Gary (or as we knew him Garrett) was our classmate at Manhattan College in the 80s, the stories we have from those days I'll save out of respect for the dead. He was always larger than life and our life was better for having known him... Rest in peace Gary, condolences to his wife and kids.
jaysus you could listen to these lads all night & well done Joe for letting them chat away and not interrupt them. i remember halpin well, multi-talented and played at the highest level, rip.
ALL OF us who were in school in Rockwell College with Gary from 1979 to 1984 met a true friend who was a hero and sometimes superhero to us all but always remained to be just one of us.
Some of my family moved to Ireland from America in the 1980's and my brother Jimmy and Gary became great friends at Rockwell. The first time i met Gary he was walking off the pitch after a game, I asked my brother who the hell is that tree with a man's face? My family became great friends not just with Gary but with his entire family. My family lived in Long Island so many weekends Gary came out for the weekend. I will never forget his first Christmas at Rockwell, he didn't have the money to go back to Ireland so he spent it with us. He was warned by both of my parents not to purchase ANY Christmas presents for us (I have 10 siblings) yet on Christmas morning there were 13 presents under our tree from Gary. Over the years Gary's parents and some of his siblings came to the states and also stayed with us. We got to know Carol and his family. Although a great Rugby Player he was such an amazing person off the pitch.
RIP Gary, competed against you in the hammer at the worlds in Rome in 87, then again in the USA the following year at a collegiate level. Great athlete but will always be fondly remembered for your huge personality. Respects and thoughts with your wife and children. Go well big fella.
Loved Garry. Remember not seen him since primary school. This man mountain shouting across the road at me going down high street. Scared the crap out of me. He really was a lovely guy. I loved the famous try against New Zealand, wasn't so common then.
