that I know of. I know some people have bought a separate bracket and power cord just so they could mess around with the unit (and make videos) without it needing to be on the boat.
First , I’ll say good video . I can not find where (a place to phyisically go and speak to a person about fish finding eguipment ) also want to know what is the price of what equipment . It would be nice if someone would tell these things . More people whom are not pros would buy if they could speak to someone with some knowledge of garmon or Humminbird .
You’re welcome. You won’t be disappointed. The only other advice I’d give is that you may be able to find the 106sv on sale still. If so, then that would be the way to go.
Listen.....at 3am ....on the east coast- there is NOTHING better than one of these to ease your mind in the pitch black... ESPECIALLY if the weathers bad
How does garmin 73sv indcate if i am to close to rocks or hidden dangers under water. Your videos have been very helpful. I am a new boat owner. Eugene Howell
Good info but I have a question . In your shading you have 20 30 feet set at purple but when you go to your map I see 24 25 foot not shaded but then the hump at 26 is purple. Why is that? Thanks
Great instructional vid with a simple explanation of the processes. Thanks much for making it available as a Garmin of some variety is in my near future.. d:^)
Man great Video! Just got my boat that came with a 73sv and I can't wait to get out to the unit and set it up with some of these changes. What mode were you in to be able to do that in your garage again please?
I had the unit in simulator mode. It can be accessed through the system menu. Just be sure to turn simulator off before you go to the water. Thanks for watching.
rob can I run my fish finder in my garage to set up or make changes with out hurting my transducer while in simulated mood.thank. love all of your video I have lean a lot
Yep, I do it all the time. You can also just disable the transducer and still make all of your other changes. Just hit the power button once, then “disable all sonar.” That way you’ll know it’s not hurting anything.
Hello…I really enjoyed this video plus your follow up on 5 more things to do! I have a 73sv and looking at a lot of how to videos to help my learning curve. I do have 2 quick questions. You mentioned that you were not out on your boat when doing the videos so you used simulation mode using the predefined maps, not actual live recorded data. That interests me a lot since we don’t have enough room to keep our boat home and I was wondering what setup you use. My mounting connections are all on my boat where we store it, but I bring the trolling motor battery home to recharge it, so I was wondering (1) how do you enter simulation mode and (2) do you have another set of cables that run from your 73SV device to your battery to power it? I have the full East coast maps that include 17,000 lakes and rivers and I’d like to review these at home for ideas on where to boat/fish. Thanks for any suggestions…
Hi my latest video talks about how to enter simulator mode and what to do if you can’t find it, so check that out. I also did an “on the water” video where I go over my personal setup. Check those videos out and hopefully they should answer your questions. Thanks for watching.
Give short line trolling a try. I find crappie stacked and hard to catch. I troll over them. The bigger ones hit. Make short troll passes, one pass of maybe 40 yards. Back and fourth even big circles. Using spinners, .5 -1.2 mph. Trying different tails. Works for me..
We just bought a Garmin 73CV, but need to power it up in my house to learn how to use it. Can you please help me figure out how to convert the power cable to plug into the house?
Seems like if you wanted to fish 25 ft deep or any other set depth…instead of setting the color range from 20-30 you could set it at 20-25 and just fish the outer edge of the color blob on the map
It is a real pity that there is ZERO information about the ECHOMAP UHD 60 has nothing on you tube or anywhere on the net. With the Echomap I mentioned - the system does not respond to touching the screen. Maybe Garmin should something about it????
It’s true, there isn’t much out there on that model. Unfortunately I’m not familiar with it either. There does seem to be a manual for it on Garmin’s website, and I notice it has buttons. Are you sure it’s a touch screen unit?
Hey great video. I'm in the market and you've help my decision , the 73sv uhd for console 93sv upfront. Hoping you could give a suggestion about which transducer to get
I have a 73 sv & a 93 sv w/o panoptic. I was wonder what happens when those are hooked up, which Transducer is going to operate or are they kept separated by each unit. Hope I worded this right.
Assuming you have one at the front of the boat and one at the console, they would each use their own transducer. If you have 2 right next to each other, say both at the console, then you could just use 1 transducer.
@@InstinctBassin Your right, I have one at the bow & One at the console. I'll be connecting them with a Rj45 20 ft. cord. Thanks so much have fun on the water.
Just ordered a 73SV for my boat, great video man. Appreciate the tips, excited to get it setup. Did you use the swivel mount that came with it by chance? If so how is it?
I did use the swivel mount, and it works well. It just seems a little flimsy, but I haven’t had any issues with it at all. If I had to do it again, I would probably use a Panther mount, or some other that fits over the top of the trolling motor.
@@InstinctBassin I appreciate that. I was debating on just using it or ordering a RAM ball mount for it. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Just going on the console of my little pro 17 bass tracker. Probably order another or the 93SV later to go up front... Soon as my wife forgets that I just bought one lol.
So this is my first boat and my first fish finder/chart plotter. I have the UHd 106sv. My problem is, I dunno wth I’m looking at. I have the transducer mounted on the left rear toon on my pontoon. On the screen is it showing behind me as if I need to fish like I’m trolling? Should I move it to mount on my trolling motor?
On a pontoon, I’d leave it where you have it. But yes, all fishfinders, besides Forward Facing Sonar, show what is directly behind and under the boat. Check out Fish The Moments channel for some great tutorials on how to read sonar…aside from what I have here of course.
If it’s going on the trolling motor, the GT54 will fit better since it’s shorter. The GT56 may be too long for some trolling motors, depending on where the skeg is. But either will technically work.
I’m going off memory here as I’m away from my boat. But from the chart, go to menu, then overlays and tap overlays so there is a small green box to the left. This shows that they are on. Then you can go back to the chart and hold one down to change it.
Great video and really helpful information. I just got a 2022 Avalon pontoon with the Garmin system, not sure the model in the video but similar to your video based on layout of controls and screens. I use the navigation chart almost exclusively as we just cruise and pull the inner tube. I would like to have depth and water temp on the navigation screen but for the life of me haven't been able to find out if that is possible to add. I typically use the combo screens but that makes my navigation screen so small its hard to read. Please let me know if there is anyway to add the depth and temp to navigation screen. Thanks,
Thanks for watching. Depending on the unit you have, start from the navigation chart. Then menu, then overlay data (or similar). Be sure it’s turned on. The 7x and 9x models will have a small green mark on the left side of the “button” when they are on. Then go back to the map and they should be there. Hope it helps!
Hi thanks for watching. In the upper right corner, it will tell you how much voltage the unit is receiving. While this isn’t necessarily the same as how much is left, it should give a good indication.
Hey I need help my gps does not show the litttle numbers for the depths on the chart it’s just bank yellow and I can’t see how deep it is in the area because like I said It doesn’t have the little numbers could you tell me how to set up to get the numbers to show maybe am just tripping
I believe so, but I’m not sure what changes save while I’m simulator mode. You can also just take it out of simulator mode to make any changes and then put it back in once your changes are saved.
Yes settings can still be made with sonar off. I always turn mine off when using it out of the water, but I honestly don’t know if it’s necessary. It only takes a couple button presses so I figure why take a chance.
According to Garmin’s website, the GT-56 transducer has a max depth of 800 ft for traditional 2d sonar, 400 ft for ClearVu, and 500 ft for Side Vu. The GT54 transducer max is 800ft, 200ft, and 125ft respectively.
Hi this is all you need to hook them together: amzn.to/3C0uEmw Use that link and I’ll get a small commission. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any other questions.
I have the 7, but it’s honestly a bit small unless you get a high ram mount for it. I think a 9 is a good compromise, but of course a bigger screen is usually better.
Hey Rob, I am going to buy a 93SV tomorrow for the bow. I downloaded the update for my 126SV last week onto an SD card. Can I put that card into the 93SV to do an update or do I need a new card ? Thanks
Really the best way is to just use the Active Captain app on your phone. That’s the only way I’ve ever updated mine. But to answer the question, I think you will need to download the update for the 93SV. I don’t think they are the same update. But I’ve never used the card to update, just the app.
