Old metal detectors are like old radios. All the old electrolytic capacitors (The can type) and many Tantalum capacitors will need to be replaced or they will perform VERY VERY badly.
Yeah I know, one thing at a time. I went ahead and fixed the broken ears on the coil in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UYBvIK7WjKE.html Somebody asked me about the voltage on the battery sled, so I covered that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Mj0Rq9BJus.html And then I took it out for a swing in Wisconsin and my arm hurt for like a week after: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ELNhYM_fJeU.html I was working to reverse engineer the unit and have details of that endeavor here: plus.google.com/u/0/collection/0yIllB There are only three electrolytics that need to be changed, and maybe a polystyrene or two. The reverse engineering stopped due to the part numbers being acid wiped off the chips.
This detector was early to mid 80's and sold for around $800 new, they were great in their day and with a few cap's replaced and the battery system modified can still be great detector today. You will find relics, coins and gold with one. Great find for $20 and if you spend a $100 fixing it up it's still a bargain. Good luck with it.
I doubt it will take $100 to change the capacitors. I repaired the ears in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UYBvIK7WjKE.html I also provided another person with the battery voltages in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Mj0Rq9BJus.html
Thanks! This has become one of my more popular videos. I need to do a follow up video where I fix the broken mounting on the coil and do some reverse engineering on the electronics!
Here is a video of me swinging this old beast: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ELNhYM_fJeU.html Also fixing the ears on the coil: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UYBvIK7WjKE.html and somebody was curious about the battery voltages on the connector: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6Mj0Rq9BJus.html
More like late 70's, I wish you luck in using it. I purchased an ADS II after many years of using my Garrett BFO. Man, I sure had fun and found a lot of coins; plus other stuff with it! What do you think about all of those batteries?
Nice find however there was no need to open the box and mishandle the circuit. This is non value added usually should be opened only to perform some updates on replacing the caps and inspecting the soldering. In time the solder joints may exhibit oxidation around cold solder joints. The caps should be tested first while they are still in its original state. If possible while the unit is powered on check for the frequency while it is operating and note it. Check the cap after it is pulled out and possibly with an additional tank circuit. Get creative and subject it to temperature changes. Then get an exact replacement and conduct the same tests and see the fluctuation. Some of the variations may be compensated with the adjustments while operating the unit but not a guarantee. Replacing the caps can render the unit useless if you are not careful. Good luck.

I have a III that garners no interest in the geographical area I am. It's been stored away for over 15 years. I have no idea if it works. What is the best way to get it off my hands
I just bought a master hunter 7..how do i remove the batteries? Just pull the tray out? The tray seems to be stuck..is it connected to a clip? Dont want to force it out
Hi, i have a Garret 7x for service as the coil chassis connector (5-pin, but 1 is missing. is it normal?) was totally pulled out and no pcb wires also. do you have a re-wire schematics for this?. thanks for any help....
I was attempting to reverse engineer my ADS II, but Garrett has acid wiped all the part numbers from the chips. The coil connector my ADS II has five wires attached to it. I'll dig through my notes tonight from the reverse engineering attempt - I can most likely point you to right location for re-attaching the wire. In the meantime, check out my G+ page on it - it might be of some help: plus.google.com/u/0/b/114781839931200558268/photos/114781839931200558268/album/6369372334805580753/6369372334203001586?authkey=CL_BjvOIgoqPkgE
Hi again and thanks for your quick reply. If i had the ADS model your G+ page photos would do the job. The 7x is a 90s model (newer of ADS) and the pcb board quite different (smd and with more functions). Trying to find some photos of board like yours but for the 7x or a service manual pdf, no luck though!. Stupid thing to erase the id data of chips (bad old behavor of companies) but mine is ok. If you'll find anything just let me know, would be great. Thanks again for your help and support....
I have found an image of Garrett 7x pcb board in a forum but it's not so clear and i can not use it. you can see at the top the coil connector and the wires attached to pcb board (these wires are missing to my pcb board and need to be re-wired). the image link is www.mobilex.gr/7x.jpg ....
Doesn't sound like it will help you, but I uploaded a picture showing the wiring on the one I have. plus.google.com/u/0/b/114781839931200558268/photos/photo/114781839931200558268/6406098047402673026?icm=false&authkey=CKTT6fWn05aDyAE Pin 1 is not connected - so only 4 connections and two of them are ground.
He just wants a ball park number to help him understand the worth. People been saying they picked theirs up for $10 or so. 1 guy said it's worth about $10 even if you have to put $100 into it. It us a but confusing pinpointing a fair sell price. I picked up a pristine one tiday for $10 I think it's worth a tiny bit more because it literally is liks brand new.
