This is my version of "Cars" originally by Gary Numan, recreated (a "ReCover" as I call it) completely in Propellerhead's Record. I originally created this in Reason but I've transferred it over to Record so the 80's band I'm in, The Retromaniax, can start playing this one live. Made a huge difference in the sound coming from Reason to Record. This mix sounds slightly different though than what I was monitoring through the UX2, so if things seem a bit off, that may be why - my screen capture software only captures local audio so I couldn't get it to catch what the UX2 was processing. I have a bit more final tweaking to do to this one, but it's essentially complete. Almost all custom patches (I started with a Factory Soundbank Thor patch for the crunchy clav), all original note data (no web download of MIDI files).
I'll be releasing a new refill soon, containing many of the custom made patches I've made over the past 4 or 5 months for the cover tunes we're using for the band I'm in, The Retromaniax. There will be about 90+ patches, pulled from many of these sequenced songs.

Yeah it was a lot of fun, but a lot of work too. Looking back I remember the fun more than the headache and hassle - so yeah, it was worth it! :)

Ed, I've seem you referring to these and the refills on the PUF. This it the first time I've investigated the tracks - they are magnificent! A great great job!!!!

Thanks for the compliments, I worked on this one for a while to get the synth patches just right. I'd like to go back and redo the drum samples some day, as it's just a ReDrum with a single snare sample, so the realism isn't quite there, but it's good enough for what we needed. Yes, beginning at 2:48 is the dual hand part, which I screw up sometimes playing live - it's not hard, but it ain't a piece of cake either.

Yes, definitely post your song and let me hear it. Seems like Gary Numan's "Cars" is a standard in music production classes, I've been asked about it by students at least 4 or 5 times now.

@Welcome2MyPlayground - we've been talking about doing that one for a while, though it was the general consensus of the Retromaniax that the only way we would do it is to pair it up with Huey Lewis' "I Want a New Drug"... singing about ghosts all by itself seemed pretty silly.

@thewakz - yeah that happens a lot with these ReCovers... I create the patches and I think, no, that can't be all there is to it, it just doesn't seem like it would sound right, then I place it in context or the track slowly builds piece by piece, and then... it works. There's something magical about things like that, how it all comes together to simply fuse together. Love it when that happens.

Thx! , that's all the help i need! (sorry for the bad english XD), as you say... i have to learn to create!, i got almost 4 months to do it, so i know how to use Reason and nuendo, I was looking for info about that song, so, you did helped me a lot!. It's all in Reason, and if I remember correctly it's almost all Thor and Subtractor for the synths. There's an NN-XT for the bass guitar patch, and a ReDrum for the drums, Dr. Octo Rex for a tambourine, so there are samples there of course. All the guitars are recordings. So... if I helped you, how would you learn to create a cover song?... it's long hard work, a very long road, but totally worth the journey, you learn soooo much over many years. Just go for it, and post your results.

@Redgrizzled - you know what's really odd is that you're the 3rd or 4th person that has said they're doing this for a course at school. Either you all go to the same school or it's a standard thing across the USA. Anyway, all the sounds are custom patches I made myself.

VERY VERY good you've recorded that to a T as they say. I do covers of G Nmn, Krftwrk & all time classics that I've posted onto my channel here on You Tube so feel free to have a listen. I'm sure you'll like the wrapping I've done on Neon Lights. I have Sonar but I'm to too good at step recording at the moment, I'd love to learn. I've been using keyboards & using Sonar for audio recording. Cheers & please post more stuff.

BTW - this one turned out amazing - no wonder you keep bragging about it, all over cyberspace! It does sound to me like you're tempo is off by about .0013 bpm. Might wanna check that! :)

Sorry for the late reply. It's a sample from the Factory Soundbank called "Clp2_Xtc7", but with quite a bit of processing to make it sound just right. Keep in mind I made this many years ago so the older Reason devices were all I had. First it hits an ECF-42 filter, with no resonance or envelope, just the filter frequency to roll off some high end and boost the midrange . Next, it hits a PH-90 with no LFO (so it's basically "frozen") to do a little more midrange boost - be sure to experiment with the feedback to really emphasize your chosen frequency. Next it goes through an RV7000 hall reverb set at about a 1 second decay. Lastly, it goes through a heavy M-Class compressor, which really gives it that tight and full sound - very high 20:1 ratio with a low -25 dB threshold.

Hey thanks but I don't share the Reason files for 2 reasons (no pun intended): 1) I put a ton of work into these things and I don't give it away, and 2) I don't hold the copyright to the song so I can't sell.

lol, yes, we used to perform this live with an 80's cover band I was in, The Retromaniax. The band has moved on (the guitarist and I left) to other styles, but this was the stuff we did back when we first started. Now they have all live musicians, and as much as I love truly "live" music, nothing beats sequences for true 80's new wave.
