A feature I find really useful of pairing a chest strap (non-Garmin apparently work as well) is to record breathing rates while exercising. Some Garmin watches will use that to automatically detect your lactate threshold and update whenever you do a workout that changes it. Very useful to find your zone 2 and keep it constantly updated.
@catalin5218
@catalin5218 Год назад
could u elaborate more? i never heard of it
@dankspain
@dankspain Год назад
@@catalin5218 If you pair a Forerunner or some other Garmin watches to a chest strap you will be able to do a guided workout to determine your Lactate Threshold. Once you do that your Garmin can update it every time you go above it and it detects it. Of course you need a chest strap every time. What I do is wear a chest strap when I do intervals or threshold runs. For tempo or zone 2 I don’t wear it as you don’t go above your threshold.

The video is great although I gotta say the Accuracy is a big flaw. For example I’ve been using the wahoo heart rate and for almost a year has been giving me a huge amount of calories out while cycling example on a 25 miles ride shows 1600 calories out on a single ride, another example 50 miles give me about 2,500 calories out on a single ride and myself though that’s great….. but the reality was hard to swallow, I recently bought a power meter for a better accuracy and boy o boy the heart rate is totally trash. Did the same routes with power meter and heart rate and on 25 miles give me 800 calories out and on 50 miles give about 1600 calories out. With that being said at this point I’m just using the heart rate to track the progress on my exercises more than checking the calories out because is not accurate at all
@DesFit
@DesFit 4 месяца назад
While power can yield a more accurate calorie calculation, it also sounds like your HR zones or physiological metrics may not be set up correctly. I'd check that in whatever app or device you are recording with.

It's been great for those types of activities, without wearing a watch. I only wish that I could log that data to an activity in the app. The only work around is to create an activity and manually input the data from the HMR-Prp + But regardless, it's still a great device.

@mikeainsworth4504
@mikeainsworth4504 8 месяцев назад
I use a Polar Verity around my upper arm connected to my Forerunner/ Edge and have never had any issues. I switched to an optical sensor because my chest strap sensor continuously over-read - it used to give me an average HR of over 200 for activities. A friend of mine who was a doctor explained that some people’s hearts can give off additional electrical pulses when working hard (there was a medical term but I forgot it) which confused chest HRMs that counted it as an extra beat. I was put through some tests while connected to an ECG machine whilst wearing my HRM which showed that it was over-reading at when I was working hard. That was back in 2013, so chest HRMs may have solved this now; but, the optical one works for me and I am. It tempted to spend the money on a new chest strap just to find out.

Des, great content - as usual!! I had HRM Dual and also purchased HRM Pro (paired w/Fenix 7X). With the HRM Dual I can calibrate (e.g. override) the treadmill distance when running indoors on my Fenix 7X. However, with the HRM Pro, it does not allow for "calibration" when running on the treadmill. In your example, the data was pretty close - but that is not always the case. Therefore, I tend to use the Dual on the treadmill, and the Pro outdoors. When traveling - I take both. Crazy, I know. So what do you do? Hey Des, I’ve had my HRM Tri for around 5 years now. 3 days ago I noticed it wasn’t connecting to my Garmin Forerunner 735. This has never happened before and it just says “no devices found” , I’ve changed the battery and still no connection. Would you say that after all this time and use it’s finally died ? I’m clearly looking to buy a new upgrade hence why I’m watching your video 😊

What would you recommend to pair with for the coros pace 2 Des?! I’m running and biking and not really swimming! Thank you

How about 2 users in the same house. Can you swap the strap user to user? (Significant other, our primary use while be weekly lactate threshold testing)

Yup, there are no limitations when it comes to switching from one person to another.

Will it read out my current HR to my phone which I place on the TM?

Thanks for the video! I was actually wondering recently on whether these straps were a good investment as my HRM-RUN seemed to die after about 2 years... I replaced it with the HRM-Dual due to the replaceable strap... 2 years is the general standard life for these? Thanks again!

I've heard anything from 18 months to multiple years so I think it varies. Although I have friends who have straps that are 3+ years old and are still good to go!

One of the biggest flaws with the Garmin HRM pro is that after you unscrew the device to change the battery, it is never water-tight again. And it will slowly corrode the inside electrics. Many people have broken their HRM pro because of this

Hi Des, great informative video thanks! Quick question, at about 8:50 you talk about recording HR information without the watch. Does this also include if you're working (i.e. not a recognised activity)? I'm a Firefighter and have often wondered about recording some data during calls but don't like to wear my watch. If I understand you correctly would HR, HRV, Resp Rate, all be downloaded to my Instinct 2 when I get back to station, filling in the blank from when I removed my watch? Thanks heaps!

There's two ways this could work. If you do not manually start an activity on your watch but just wear the strap, the HRM Pro/Pro Plus would store your heart rate and steps which would then be synced with Garmin Connect on your smartphone which would then be accounted for in your daily calories. However if you did start an activity on your watch, your heart rate data during the activity could then be downloaded later when you go to save your activity (and can even be done later if need be). But with the latter, that would create a separate, timed activity and not sure how you would best classify a fire call :) For that scenario just wearing the strap and not starting an activity could be the best but totally up to you! 👍

Thank you for the video. If you don't mind I have one question: My FR 255 gives me vertical oscillation, ground contact time and cadence. Are these accurate data from the watch or is a chest strap more accurate? Thanks.
@DesFit

The results are very similar, it's just that the HRM Pro would also provide left/right balance.

Indeed top performance coupled with the absolute lowest crappy quality. Don't expect a Garmin HRM band to last 2 years without eating batteries like a Tesla (average use: 1 hr/day) and falling apart despite maniacal care: thoroughfully wash, rinse, dry naturally and never bend after EACH use. And don't tell me it probably was a defective item, because I'm on the fourth one in few years. I know "fool me twice, shame on me", anyway I'm still reluctant to switch to more reliable ones, such as Polar (golden standard), because I'm deeply stuck in a Garmin environment. That's my 2c ...

Still have an original HRM run 1st generation module, strap is long since gone. Never understood Garmin's production of straps and modules that can't be separated. Read about loads of people, getting their HRM's replaced after they begin to fail, after a short period of time, particularly after a battery replacement. Bought Polar's H9 strap, when my Garmin module finally started to be unreliable and replaced its strap with a Polar pro strap. I'd probably get a Dual strap if I did return to a Garmin HRM and combine it with a Polar pro strap. I don't really need all the extra analytics of a Pro, as my 255 will give me Power on the wrist.
