I think Sir Don was absolutely stoked to realize that here was someone possibly as brilliant at cricket as he was. What a great gesture by him to be part of this special reflection on Sobers' brilliant innings.
Nineteen seventy two I was in my twenties when Sobers made that score.After fifty years it is a pleasure to watch the video.A legend and great teacher indeed.
I admired Garfield Sobers when I was just 14 years old and after 56 years now I cannot forget the innings I saw him play at Eden Gardens Calcutta against India. He scored just 65 runs coming 5 down but I saw the power of his ground strokes the ball flying like a bullet. I was lucky to see him live also bowl medium fast and also come on to bowl spin on the same evening against India. The foot work of Gary is gives him the ability to play any ball and invariably he never lets ago any bowl and had great ability with bat, bowl, medium pace and spin, because there is no such person in world cricket still now. He was an excellent fieldsman with versatile display not only as a player but also never lost his cool. One of the greatest all rounder cricket has ever produced.

Bradman was quite vocal about the inning and allegedly approached the ABC to ensure a special was made to ensure it would not be forgotten. We can now see why. It is also rumored that Sobers exclaimed ‘shot boy!’ (a Caribbean expression of high praise) when he executed the famous savage square cut against Lillee.
Thank you for sharing. This has to be amongst the most amazing clips on batting and the genius of Sir Garry. It deserves to be much better known for the batting and the commentary. Every Cricket fan needs to watch this for the genius that is Sir Garry. Some of the shots, the driving and cutting of the back foot are simply incredible. His balance and the use of repeated slow and slower motion is brilliant! Why don't we see more of that today with all the resources that we have. To top it all, Sir Donald Bradman commenting and the praise and detailed commentary on so many shots. His ability to describe what he's seeing and what Sobers is doing is incredible. I'm not qualified to comment but what strikes one on so many of the back foot drives is that Sir Garry doesn't use big or violent strides with his feet - his feet are very quiet and it's amazing how quickly he's set himself for the shot. And then that follow through! Simply amazing! Thank you!
Yes, this is very typical of the great left handed West Indian batters, with their weight on the back foot when they drive with power to a full bowl angling away towards the slips. Lara was the same, they would transfer weight to the back foot, without too much lateral or exaggerated back or forward movement. I suppose it leaves lots of room for the bat to come through, in order to get power into the shot.

He was already an almost mythical figure while still playing in the late 60s when I first started watching cricket, a bit like Pele in football. As an all-round cricketer, he is still without peer in the history of the game.

It's interesting that Bradman rated this innings (as did many others who saw it) as perhaps the greatest of all time yet it was played in a match not rated as a test with no international prestige at stake.
On a side note, when the Rest of the World team landed in Australia, there was a local contingent at the airport to meet them. Tong Grieg handed over his kit bag to a shortish man and the person duly obliged and carried it - suddenly some of them reacted in horror and rushed to take it away from this person - he was Don Bradman!
Watch Sobers closely against Lillee and Massey - he is absolutely still until the ball comes out of their hand. Talk about playing late! Theres no big foot movement, more of a perfect transfer of weight. Incredible reflexes. Clearly in the top 5 batsman in history.

I saw Sobers at Lords st the age of 40 score 154 not out open the bowling and bowling left arm orthodox and China men and taking 7 wickets and 6 catches behind the wicket to break the world record. Greatest cricketer of all time.
This is very interesting commentary. I saw Sobers play at Lords in 1963, and although I vaguely remember some shots to the boundary, he did not make a large score. I also recall that it was very close at the end - I just checked, and I see that England needed 5 runs to win with one wicket remaining.
I agree with Charu Choudhari. Sir Gary is the greatest batsman and greatest cricketer of all times. Faced all type of attack and from most of the countries. Bradman has mostly played against England. Although Bradman's average and records are unmatched, Sir Gary never played for records.(26 test hundreds he could have easily broken Bradman's record. He could bowl fast, medium and spin. An outstanding fielder as well. There is no one like Sir Gary Richards and perhaps never can be!!!!
I had seen Sobers playing on Brabourne Stadium Mumbai when I was small since then I have not seen any cricketer playing perfectly like Sobers. It was very difficult to any Bowler to get him out.
The greatest batsman analyzes the greatest cricketer. What more can you ask? Shimron Hetmyer ought to pay more attention to the genius of his batting ancestor. I see glimpses of Sobers in his batting style but they're too few and far between right now.

Kangaal...Yes,I once met him at Taj in Mumbai to present one of my creations to him and the compliments he gave me for that are unforgettable.No Indian cricketer including our great BharatRatna..never said even 'Thanks' to me when I presented them with one of my creations which won great compliments from the likes of Sir Gary,Sir Vivian,Steve Waugh-and our great Vijaybhai Merchant the only one who encouraged me and with whom I started all this.It took quite some to know the mind set of our own Indian Players who simply received but never said an encouraging word to me.Let them go to hell! I was a toddler at the time and don't remember it. Sobers six hitting feat was before I was born. However, my mother is five days older than Sobers - I found this out!
bongo155 Statistics don't show you everything.. even Viv Failed against New Zealand same as Sobers as overseas so does that mean they are not One of the Best ever. Sachin has 50 + Average vs Australia but still he was not a Match Winner and never has played an innings like Sobers , Viv and Gavaskar . So what you do with your 50 + Average if it's not as influential as these players . Sobers failed in New Zealand and Pakistan but He was Dominated , imactful , Match Winner and Entertainer Batsman who Despite of carried the Burden of An All Rounder and Captaincy but still Helped his team out of mud On Many Ocations .

He even got a man of the series, in 1999, which was against the strongest Australian bowling ever - consisting of Mcgrath, Warne, Fleming and a rampaging Lee on debut (in spite of getting 3 dreadful umpiring decisions in a span of 6 innings). His 116 in 1999 is the best innings you can ever witness, on an extremely bouncing swinging pitch, wickets kept tumbling at the other end, he was the lone man standing.

Yes, I was going to comment about that. It seems that every ball Lillie bowled was a no-ball. Scandalous. The umpires probably decided not to follow the rules. Anyway, Lillie got smashed all over the ground by Sobers, so that is justice done. Lillie by the way was very intimidating and probably not a very nice guy.

Thats a blatant lie. Don said "this boy (Sachin) bat's like me). Nothing more or less, there's not even video proof. On other hand, this video is testimony to Don accepting Gary Sobers as one of greatest cricketers
