Prof. Gary Gallagher joins me to discuss his latest book entitled, "The Enduring Civil War: Reflections on the Great American Crisis."
Gary Gallagher is the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War Emeritus at the University of Virginia. He is the author and editor of more than forty books on the Civil War and its memory.

Our discussion will begin at 7:00 PM Eastern and will continue for roughly one hour. I will monitor the comments to pull some questions for the audience as time permits.

I attended his lecture in Maryland historical society in Baltimore about the Antietam campaign in september 2002. He had just published a book containing essays about the battle and the campaign, some of them written by him, some by others. But all taking a fresh look on aspects of the campaign rarely visited. Off course I bought the book with his signature there and then after the lecture.

Gallagher's enthusiasm and sense of humor are contagious. His Teaching Company series on The Civl War still captivates.

Catton lit the fuse for Gary (and John) and Gary lit the fuse for me. He was a staple on the History Channel in its glory days and those shows were very influential for me. As a young impressionable boy, Gary loomed large in my life.

I'd like to find a good book that covers Gen. Rosecran's career with the Army of the Cumberland, esp. the Battles of Stone's River and Chickamauga. IMO the Eastern Theater and Grant's armies have been written about almost ad nauseum but there's almost nothing in the popular press about the army of the Midlands.

Enjoyed it much and always enjoy listening to Gary. Unfortunately he always spends time criticizing Shelby Foote, which makes him look petty.

Admittedly, I have to agree; although Professor Gallagher's passion for his subject of study is fiery and sharp, and in watching most of his lectures on RU-vid, I find this fire within him admirable and mostly justified when faced with question after lectures that are blatantly wrong, like the myth of tens of thousands of Black Confederate combatants. I personally like Shelby Foote, immensely, and I believe his views are not out of step with Gallagher's, or Ayers, or Davis', Nevins or McPherson. I believe Foote does emphasize the point that over-generalization of historical times and peoples is vastly a mistake in modern scholarship. The issues and motivations of common folks north and south is immensely complex.

I remember my dad reading the Catton centennial trilogy 60 years ago. Catton, too, was my entrance into the most fascinating -- and heartbreaking -- war in our history.
