Hey thanks for the review. I have been using the Fenix 7 Pro for almost a year now. I didn’t want an AMOLED screen on my wrist, as it distracts me, especially in low-light environments. As a 7-year Apple Watch user, I switched to Garmin, and my only regret is not making the switch sooner. Now, the Apple Watch feels like a toy to me. It can’t even display health information on the watch, and you have to worry about the battery every day. To be realistic, the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Ultra are nothing more than marketing successes(I’m saying this as a Apple Fanboy). After switching to Garmin, I started training more regularly, I can track my health better, and I can almost predict when I might get sick thanks to the graphs provided by Garmin. Additionally, using buttons instead of a touchscreen is definitely more practical. I think it could be one of the most important technologies in my life. Ahh also your performance scores are 🔥
They arent the same product. The apple watch is a much much more capable smart device. Its easy to have great battery when you arent doing the stuff the apple watch does.
I went with the Fenix 7 Pro a month ago after going back and forth for too long. I'd love the Epix display but I'm used to MIP so went with Fenix as I do love the Fenix battery life.
I returned the Fenix 7 Pro because the MIP screen just constantly left me feeling underwhelmed. Having all those cool functions but with a MIP screen is like dating someone with a great personality but a face you don't want to kiss. Amoled is where it's at.
Thanks for the review/one year evaluation, especially the comparisions, since I bought an Epix 2 (Sapphire) some months ago, at a sale, and keeping that, at least until an Epix 3 is released 😉
Great video, very helpful, thanks. I'm coming from a Garmin Fenix 5 in 47mm. With the Fenix 8 right at the door, the prices for the Epix Pro Gen 2 are getting pretty appealing. The bigger display and battery life of the 51mm version are real plusses, too. What's the size of your wrist if you don't mind me asking? Thanks again and greetings from Germany.
How much do you run on average in a week to get endurance score to an "elite" level? Do you know how that would vary for me who biclyes once a week, runs twice a week, weight trains twice a week? Would I be ever be able to reach "Superior" levels? from your stats, it seems like you primarily use the watch to run
My Epix 2 is disappointing for optical HR reading, much more unreliable than my previous 255music model, which I felt was very accurate. So I always have to wear the chest strap which is annoying to alwaya wear for accuraye reads. Also, the software is buggy, it often freezes upon saving a workout.
I went for the AWU2 moving away from Garmin. The only thing I miss is the start/stop button features but the AWU2 has the double press which works well. For maps I use the Workoutdoors app which I find better than the maps on the Garmin. Also having just completed my 2nd marathon the AWU2 had a more than adequate battery life..normally 3 days always on during marathon training 👍🏃🏻♂️
3 Days allways on are you sure? I dont use this but i hate to charge the watch everyday. I just do one workout/run or bikeride a day and my applewatch Se just lasts for 1.5 hours training its horrible
How is the actual navigation experience on Garmin's these days? I hear lots of talk of best in class maps and making routes on the fly. But my last experience of actually racing a route I didn't know, relying on turn-by-turn (Instinct 2) was terrible. The notifications didn't appear until I was almost at the junction, occasionally just after. I've found polar and, especially Suunto, to be much more reliable.
Because you had instinct. It only has breadcrumb (lines) for navigation. Forerunner 955, 965, fenix and Epix models all have full blown topographic maps with details of trails, roads etc.
I've had a polar vantage, pacer pro and 1st gen garmin instinct-the FR 965 blows those out of the water in terms of navigation AND gps accuracy. Using the maps on the 965 is incredible. Just like a mini phone screen basically. Polar and Suunto even now don't have any map labels like garmin does.
Great review - worth an upgrade over a Fenix 6 Pro in terms of training features for a regular runner? Endurance score is interesting. There is more competitive pricing out there now for the Pro Gen2...
For me the big upgrade I noticed going from Fenix 6 Pro to newer Garmins is the GPS accuracy, I always found the Fenix 6 a bit flaky for me! The new training metrics are nice but I'd not upgrade for them alone myself. That said, how much you value them will vary a lot between runners.
For me yes it was for the accuracy of GPS Heart rate and other metrics. The torch is a surprisingly good feature too. The Amoled screen makes it look a classier look too. I couldn't go back to the old screens now.
If you dont care about amoled, go with de 255. Cheaper and you get pretty much everything you would get with 265 (just miss out on training readiness). Personally, I was almost picking up a 265, but the 955 was at the same price, with 2x the amount of feature… it was an easy choice.
Good content in the review. That said, watching this felt like it was accelerated to 3x speed - please consider slowing down on the voiceover, it can be really hard to follow and absorb the points you’re making.
That colour is the best , I’ve been through a few , returned the mip 7x pro , great battery life but for me it’s overpriced with a screen so poor in low light , I have my epix gen 2 on always on screen low , gesture off but on auto brightness on activity’s , it’s perfect , 4 to 5 days with about 4 hour of gps usage ,battery’s a dream coming from an Apple Watch
I went for the Epix Pro 2 moving away from the Apple Watch Ultra 2, feels so much better to not pay for like 3 or 4 subscriptions for the watch to actually do its job, and also love the battery life from the Epix, had the AWU2 dying on me two times. Only thing I miss from the AWU2 is the notifications.
@@Bjustis2222 No, they're selling the white ones for £400-£500 cheaper because no one wants them in white (they must be overstocked). I just got one myself. Absolute madness that colour can make such a difference. I mean an Epix Pro Sapphire, arguably their flagship product for less than Forerunner because it's white. The black ones are still over £900.00
Just upgraded from Fenix 7S sapphire solar to the Epix Pro (gen 2) 42mm. No regrets. Display is so much better. Not a huge difference with the battery life from what I’ve noticed. Sensor is supposedly better though
I’m currently to deciding between the fenix7 S pro solar sapphire. Or the 42 epix gen 2 pro . Which do you recommend ? Are they both the same size ? And how is the battery? Take long to charge etc thanks
@@jamesconors88the biggest question is what display do you want. I have the 47 epic pro and I just throw it in the charger when I shower then back on and that keeps it no lower then 60%. That’s with always on display and running with music 3ish miles. If I go on a longer hike then I I’ll put it on the charger longer.
Thank you for the great video; it really helped make up my mind on which Watch to buy; One question please: I see that you are wearing the heart strap to the left harm? is it correct? Does it work with the chest hear straps or you need a specific one for arms?
Thanks Nick- fantastic and really helpful video! I am undecided about 47 v 51mm and wanted to know how you found wearing the 51mm with shirt cuffs - does it get in the way? Also to ask - with the sleep tracking being a bit iffy- how do you compensate for this when that metric is part of the training readiness? Many thanks, Adrian
51mm is big, as a scruffy man I don't wear a lot of shirts tbh but it did catch on hoodies sometimes, but then the 47mm also does for me too! With readiness the sleep does affect it, though doesn't really undermine the score too much in my opinion, and you can use the score by 'getting to know' it and what you expect to see for yourself over time I found. Not something to rely on completely, but another piece of jigsaw you can look at
I would go to a store and try them both. I have the 47mm and its already really big. Its okey since I only wear it for workouts and sleep tracking. For daily wear it would be way too big for me.
I think it's an amalgamation of him talking a bit fast, but then editing his cuts together too closely. So the next sentence starts too quickly and doesn't give you time to digest what's previously been said.
Technically the Fenix has not an LCD but a MIP display, that is more like ePaper. (Actually MIP is an LCD technology… 🫣) Coming from a Fenix 6S Pro I naturally tried the Fenix 7 Pro first. Maybe it was this particular unit, but I was very disappointed with that display. Way more reflections than my Fenix 6S Pro, thus not as readable. Then I tried the Epix Pro and kept it. The display is so much nicer and I think Garmin is giving a realistic battery life estimation. I can get 5 to 6 days out of it with AOD enabled. Not the 7 to 9 days I'm used to from the Fenix 6S Pro, but manageable.
MIP needs energy to change its content. The shorter the interval the more energy it uses. Like having seconds on your watch face. That is ePaper like. But seems like I was wrong as it is MIP-LCD on deeper inspection. 🤷🏻♂️
