GARY MOORE (4 April 1952 - 6 February 2011)
In remembrance to one of my all time guitar heroes, who sadly passed away a year ago today. This remains one of my favourite performances by him and I can still remember buying the original version, written and recorded by Roy Buchanan, when I was still a 15 year old boy and starting out learning to play the guitar.
This performance was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1990 - a venue he revisited a number of times through the years.
Gary, you are sadly missed.

EXACTLY. 👍 BRAVO. 👌 One does not have to like "the Blues"; but you have to acknowledge this guy's genius - if you want to be taken seriously. He was a f***ing *LEGEND*. I will tell all kids: "If you want to be able to seriously talk about music, you have to listen to this song (and guy) like you listen to Bach, Mozart and Queen. (And AC/DC.) All of them geniuses, legends, masters of their craft.

Gary Moore is one of my two favourite guitar players because he is the king of expressing emotions on the guitar. He put everything he had into his playing. Also, he could do it all. Jazz? Check. Jazz Fusion? Check. Blues? Check. Rock? Check. Metal? Check. Write a solo for the Traveling Wilburys in 5 minutes that effing George Harrison didn't feel qualified to write? Check. It's one thing to excel in one style but a completely different thing to be able to go toe to toe with almost any guitarist in any style. He's also the only player I could listen to play 30 minute solos without getting bored. His phrasing was excellent. I don't know any other guitarist who could go into a complete shredfest in the middle of an emotional song without destroying the feeling of it. Truly exceptional player taken from us way too early. And the tone. OMG, the tone. And not only with this special guitar, with any guitar he picked up. edit: oh, and I absolutely love how he always adjusts the volume knob. For ever part he plays he adjusts the volume so it is perfect for what he wants the guitar to say at this point. Absolute mastery

I'm a huge Gary fan and have been since the 70's. The kind of emotion he gets out of this solo, Still Got The Blues, Story Of The Blues, Seperate Ways, etc..comes from one place. Pain. He had to have a hole in his heart deeper & wider than the oceans to make an instrument convey such a powerful message.

When he did this one live he let his whole heart out through the guitar. When words failed him the guitar spoke for him and expressed everything he couldn't do otherwise. He improvised a lot during the live performances. He is greatly missed. This song was the last encore he did the second and last time i saw him live 1990. How many guitarists can manage to just keep on playing with 5 strings?! That's what Gary did when playing a tune he said a string broke "5 string Stumble then!!"

a true master of the art. there are allot of "fast" blues players. i like Stevie Ray Vaughn as much as the next guy, but sometimes when guys like Stevie play fast. it loses some of that blues feeling. to me at least Gary Moore is the only guitarist that can give me goose bumps for the entire duration of the 10 minute performance. the way he flows from play style to play style, but how each note remains soulful and full of emotion. wehter he played rock, blues, or flamenco style. it seemed that any type of guitar wanted to sing to its fullest in his hands. a guitarist like no other.
