I don't have autopilot. My Navionics has shown the Magenta line that would have taken me into downtown Huntsville. Think I'll just trust these old 62 year old eyes.

The magenta line can definitely get you into trouble! I think Garmin has removed it - at least it has stopped showing up on my chart plotter. :)

Regarding the forward and backward directions, I’m pretty sure it depends on how you route was created. Waypoint numbers going up forward. Going down backward. I didn’t know this and was right on the line and engaged the AP (going slow thankfully) and it insisted on taking me in yhe other direction. 😄 Switching forward to backward or vice versa corrected the problem. How do you see the direction in advance so to prevent the AP taking a hard turn? I think I saw a route preview button on the screen… is that how? Thank you. ☺️

The forward and backward is not dependent on the number of the waypoints. I routinely add and subtract waypoints so their number don’t necessarily correlate to waypoints around them. It just depends on where you placed the first turn (when you first touch the screen to create a route). The route begins there and ends at the last turn you place, so going in that direction is forward (beginning to end) is forward. This is true even if you engage AP in the middle of the route. Going the opposite direction (end to beginning) is backwards or reverse. If you were attempting to go in the forward direction and it tried to turn you in the opposite direction, you may have the reverse feature selected on your auto pilot. If you suspect this, check out EP-70, How to Disable Garmin’s Reverse Feature.

@@CruisingThisOldBoat Yes! I had actually seen that vid before and disabled that feature. 👍👍 Thanks for that video! That wasn’t my problem thought. I have routes that I made not knowing which end was the starting point. So, the forward/reverse route becomes important. Can I use route preview to know for sure before selecting navigate to?

@@UrjunkMygold - yes - if you choose a route and then select to preview or review it, it will display the route - one end should show a checkered flag - that is the end destination of the route
