Last weekend I went hiking on a volcano with my son. As the evening approached, a heavy fog rolled in, and I could literally only see one meter ahead. I'm not sure if I would have been able to find my way back, but fortunately, I used the option to return to the starting point. It was reassuring to have topographic maps, a bright screen, excellent GPS (multiband), and, above all, a battery that wouldn't leave me stranded during the hike. I know that Fenix or Epix are more suitable for this kind of activity, but to be honest, I think this watch does it all. The only difference is that it has a less robust body but is lighter and happy to have $500 saved in my wallet. Everyone weighs their priorities differently. Greetings and great video!
@@justincanningthanks for the reaction. What you could improve on is the sound. Had issues with this myself. If you put more sound dampening in the room you record (curtains, blankets, furniture, professional sound dampening) you would lose the Echo. I see other 'talking head' sports content creators creating more dept in their background by using sportsornaments. It increases viewers loyalty during the video cause they see something they can identify or relate with to while being distracted. Sorry if this is unwanted advice. But your content is good. So hope to see your channel flying the next month's.
I really appreciate all of this advice ! Yes the hardwood adds an echo now that I’m listening ! And thanks for the background idea. Something I will try and implement. Of my wife will let me hang up all My old memories haha
Freeakin SENSATIONAL Review!!! I currently have a FR935 and am looking to upgrade and your video may have persuaded me to the OLED display. Great job!! Keep up the training!!!
2:35 thanks for sharing the ‘excellence/perfection’ quote, inspiring. I’m also an Apple Watch user, co-wearing with the Forerunner 945. 965 on-wrist for 5 days now and it’s making the Apple Watch look a bit pale.
Great review, thanks for taking the time. I agree with most of your comments. I love my 965. Sleep tracking on mine is bad. Last night I went to sleep at 22:30 garmin says 23:40. A few days back I was awake for 30 minutes. Garmin says 1 minute 40. Also I've noticed in the last few days my step count is around 1000 when I wake up. I love the suggested workouts. I bought it for the maps but in real life the screen size and the size of the marker make them difficult to see what path to take. I have the same problem as you with Garmin pay.
I’ve been noticing so sleep issues the past two weeks too actually. But I don’t feel like I’m getting the deep sleep that I want either, some might be the watch so might be me.
@@justincanninggarmin is notoriously bad for sleep tracking. Even considering no watch or tracker is great, it’s well behind every major watch and tracker. This is coming from several research oriented RU-vidrs like Quantified Scientist and anecdotal (I’ve used whoop, Apple, Samsung, google, Fitbit, garmins, and oura)
J'ai regardé beaucoup de vidéos sur cette montre car j'avoue hésiter entre celle la et la 265 mais après avoir visionné votre vidéo, je suis convaincu par cette montre. Merci à vous pour votre enthousiasme 👍👍👍👍
Been using the FR 965 for about a year now (mainly for running and workouts). Had multiple Garmin watches before, this one being the best by far. I love how light it feels and the battery life. Maps have saved me from getting lost many of times. Yes it is expensive but well worth it. The only cons (like you say) are the glass and Garmin pay. Still absolutely recommend this to everyone who takes their running (or whatever) a bit serious
the colorful real-life map feature was also one huge reason why i purchased it. the bigger screen with titanium ring frame was another reason. The bluetooth music feature. (which 265 and 165 music edition also includes) Golf feature... I don't play golf yet. but i am sure that one would be great to use. Triathlon mode also seem incredible. Thanks for the concise presentation of the 965. It's not too heavy, and not too bulk. Love it 100% for my marathon running :)
An enjoyable informative video without too much stats. Wasn’t sure which running watch to buy until you said “it’s the ferrari of the forerunners” line. Sold! 🐴
Hey! Since I see you take your time to answer peoples questions I'm gonna give it a shot! First of all, great video! Very detailed and explained really well! Now for my question.. I am searching for a new sports watch since my Venu 1 is really getting old now.. And I can't decide between the Garmin Venu 3, Forerunner 265, Forerunner 965 and the Samsung Watch Ultra.. As far as I have searched the web they are all pretty 'similar' but different at the same time.. To give you an idea of my workouts: I go to the gym 5-6 days a week(Ive been doing this for 12 years and this is my priority), I try to run 30-40km per week, I try to get my 10000 steps in and I sometimes do some indoor bike riding and hiking. I also would wear it all day every day. I asked ChatGPT and he says the Venu 3 is the best cause its the best for tracking strength training. Ive looking into the Fenix 8 and the Epix proaswell but that is just too expensive.. Which watch would you suggest for me? Thanks in advance!
The domed screen is unfortunate on the 965. Albeit you are now seeing it in many Garmin models until getting up to the Epix and Fenix price points. I managed to get a clean TPU screen protector installed on my 965 when I had it after a couple of tries. It is not a fun process.
You sold me & my colleague at work with this one review. We could not stop cracking up at the term "Battery camel" hahaha. Just got set-up and am wearing it now 😎
I prefer non amoled for now but to each their own. I run in the woods quite often, sometimes all day, sometimes a second day after camping. I often have dual frequency gps enabled as I’m running near rock walls and under the forest canopy. So the extra battery life I get with always on lcd is better than amoled for me. Until they improve battery life further with amoled it doesn’t work for me.
This one thing I think that will keep me from getting a new garmin watch. It seems that all their up coming watches will be Amoled. Next year. If garmin keeps up with amoled. I will hope that coros makes a apex 3 pro with non amoled screen
We have a similar issue in the UK with lack of compatible banks for Garmin Pay. My workaround is - I got a credit card with a compatible bank, use that for Garmin Pay and just pay it off automatically at the end of the month from my bank. Works perfectly
Get yourself a Starling Card it works with Garmin Pay.... I use mine as a second account and keep some money in the Starling account, just enough to get by on a ride/run/beach day etc. I used my 945 with Garmin pay on holiday recently to Majorca. Paying for drinks by the pool with my watch was brilliant. Pay in Euros as Starling automatically converts with a really favourable rate. When abroad, I put £800 on the Starling card and just paid for things in Euros using either my phone or watch. You don't need to have Euros in your account.
I don’t inline skate, but one option I’ve read elsewhere is to copy the XC Skate Ski or Skating activity profile and rename it. The motion is the same so it should work.
@@jeff_aurand Yes, that kind of works, but it's still a hack. I don't know why Garmin doesn't want to support it natively, when at the same they start to support sports like SUP and paddle tennis which aren't even Olympic. Granted, speed skating isn't Olympic anymore, but ice speed skating is, which is exactly the same thing on ice.
Thank you so much for this review. I have a 255 and I feel like the 965 is the Smartwatch+activity watch we've always wanted, touch screen amulet display in great with activity tracking I really don't know how they will top this. I just cracked my 255and this is on my wish list. Thank you for the clarification.
Glad it was helpful! I think the 265 would be great too! I don’t use the maps feature much so you might be able to save yourself some cash and go for the 265! Cheers
Great informative video! I'm seriously considering ditching my Apple Watch Ultra as the battery is terrible! Just wondering how the Gorilla Glass holds up? I know you briefly touched on it but is it robust enough to take some significant scrapes and bumps etc?
I had a vivoactive 3 music. For 5 and half years. It’s gorilla glass 3. I only changed this watch to a descent g1 because i’m a diver. I would like to tell you that the glass on my vivo is Brilliantttt. I never used a screen protector. I took this thing ( vivo) on vigorous hikes, triathlons, marathons, and bumped it on doors, walls, harsh paratrooping training. And every time i accidentally did that, i was so scared to look at the watch face and find a crack. But no , only very minor few scratches after those solid almost 6 years it spent with me ❤. Garmins are the best and i hope they stay this way. Btw the battery life on my vivoactive was still kicking up to 5 days instead of 10, even with training, but bluetooth turned off. Now with the sapphire crystal on my descent i can be even more carefree about it
Hi, I have FR965 but I get issued when use Running exercise, sometimes the display still off when I raise my hand, so I must tap the display to turn on. Is that issue happening of your watch?
That is the gesture mode that I was talking about, I was impressed with how well it woke up when I turned my wrist. While running I’ll lift my arm to eye level just to make sure.
Hello. Great review. I wanted to ask you, how was its perfomance while swimming? I swim daily in open water, I am from Greece. I am going to have it next week. Just ordered it for 649 euro. Cant wait.
I open water swim as well, never more than 1000 meters. But it performs incredibly well. GPS is great and the display is easy to read when required ! Enjoy !
Hi there! I also have a Garmin 245 and I’m thinking of changing for this 965. But I have a question that I think you can help: wile on hiking ou trail running can I see de elevation gain? When I start the watch can I see the elevation gain from zero on the screen? Or just in the final os the track when I connect to my phone? Thank you very much.
Yes you can set all elevation gains in your fields for those activities. You get total elevation, average ascent, average decent and a few other options to choose from ! They got you covered ! Cheers
@@justincanning thanks a lot for your quick response. Appreciate that. Do you know by any chance if the 265 have the same ability, or the elevation gain, ascend and descend live while running is just in 965? Thanks again
Which do u recommend in order to build muscle efficient with calesthenic and gym and running 1/2 times a week ? Do you would recommwnd the venu3 or the forerunner265 ?( i have iphone ) Thanks in advance.
Thx for the honest review! I am growing out of my FR 45 and am looking for my next watch. Was gonna go for the 965, but the 255 is now on sale for only USD245 and is such a good bargain. I am mostly a marathoner but occasionally do ultra trail races. Wonder what your thoughts are?
@@AckerQ. The 955 has been on sale for some time now, and I believe its battery life is slightly better than the 965. So I don’t think you can go wrong with the 955. Just my 2 cents
It always shows me my wattage per run which from what I read looks pretty accurate but that is not a running metric I train on. I use it for cycling though.
How much lag does the 965 have when it comes to running pace - Steps per minute? Is it instant or does it lag between 10-20 seconds like most other high end running watches?
Got mine yesterday (had the 165 music before as my first Garmin) and honestly I got it for many other reasons so this one doesn’t really bother me that much, but yeah, Garmin pay is disappointing in some countries. In Brazil so far there’s only one bank that accepts it, and it’s not letting me create an account with them
Sooner or later each of us suffers from training burnout. And I found that I really need one of those stimuluses - it's either a new training kit or a gear. I'd say - go and spoil yourself, you deserve this as training is such a big part of your life. Having said that: yesterday I placed an order for FR965 🤣
I have had the 945 for a couple of years and there doesn’t seem to be enough new stuff to upgrade. It’s got all the same activities, the same useless pay system and it usually lasts me over a week unless I go for multiple multi-hour workouts. I’m not sure about the performance analytics, but they look the same.
@@infeltk Useless in that Garmin has not arranged support with any Canadian banks or credit card companies. Great if you're in the US, not so much elsewhere.
Sleep tracking was much better on my polar. Garmin doesn't detect when I go to sleep correctly. Too bad Polar v3 wast ready in time for my upgrade. Screen is great but hard to read in sunlight. 955 works better there.
Handcycling, sit skiing, race wheelchair, or even regular wheelchair. I’m a para triathlete so this series is meant for me but none of these sports are available. Garmin need to up their game
You can create your own profiles and name it as you wish? Polar has hundreds of sports but it’s basically always heart rate and gps. And you can decide wich metrics to activate. That is in my opinion the least problem as the metric are always mostly the same and just the profile names differ.
The 965 display is amazing. The battery is also amazing. I was skeptical and now would never consider going back to an ugly dull low resolution MIP screen
I have the apple watch series 9, I have the feeling that I have to charge this watch every minutes … I’m bored of it and also it does nothing … like … on a garmin you have everything on your wrist where on this apple watch.. apart from rings and heart rates there’s nothing.. it’s very hard for me to switch because maybe it’s my brain trying to convince me to just have something to play with and go back to my roots of Apple Watch usage … I’m scared to miss some stuffs even if I disable every notifications or don’t truly use connected smart watch features but I might switching there
Ya I am not a notification guy. I’m a huge outdoor activity guy so it is a no brainer. But if you are into tech or staying in the apple ecosystem I get it. Makes sense
@@justincanning I'm tired of my Apple Watch, this is not a good example because I have the beta 7 (almost the final) on the Apple Watch so battery isn't representative but having always on display on, the battery last barely my day ... at the end of the year I'm switching
Sure, the AOD on both watches has an impact on battery, but it's not the main deciding factor on the battery life differences between Apple and Garmin. Apple Watch is a true smart watch with very good sports capabilities and pretty much a mini phone on the wrist. The main deciding factor is how much do you want the watch to do. You can turn off most smart functions and make it equivalent to the Garmin Watch and get 4-5 days of battery out of it, or longer. The Garmin watch is a sports watch with "smart" features, like notifications. But you can't do anything with those notifications. Hence, it isn't doing the same constant computing that the Apple Watch is doing. I think that it's truly unfair to compare the two watches because they are in difference classes. Now, can we compare their sports features, sure. Yes. But to compare them as smart watches, there is no comparison, the Apple Watch wins hands down.
Most Apple Watch’s don’t make it through a marathon, and even if they do they are barely making it. I don’t need that battery life on my conscious during a race. That’s my view. Apple Watch for a daily driver isn’t a bad choice, just rough for the long endurance pieces.
@@justincanning My series 6 made it through a marathon, but it was pretty damned low when I was done. Most newer would be better, and with low power mode, could make it easily. But the Ultra/Ultra 2 will absolutely make it!
I have the apple watch ultra and the garmin 965 and a series 8 and as I love them all, I use my ultra way more, my garmin is only used in certain ways and time where as my ultra is made for every day use period. Also the sleep tracker is no where near the accuracy of the apple watch, nor the heart rate data just check for yourself buy your self a polar h10 chest strap and check it out! this is mine and mine alone opinion.
Agreed. The sleep tracking is pretty bad, which throws all the other metrics off. However, as a hiking companion, the Garmin is far superior. It’s hard to get rid of the Garmin when its battery and maps are so good.
@@Mdogbrown I agree the problem I have is how damn near everyone says it’s spot on at sleep when I know it’s far far off. Everything else on my Garmin Epix gen 2 pro 51 mm
@@davidbraswell1481 Yes, I have the same watch. Everything else is great, except sleep. I grew tired of it and just use my Apple Watch to track sleep because I know it’s MUCH more accurate. Everything else, Garmin.
The 965 is not compatible with the quick bike mount. And while you can get the universal bike mount, at issue is that if, as a triathlete, you used both the quick mount for the bike as well as the wrist-strap version to transfer the watch from your wrist to the bike at T1 and back at T2, you've got no wrist solution now. Yeah, I know, those take extra seconds during transition, but I'm not a podium guy. And I'd rather not have a separate bike computer. That Garmin switched from the screw-in pins from earlier models to standard spring pins conveys no obvious advantage cost wise. But the quick fit mount compatibility issue is annoying.
I had to justify the cost of them as well, but I am very happy with them since April. Display is amazing, I love all the features, battery life is awesome, Garmin pay works for me in my country, which is nice. I have only one complaint - I had to create 2 activities which are not included by default (inline skates and scooter), I copied them from similar ones, but when you finish this activity, it's shown as original activity in the Garmin app. But it's not that big of a deal, maybe it will be fixed in the future update. I can only recommend :)
I love my Garmin forerunner 965 but the probleme with Garmin pay, it’s the banks who don’t accepte Garmin. But i don’t really care about it. For the gorilla glass DX 3 if you'r not an extreme hiker or biker = Nevermind the sapphire cristal display.
Triathlete math: I have a 30% off coupon and i'm gonna sell my FR745 for $300 and i'll use my health spending account yearly coverage to cover $300 of this, it's basically "free"
I appreciate your passion about number of activities. Down here in Europe, but also all over the world, people do Skating and Inline skating. Both fitness and speed. This is also Olympic sport. There are Marathon events too. But for many years Garmin pretends this sport do not exists. In last update there is only Ice Skate added to list of options, but not Inline Skate. For your info this sport is known to Garmin. It is under Other group in Garmin Connect, but you are not able to setup such activity to be on the same level as all those you have mentioned. You do Triathlon. Are you able to have prepared Workout with Event course and PacePro setup? Yes, fine. Then now please try to add Custom alerts to notify you eg to Drink or Eat. Well I am not able to do this on my watch. This feature works just fine, when you have "free" activity. Not carefully prepared workout with course plotted. For me those two things are not end of the world, but Garmin is not listening to users.
Five days? The original screen gives two weeks, and is far less intrusive as an everything watch. It definitely is not requirement to have an OLED screen. The opposite.
This is such a click bait 🤣 so you do like the watch. Nothing is perfect, your negatives seemed like their personal opinion and not opinions for everyone to benefit from. I don’t use the pay or a screen protector ever. So the watch is pretty much perfect for me. Mainly want to use for fitness, not shopping.
This watch sent me back to the Apple Watch Ultra. Everything is just mid. They tricked all of us with the oled, but it’s just a 955 with less battery life. Is there In my desk collecting dust since last month… too bad I sold my 955.
@@justincanning Hey! Yeah, I’m sure they’ll have all these updates in the next 975. My take is that they should adjust their line up, there are just too many Garmin watches. As an Ironman, I’ll ever use the top of the line FR, but for now I’m just giving the Apple Watch the chance, so far, so good, and the Stryd app an the AWU is just amazing! In the FR965 the numbers go out of the screen, Garmin pay is a joke, and so little use outside training. Never say never, maybe the next one convinces me. Thanks for answering!
mine is going back not even 3 days !!! what a waste of money !!! you gotta be some special FLID to think a 600 quid watch is worth that and it takes a day just to install an app - you happy with purchase LOL
Soon as they add cellular to Garmin you can kiss battery life good bye! also with sleep focus enabled on AWU it is getting almost the same battery as the 965 with all its features enabled and all apple watches battery savings enabled I am getting 6 days with Garmin 965 and getting almost 4 days with AWU with cellular, yes I know I can use more battery savings and get 23 + days on the 965 but I bought the watch for its nice display and its sports features battery means nothing to me as they both go on the charger every morning while I'm in the shower and getting ready for my day they are both fully charged and ready to go. If your too lazy to charge a "sports watch" daily why bother lol ......I didn't think I'd like my Garmin but I do, I actually like it a lot, but Garmin needs a major overhaul on the way it gives you the data... apples is so much easier with athlytic and work outdoors it turns AWU into a Garmin killer for me it is more customizable than any Garmin watch currently on the market
@@justincanning I just got the Epix gen 2 pro 51mm Sapphire and Titanium the silver with white bands and it is awesome. It has way more features than my 965 and it just feels like a watch, where the 965 felt more like an advanced kids watch.( with materials used) I got the watch today and have not been able to put it down. I really think Garmin needs to make a watch that has cellular and has super bright screen like apples for the folks that want a SMART GARMIN WATCH! they were on to something with the venu 3 but again build quality and materials just missed the mark. we need a Garmin watch with cellular awesome building materials and a super bright screen like 2000 nits + like apples. I'd say make a smart Marq watch just for the ones that want it and make it super nice with extreme craftsmanship and then charge me !!!! I'd buy it.
