Garmin inReach VS. ZOLEO (Satellite Communicators)

Garmin has seemingly had a monopoly on the satellite communicator market for outdoor athletes. Recently, Zoleo has joined in on the competition with a device that is a great balance of value for price. On a recent hunt, Marcus Hockett took it to compare it against the Garmin inReach mini who the cameraman, Michael Parente, brought with.
So they were able to do a side by side comparison while in the middle-of-nowhere Idaho. Having never heard of Zoleo before, Marcus is pleasantly surprised as it holds it own at a much lower price point and has some benefits on the monthly pricing plan as well.
The inReach has live tracking, allowing friends and family to constantly be tracking where in the world you are. The Zoleo has an update feature where you can share your location, but it doesn't do it automatically all the time. Depending on your needs, Zoleo might be worth the money savings.

With the inreach you can select month to month plans. Use it during hunting season then don't renew it again until you need it. No cancelation fees or monthly fees for not using it.
@Raevenswood
@Raevenswood 2 года назад
If you average the lower cost of zoleo service in general with the only 4$ a month they charge to deactivate until you need it again it is still a lot cheaper than the inreach service especially taking into account that the inreach mini costs 350$ vs 200$ for the zoleo. Higher start up cost plus Garmin also tacks on additional monthly charges to unlock the ability to deactivate it when you aren’t using it … about 15$ a month more for each level of service they provide. If you use it for 5 months of the year that’s 75$ extra vs deactivating zoleo for 7 months at 4$ a month it’s less than 30$. Zoleo can also be canceled completely and you can reactivate later you just won’t keep the same phone number. The only catch with zoleo is they lock you into 2 months of introductory service so you can’t just sign up for one trip and then cancel within the first month but it’s still cheaper in the long run anyway for most users.

Actually if you are only going to use it for a month or two the InReach is cheaper. You pay a $25 annual subscription with comes out to just over $2 a month vs. $4 a month for the Zoleo. I use the safety plan which is only $15 per month on the InReach and never have an issue going over my limit because the preset text messages "just checking in, everything is okay" are free and don't count against your quota. So if I hunt 2 months it costs $55 per year with the InReach vs. $80 for the Zoleo. $25 per year less would have paid for the difference in the cost of the unit over the 5 years I've owned my Inreach.
@mdtnak
@mdtnak 3 года назад
Not sure where you see $25 for In-Reach flex fee, as what I am looking at states $35 [discover.garmin.com/en-US/inreach/personal/#subscriptions], but even then IN reach comes out ahead in your example. Maybe Garmin just bumped up the Flex-Plan fee this year? That said, your point is right spot on. In terms of a 2M stint, IN reach is cheaper than Zoleo at a 3M, even if you cancel Zoleo instead of pay the additional $36 to maintain for the remaining 9 months.

This fall the inreach has been terrible, I've had mine for 5 years and never had a problem until this year. The tech person I spoke to told me it was do to a software issue but I was fully upgraded to the current edition so I don't know what the problem was but there were three of us and we were all together and it was taking 12 hours for messages to get to one another from inreach to inreach. can you explain how inreach is more if suspended? How i read it garmin would be less expensive while suspended.... Garmin just has an annual 25 dollar "flex fee" but no monthly suspension fee. In other words, with the zoleo, the $4 suspension fee equates to almost $50 per year while garmin is only 25? Am i missing something?
@mdtnak
@mdtnak 3 года назад
Zoleo requires a 3M minimum, so the suspension fee would be $36 for the remaining 9 months. That said, you don't have to suspend Zoleo and can cancel. Their activation fee is less than the 9-month suspension fee, so they do not incentivize suspension, whereas Garmin does. The best price you can get out of the Zoleo plan is $80, which is a 3M basic plan. That is the same with Garmin [$80 for 3M on basic]. Where Garmin comes out ahead is when people only need it for 1 or 2 months.

iNreach has a month to month option. Just buy what you want. No need for a yearly subscription rate. From their web page: Enrollment in Freedom plans is subject to a $24.95 annual fee. A Freedom plan's minimum term is 30 days. New 30-day minimum applies to changed Freedom plans. No charge applies to changing a Freedom plan. Service can be suspended 1 month at a time at no charge. User retains access to inReach data stored on the Garmin Explore™ portal while account is suspended. Selected plan auto-renews monthly unless user changes account selections in the Garmin Explore portal. So if Zoleo charges 4 bucks a month during suspension they are actually more expensive in the long run.

To clarify - when you type and send a message over satellite with the Zoleo device you need to use the app. The person back home will get the message over cell or wifi just like a regular email or text in whatever app they use for that, and can reply and send you messages with their regular email or text app. But they can also use the free Zoleo app if they want, without a device, you don't which is great because when you're sending messages between two Zoleo apps you can do longer messages, 1000 characters or so.

Amazing tech. Just push a button and you have a chance at survival. My cousin's husband disappeared on a guided elk hunt in the Wyoming mountains deep in the back-country almost 45-years ago...they never found the body. The family spent nearly $100k on private searches after the rescue services gave up. No Tech, no helicopters or infrared, no radio. They suspected he was either attacked by a bear ...or suffered a diabetic incident and fell off the mountain disoriented... and maybe was dragged-away by a bear. How you lose someone on a house-mounted professionally-guided hunt??

I was in High School at the time, but parts of it never made sense. Though the impression I got from a distance (we lived on the East Coast) was first-time elk-hunting in the back country is not a manly group bonding activity for a bunch of Minneapolis dentists who weren't even good Boy Scouts. It took YEARS to have him declared and settle the estate. The consensus was that he couldn't have walked out without provisions, they were too far back in the mountains. Plus he was diabetic and didn't have his meds. Somehow the guide wasn't held responsible(!), and the family didn't even re-coup the search expenses. Local politics perhaps.... Today I doubt a reputable guide would have accepted their party in the first place.
