Early actors Dick Van Dyke and Chuck McCann portray
Laurel and Hardy - also as Jackie Gleason and Art Carney
in seperate skits about selling vacuum cleaners
in this very rare 1958 Kinescope footage from
CBS-TV's The Garry Moore Show -
The host's name here is Richard (?) -
The 'Hoover' announcer here is Durward Kirby

All of the emphasis is on Laurel & Hardy, but their imitations of Gleason and Carney are excellent!

This was from the daytime version of "THE GARRY MOORE SHOW", from the time when Garry was "on vacation", and a substitute host like Richard [Hayes?] filled in for him. Dick and Chuck were still "on the fringes" of TV employment; McCann would find great success as a local N.Y. TV "kid host" in the '60s, while Van Dyke...incidentally, Stan Laurel admired Dick's impression of him, as well as Chuck's "Oliver Hardy"- McCann went on to co-found "The Sons Of the Desert", the worldwide L&H "society".

The Garry Moore Show is such a hoot! I wish more of these episodes were available. Garry was a great talent that is all but often forgotten today.

I watched these shows when I was a teenager. It's great to see them again! Very nostalgic.

When DIck did Stan on his own show, he called up Stan to ask him what he thought. To paraphrase: "Quite good, Dickie ... just a few things.." Then Van Dyke reported that Stan went on for maybe 30 minutes explaining all of the nuances of his character that he missed. Dick said he wished he had recorded the call. It was like an encyclopedia of comedy!

I used to watch the daytime version of the Garry Moore show when I was a little kid. Thanks for bringing back a long forgotten memory! As far as "polite laughter" mentioned below, these shows didn't have a very big studio audience if they had one at all. Some of the laughter sounds as if it's coming from the stage crew and the host.

thanks for posting this. That Chuck McCann fellow is quite a gifted mimic! I remember that Mad Magazine once referred to Durward Kirby as an "All-around Television Something-or-other."

Chuck McCann was so talented. He almost out Gleasons Gleason in that sketch. However, though he was as talented as almost any comic out there (and more than some bigger names) his career seems to have stalled somewhere along the road. He never was A list and deserved to be. I wonder why?

Now let's see how The Three Stooges would do it!

Chuck was a MUCH better mimic than Dick. His Norton was a bit better than his Stan. His Stan never stopped moving! The whole bit lacked the humor, editing, and nuance that the resl team had. Even though it was done live.
