Thanks for this. I found the review extremely helpful. I’ve been using an 830 and had been considering an upgrade to the larger model. I’m a road rider and given what you say about the 1040, I’m going to stay put. Thanks again.

Thanks for the feedback. I think you are making the right choice. There is no real need to upgrade the Edge 830 unless you really needed the larger screen of the 1040 or you are doing multi day rides. I would even say that the newly released Edge 840 would not be a worthy upgrade from the 830 which is still an awesome head unit. Ride on and stay safe out there!

Great review. I use an out front mount, mounted backwards to computer is above the stem. Works well for me. I also appreciate the audio controls as I listen to podcasts. Only 1 bud in, or bone conductive headphones due to safety reasons as well. thanks

Useful review. Thanks. I too bought the 1030 just before the 1030 plus released. I have learnt my lesson and won't buy late in the lifecycle again. I have just ordered the 1040 standard. For me, going from 20 hours of battery life to 35 is a major upgrade just there. Never really had any concerns with the 1030 and battery, but the laggyness in the menus is pretty bad. I only plan to cycle in AU/NZ so I have no need to load up US or EU maps. Base storage will be fine. Looking forward to Stamina, Climb Pro and USB-C charging. Yep, it would be super cool to have the Solar and watch the tech work, but I saved $250 which I can put somewhere else in my cycling.

I didn’t need the solar of the 1040 either, but it was the launch edition and I was so impatient to get rid of the 1030 I just went for it. I am sure you are going to find the battery life of the standard 1040 to be fine. There is still the option to use the Garmin battery pack with the 1040 if you need it, the pins for that battery are on the 1040 mount. I have had that battery pack since I got the 1030 and have never used it. Ever. So I think you will be fine! Thanks for the feedback #rideon

If you use Di2, you can change the data field screens on your Garmin remotely, using the shifter hood buttons or the shifter buttons themselves (you can use synchro shifting mode and use just the right shifter to control both the front and rear derailleurs). No need for swiping the Garmin while riding.
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC Год назад
I learned that fact shortly after this video was posted. That’s really useful. I am a SRAM eTap user and eTap doesn’t have that functionality so I lose out to the Shimano guys! Thanks for your comment
@shahedameer
@shahedameer Год назад
Does eTap have anything like synchro shifting? If the left shifter buttons are freed up, can’t they be reprogrammed on the Garmin to cycle through the data screens? That’s why I did on my old Di2 bike that didn’t have the hood buttons. Even now I use the shifter buttons instead of the hood buttons to change screens on the Garmin because they’re easier to press
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC Год назад
eTap has two buttons, one on each bar, hit the left one to go up a gear, the one on the right handlebar to shift to a smaller cog. Press them both together and they toggle the front chainring up or down. That's it, very effective but very simple and no option that I can see to add any Garmin functionality. I can see the status of the eTap batteries on my Edge 1040 Solar however, eTap has a battery in each mech and also a button battery at the handlebars, I can see the status on a dedicated Edge 1040 screen (if I want to swipe through the screens)

Got it for the larger screen fonts and weaker eyes... Was actually very happy with my 830. Re-mapping is still not great but easy "go-to-home" set-up is valued. Gyro is used for accident detection - my wife applauds. To me its also an advantage that you get access to all Garmin regional maps as I travel the world. YMMV.🙂
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC Год назад
Agree on the screen size - I can see everything I need on one screen without tiny font sizes. If it wasn't for that I would probably have stayed with a 530/830 format size as it feels less like an old iPhone on my aerobars. Sounds like you are happy with it... thats always good to read ... stay safe out there #thumbsup

Great coverage of the New Garmin 1040. In regards to your comment about the gyroscope, if I had to guess it would be used for tracking the slope or grade of the road and any additional motion like you stated in a wreck or as in the security feature notifying you if your bike has moved while you were away from it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your comments - yes I believe that is the correct use. There does not appear to be any clear info from Garmin so we are all driven to speculation, but generally in these comments it seems to be focused on incidents and angle of grades, particularly for MTB rides.

Some really good points. I have a 2nd hand 1030... it works OK, certainly well enough but I get the issues. I like the faster GPS and as a long distance endurance rider the solar battery life is REALLY attractive... especially on a 60 to 90 hour ride. But oh that is a steep step up.

@@ThisIsJulianC I upgraded to the 1040 solar from my first gen 1030 about a week after my first comment. Well worth the money. First battery life test I am expecting between 60 and 70 hours from the unit. Rides have been in early winter in the southern hemisphere so solar charging not at it's best, and plenty of dark riding. I feel their battery life claims stand the test and it is over 3 times what I expected from my 1030 in it's lowest power mode. The nav is reliable and all in all it's a great package. The GPS is very good even on the low setting.

Hi Julian. I got the 840 for many reasons - one of which is I love mountain biking. And I didn’t want a big honk’n device sticking out to get snagged on anything. But I did have a twinge of regret due to the large screen as I love using my trail forks to help me navigate trails. Oh well. I’ve nought too many accessories for the 840 to change to the 1040. I think the 1040 would show maps such as Trailforks so much better.😢 great video!

For those asking about the Garmin Edge 840 and Edge 540 rumored new bike computers from Garmin - they just landed today! First impression is that they are very close in specs to the Edge 1040 including USB-C charging, and for the Solar versions, solar charging too. The new head units are adopting the same interface layout as we have already with the Edge 1040. There is also an update to the ClimbPro called Free-ride ClimbPro that does not require you to be on a predefined route or course in order to get climb information. This is stated to be coming to the 1040 in a firmware update. If you are looking at the Garmin Edge 840 and Edge 540 and are looking for how they may perform - this video on the Edge 1040 Solar after (almost) one year will help!

Great Video. Garmin has a strategy of just creating new metrics without any accountability to the accuracy of what they tell you as you say, their competitors offer nothing new. I use a Fenix 7 for running and 530 for cycling, there is no way you can use a watch for cycling, the issue is that the ecosystem of metrics do not work together and I have to upgrade to make them work. I have just ordered a 1040 not just for this reason, being short sighted I cannot read the 530 without bifocals, but it has a ton of features I will never use.

I'd recommend the Garmin Edge 540 bike computer. This is an excellent all round bike computer at a much lower price point than the 1040 with many (not all) of the 1040 features. It has a smaller screen that is not touch enabled or solar charging but the bike profiles, data that it tracks, integration with Garmin Connect are all very similar. Your Quarq power meter will be ANT+ or Bluetooth connections depending on the age of it, the Edge 540 will work with both systems. Interesting about the solar, I always pegged it as a bit gimmicky because us less your racing across the country or bike camping, I wouldn't think there is a viable use case because there is always an electrical outlet around. I always charged my bike stuff after each ride, so running out of juice is never a problem and my rides don't extend more than 6 hours.. usually 3-4 max. I upgraded from the 1000 to the 1030 plus and aside from being more stable and quicker to load, said meh. The screens I use are exactly the same, maybe a little bit brighter. Don't have a need for a gps because I know where I'm going. I think if you start with a decent bike computer, there is very little reason to upgrade. HR, watts, speed, and maybe cadence is all you will need.
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC Год назад
The solar panel reduces battery consumption but with a battery capacity of 35 hours, even though solar is a cool feature it is not much use for cyclists like you and I, I am rarely riding for longer than 6-7 hours either. The more Garmin develop this technology however the more efficient and useful I think it will become. Thanks for the feedback - ride on!

@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC Год назад
There is no landscape screen orientation on the Edge 1040. It is possible that the gyroscope is used for angle of ascent. ClimbPro I believe uses a database and GPS to know where you are and what the terrain is that you are on, it is not relying on the angle of your Edge unit to calculate this. I refuse to believe they included a gyroscope just for the incident detection so there has to be other uses for it I agree.

@madyogi6164 Год назад
@@ThisIsJulianC The GPS was my thinking too, but the issue is - what about offroad? From the other hand - I would be more focused to not hit a tree. Not mention accuracy of readouts. And for detecting a hit / accident, I guess accelerometer sensor would be more appropriate. Gyros are for angles (just like in planes).

I went from the 830 to the 1040 and I think it's totally worth the upgrade. First, main reasons for ditching the 830: very slow UI and touchscreen responsiveness and slow route (re)calculation. I thought the 840 would fix all that plus with the added buttons it would eliminate any issues with touchscreen interaction during rides. But in reality I always wanted to have an Edge 10X0 to have a bigger screen for navigation. After trying out an 840 and seeing how much more responsive the touchscreen now is (even with gloves), I immediately felt I wouldn't need the extra buttons, so I ahead and got the 1040 instead. Still just as responsive and the added screen real estate for navigation or larger glanceable data is way more important to me than how it looks on the bars.

Great video, I’m currently on the 1030, not really had many issues with it, but some of the new data that’s only on the 1040 I’m really interested in, I’m a triathlete, but my dilemma is solar or not, if I’m doing a race it’ll always be fully charged the night before, so it running out shouldn’t be an issue, it’s the solar panels that look a little distracting?
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC 5 месяцев назад
The solar panel is a thin strip around the edges, I haven't found it a distraction and doesn't detract from the view of the screen. However, I increasingly see the solar charging on the current 1040 / 840 Solar versions as not critical. It's great to see the innovation and it will get to a point where it becomes a useful feature as the technology advances, but right now the battery life is so good I agree with you that we don't need to be concerned about if it will hold enough charge for a full day of cycling/racing. When Garmin can produce an Edge device that doesn't need to be charged up at all other than through solar (they are heading in that direction with their Instinct 2 watch) then maybe it becomes more appealing. Until then it's a cool feature but you don't need it.

Is there some 3rd party outfit that can do repairs? I have to say the 1040 appears great for bike touring, the screen zoom feature is really nice. The 1040 has led me into a dead end in a busy urban environment, it can be hard to tell exactly where to turn. The fitness stuff I have no use for whatsoever. I am not aware of any 3rd party repair outfits for these units, sorry to hear of your 1030 issues. Best suggestion would be to eBay it as spares or repair, to recover some $$ from the damaged unit.

I have the 1030 plus and without gyroscope the screen change orientation almost every time you stop (traffic light, stop, break). It seems that the edge anticipated your position and come back to where you actually are. Your screen is then showing the wrong direction and it is confusing, I often had to double check which direction I need to take. I guess the gyroscope can really help in those cases... I often wished my 1030 would have one.

@ThisIsJulianC

Difficult to answer without more information about what sort of cycling you are planning to do. If you are going to use it on your bike occasionally you might be better with your cellphone for navigation. I would not buy this unit purely for the navigation function.

Unfortunately, the mobile phone is not suitable during the day, with the intensity of the heat, its temperature rises, and the screen automatically becomes dark.

I'm waiting for the 540. I have the 830 but I hate the touchscreen. I have Di2 so there is no need for a touchscreen. Navigation is something I never need to do on the fly and my courses are loaded from Ride With GPS. So, C'mon Garmin, launch the 540 already.
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC Год назад
I liked the 520 a lot but the button pushes necessary to change anything was annoying. Now that the Garmin Connect App allows you to edit some data entry on the phone app instead of the head unit will make that process easier… but for that reason I favored the touch screen. I saw a lot of rumors about a 840 and 540 a week or so ago when filming this video… so far no concrete news from Garmin but the 530 and 830 are now four years old so an update is (over)due.

@@suburbia2050 Funny that you replied to my comment today. I actually purchased the 840 this afternoon. My last few rides using the 830 has been a nightmare. The thing has a mind of it's own and has been doing strange things. My data fields are changing to other metrics, the screen blinks on and off randomly, and today my route navigation kept saying I was off course and telling me to turn around. The glass is showing voids around the edges, I think that's from me beating on it when I get so pissed at it. I got fed up and pulled the trigger on the 840, not the solar though. Yeah, one question I can't find the answer to is the Lock Screen function. Does this also lock out the buttons? I won't use the touchscreen if I can stick with the buttons.

Glad to hear about the battery performance of the 1040 Solar. I have a 1030+ which is the most hideous piece of technology I have ever used from a usability point of view. Virtual partners which I don't need and I cannot disable. An (undocumented) limit of 100 trails I can keep stored. Also, why can I not organize my trails in a folder structure? A nearly impossible to see microscopic cursor visualizing (hiding) my position on the map. At one point there was an option to make the cursor larger. Why did this get removed? Perhaps my use case is special: I am downloading tracks from web sites or design my own ones. For this use case Garmin is simply dreadful. Garmin design appears to be driven by engineers interested in piling up as many features as possible without understanding the notion of usability of a consumer type product. I wish they would spend even just one day in some usability lab. Is the 1040 Solar any better in this regard?
@ThisIsJulianC
@ThisIsJulianC Год назад
I find the navigation on the 1040 Solar to be adequate for what I am doing - which is following new routes on roads that I create in Strava, those courses synch very smoothly to the Garmin. I had a less enjoyable experience with the 1030, if the 1030 plus was anything like the 1030 then yes I think you would see a difference but I am not sure that the points you are specifying are any different. For example I do not see a virtual partner, on the 1030 I just removed the virtual partner screen in the profile settings. I did read that if you are using certain navigation file formats then virtual partner is visible. RideWithGPS says that if you save a course as a .TCX file it will show the virtual partner. Hope this helps, let me know if it works

Good review from a very biased Garmin fan. I completely disagree. I think Garmin is stuck in the past while newcomers keep innovating. Garmin is like Nokia 3310 while let's say Karoo is like an iphone. Can't wait for Karoo 3 with small bezels, better battery life and even closer smartphone like feel experience.

@@ridelive6249 Thanks for the feedback. I am a Garmin fan for sure, their products have helped me achieve my triathlon dreams over the years and never let me down. Additionally I use Garmin products for navigation when hiking, car and truck dash cams and the nav unit on my boat. That doesn't take away from the Karoo 2 though. I like the look of the Hammerhead units, I really like the cellular option that the Karoo 2 has. As a SRAM user for my group sets I would not have the issues that Shimano Di2 users have had to face in the past year with Hammerhead compatibility. It would take a lot for me to make a wholesale switch at this stage and, given I am happy with what Garmin is bringing right now, likely to stay with them.

@@ridelive6249 yes, Garmin is like a pre-iPhone pseudo "smartphone" - It is not burdened by user-centric design. It is a collection of badly aligned features created by engineers without vision and design. I don't know about these other products. Maybe they are better but so far I don't see any compelling design-centric company (such as Apple in the case of the smartphone) stepping in.

@@repenning1 Well..I've been using my smartphone which I upgraded, as a bike computer for a decade. I upgrade the phone every 2-3 years, so that renders me a new bike computer every 2-3 years. LOL. It's enough for my 2h-4h rides. I guess I'm spoiled by smartphone functionality and feel. Tried Garmin and oh boy I was blown away how ancient it looked and performed. Sold it immediately. Then got Karoo 2 just for a sake of it. Karoo is pretty much an Android device with stripped down functions. So, that's why I have high hopes for Karoo 3 so I can finally ditch my phone. I think it will have thin bezels, better battery and aka smartphone feel. Garmin is like Apple. It sucks in people with it's ecosystem which keeps the sales rolling.

That was not a scientific test and I have been unable to recreate it since then either. Given the battery capacity I do not see a need for the solar but I do think it's a tech that Garmin can and will refine as they incorporate it into more devices. My Fenix 7x does charge in the sun, there is a specific screen that tracks the sun energy that is being 'absorbed' but I have not tracked how much power / days charge it adds.

This was not a controlled scientific test and is the extreme of what I have observed so far. Garmin claims that on a sunny day the solar charging can add up to an additional 42 minutes of battery life per hour. There are lots of reviews about the solar charging capability, it's probably the most talked about feature.

After my second Garmin Edge 520 died unexpectedly I decided to try something different - the Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt instead of the Garmin 530. Boy! I'm glad I did. ru-vid.comUgkxXZCtB-wGdHVTBSz8RswePK5vllHNi06N The display on the Wahoo Bolt is much easier to read. I like the configuration of the display more (up to 7 items visible on page 1 without scrolling and the first item chosen is larger characters than the next 3 rows that have pairs of items (still very readable). I also like the configurable item selections. The Bolt synced with my Garmin ANT+ Speed sensors on both bikes easily so no additional investment was required there. While the rated battery life is a couple hours less than the Garmin 520/530, I easily get a weeks worth of 1+ hour rides before recharging (and it's never really low on charge). At the end of a ride syncing to the Wahoo app, Strava, and Apple Health app is painless.

You mean where to position it on the bars? It will work with a 29er just like any other bike. It’s a large head unit for mountain biking but I know mountain bikers do use it. I have my Garmin mounted on the stem, so that there is some protection for the large screen.
