As a five-time Grammy Award-winning musician, Gary Burton is one of the most commercially successful mallet players in history. For the better part of his professional career, Burton has used his position to help educate and mentor the next generation of musical talent, teaching at institutions around the world.
Vic Firth is excited to present Gary's 8-part Vibraphone Masterclass series to you, recorded backstage in Boston's Symphony Hall. In this series, Burton covers the full gamut of common questions on the instrument -- from it's history to his famous 4 mallet grip.

I respect Gary a lot. This video was not around when I was coming up. I’ve been playing for a long time. And I figured a lot of this stuff out on my own that gary figured out on his own. The one thing that he mentions that I disagree with is, he said that for him playing single lines with the two inside mallets caused more blistering on his right hand when he used the outside mallet with his right hand. When I did that playing single lines with the left-hand inside mallet, and the right hand outside mallet, I tore my index finger up causing severe blistering and callousing. It was constantly bleeding, and it was frequently big and people would look at it…embarrassing! when I started playing lines with my two inside, mallets, a lot less blistering occurred on my finger.
