Having rolled with Lucas before I can say that the man has some of the tightest, most immobilizing pressure out there. His game is a nightmare if you like to go inverted or play a deep half guard. Garry is amazing, but Lucas' game sort of cancels his out.
Herman Melville and different than Cobrinha pressure. He doesn’t use pulling intense power. Just pure dead weight smothering the hips in every direction you turn them until they are useless.
Ryan Parker interesting. I always thought Lepri and Cobrinha had similar looking knee slides and top pressure. But I’ve never rolled with either. You’d say Lepri is more relaxed dead weight than Cobrinha?
Garry's jiu-jitsu is not point-scoring jiu-jitsu-friendly, which is actually very good to me. That said, Lucas' pressure game looks absolutely stifling.
ElephantRage Lucas doesn’t have a heavily grip based game. He’s won no gi worlds twice also. His passing style and single x bottom game translates into no gi. He was my coach and I was one of his training partners for three years and I never trained no gi and when I did once in a while or when I did a no gi completion it all transferred.
It's not the gi that makes you a good no-gi grappler it's the grappling. Royler Gracie in his book talks about you have to train in no-gi months ahead of time before completing in a no-gi tournament.
To all the chumps who shit-talk IBJJF and ADCC while trumpeting EBI as the wave of the future, I kindly present Exhibit A for why the real best of the best don't make their name in sub-only tournaments. Garry is damn good, world-class even, but Lucas is one of the very best to ever compete at his weight. Had the chance to roll with him at a seminar in 2010, or possibly 2011, back when I was a blue belt, and he must've submitted me at least 6 or 7 times while hardly even breaking a sweat. Absolutely unreal.
LOL Tonon lost because he is no match for top Bjj players. He is simply overrated and hugely exposed thanks to Joe Rogan and Eddie Bravo. He is very very good but in the world scene he is 2nd tier.
Nah fam. Gary's game plan was great for his opponent. Lepri never let him begin to mount his offense because of the pressure he putting on. If you dont think being able to completely shut down your opponents game while advancing your position and maintaining control is worth watching maybe bjj isnt for you. Danaher continually talks about how control is paramount and that just because you are not in a traditional position doesnt mean you are not in control. Maybe im missing something, but i didnt see tonon ever start to really to get that control. Gary had to try more things because he was losing. He did not lose because he tried more things.
If you don't like it agree with wins by points in BJJ, then similarly, most boxing wins must be b.s., too - unless there's a knock out. What's more, most wrestling matches must suck, too - unless there's a pin. 🤔 Points demonstrate moments of a punishing attack (boxing) or positional dominance or attack potential. So, the competitor is awarded points.
