3:10 A very underrated Gary Numan song,a sad but so truly felt lyrics .I always loved this tune which should have been a massive No1. The 1980s was a great decade for music ,the kids of today have missed a lot.
Gary Numan was my savior growing up. This is still one of my go to songs for when I'm feeling down. It's weird but the sadness in this song can take my sadness away. Numan is a genius, an original unlike anyone else then or now. ❤
Sorry to be off topic but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb lost my login password. I would love any tricks you can give me.
@@joytaylor6784 At that time, every LP by Gary Numan was regularly slated in the German magazine "Musik Express". Funny enough, years later the LP "The Pleasure Principle" made it to number 1 in an article in the same newspaper about the most influential electric pop LPs.
IMHO This ain't sad. It is just a relaxed and relaxing quote from worlds most recognised autistic artist. L♾️💚E all in this and his whole output, with very few exceptions. 💚⚠️❤⚠️💚
Isn't it ironic that the very same tabloid and pop press that derided gary when he first started out are the same ones lauding his longevity and prowess today,he's an innovator ahead of the curve and enjoying more popularity than ever.the bowie of synth music.
The first time I ever heard this song it made me cry, and it still can.He spoke to the alienation all of us have felt at one point or another, but particularly the horror that is being a teenager....
what a pioneer this musical magician is. this genius produces music for the decades. no scandals no manufactured crap from some bum. this man is a credit to his trade and has given to the masses quality sounding music for years . we the numanoids salute you Gary. thank God for Gary numan
If I remember correctly Chris Payne or Russell Bell said they had only intended to use the violin in the demo of Complex, but they couldn't the right synth sound to replace it for the completed track so they stuck with the violin. It suits it.
Thank you Gary Numan. As a very young man, worried about leaving childhood and having to become an adult, your music was one of the very very few works of art that made me feel connected and that somehow, there will be a place in the world for me.
Gary Numan is Music and Science when you listen to his music you end up thinking about Astronomy, Geology, Zoology, Botany and all the Circilium of Science
This beautiful song 🎶 always makes me cry.. I love Gary Numan so much, been a fan since 1979, please keep them away” hauntingly beautiful📀📀😢 with luv from Toronto , Canada 🇨🇦 stay safe everyone!! LA 2021
They won't come back You know it's always the same And they're sure to forget Saying everyone lies … So I'm down to this I'm down to walking on air And you're here by my side With all your waving and smiles … Please keep them away Don't let them touch me Please don't let them lie Don't let them see me EPIC AND UNIQUE
Bought 'Replicas' vinyl LP back in the day. (Haven't own a turntable for many years). Recently bought the CD. I had honestly forgotten how good it is. It is a masterpiece.
For a long time (maybe still) this was the chart single with the longest ever musical lead-in before the vocals start (1 minute 28 seconds - nearly half way through the song). I think this was Gary's 3rd (?) chart single, and a brave slower, melancholy choice after his previous Are 'Friends' Electric? and Cars, given that there are arguably more obvious candidates for singles on The Pleasure Principle. A beautiful song.
That's one of things I really loved about Numan, he was never afraid of being seen as vulnerable - it seemed a rarity back then for a rocker to wear his heart on his sleeve, until Morrissey came along and made it de rigueur, that is.
Man alive, how good was/is this song? Evokes amazing memories of my youth. As does so much of his music, along with the likes of Japan, the original Human League etc.
*@Official Gary Numan* When this song was released in 1979, I was an 8-year-old boy who, thanks to everyone from Marvin Gaye, to the Supremes, and George McCrae, through to the Bee Gees, I was a boogie child of that Funk, Motown, & Disco Age. (I still am) In 1979 Funk & Disco were quickly being eclipsed by New Wave & Synthpop, though Point is my knowledge of New Wave & of all-electronic Synthpop is "a smattering of everything & a knowledge of nothing." So I don't know who should get credit for originating all-electronic Synthpop, where even the percussion is also all-electronic, too. The earliest I knew of were Jean-Michel Jarre _(Oxygene Part IV)_ & Vangelis. _(Albedo 0.39, Blade Runner_ soundtrack) Their music is all-electronic alright, but it's purely instrumental. Since there's no lyrics or vocals of any kind, it doesn't qualify as Synthpop, nor as New Wave in that sense, in my opinion You may never read this, but whatever the case, Sir, you are grossly underrated for pioneering all-electronic Synthpop, of the variety having *lyrics.* There's everyone from Boggles, to the Cars, Blondie, the Fixx, & so on. And the only other person performing such a masterful job of harmonizing traditional orchestral instruments (violin, viola, cello) with electronic instruments if Jeff Lynn & E.L.O. Upon discovery of your official RU-vid channel tonight, this may be my only chance of ever getting a message of appreciation through to you, Gary. I can't thank you enough for your unrecognized & underappreciated influence upon all-electronic music. I'm a very conventional musician, in the Motown, Funk, & Disco field. At present I employ very little of electronic instruments in my music. Nonetheless, the impact & influence that _Cars_ & that _Complex_ have on me cannot be overstated. Your music has widened my rhythmic vocabulary; enriching it & my creative originality What a masterpiece of harmonizing traditional orchestral instruments with synthesizers & with electronic percussion _Complex_ is! ! It is just as futuristic in 2020 as it was 41 years ago in 1979. Strangely enough there's nothing nearly as futuristic as your music playing on the radio, even now... Thank You so much, Gary. Best of Success to you! !
@@gerardmurphy6263 Youre right! If anything David Bowie provided a role model for Gary to aspire to. Bowie's _Fame_ is the earliest example of digital sampling & "bending" (bending the pitch of real audio ELECTRONICALLY) that I know of. Ill have to research it to be sure, but I believe thats the historic first of that technological advance It may interest you to know that German-born & lifetime NYC resident Gershon Kingsley was one of the very first people to ever buy a Moog synthesizer, when the very first of those electronic music instruments were ever sold. He is credited with establishing both the Electronic Music catagory, & the Synth-pop style... The grandfather of all-electronic commercial songs (with the exception of his adding acoustic drums) is his 1969 hit _Popcorn._ For the decades that Ive been fascinated by his _Music to Moog By_ album, I never knew! 😳😳
For some reason this video reminds me of the movie Beyond The Black Rainbow. Just like that movie the video is very trippy and icy as the same time. Great tune and very haunting.
I agree and it's like any song. The only way is to keep playing it again until you get fed up and have let the energy go out of your system as with all things. I think I saw an interview with Gary where he said he didn't care for this stuff as he had evolved but I prefer all this early sound. A matter of opinion of course.
@@MrDianadoll Absolutely. I loved 'Are 'friends' electric? ' as a teenager, but it is his recent music that has sparked my creativity and interest. I am slowly working back through his catalogue and just loving all of it.
@@SuperDonnaMO Yes, thanks for the comment. I love all kinds of music and used to focus on the charts as you had a bit of everything but it was my sister that made me love Gary Numan as from the start she was hooked and as a kid I would always hear his albums and stuff. I'm from a very musical household. There's not much I don't like when it comes to music but it's an age thing to as I don't care for a lot of todays stuff but we like what we like. All the best!.
Omg i adore gary numan ,next to are friends electric ,this is my fav song ,great to see orginal line up , RIP Cedric , and Paul died way to young, i saw Gary in concert in the 80s @ hammersmith it was the best time of my life, my only regret was he did i signin @,oxford street a little later but i was scared to meet my idol , i did the same thing with johnny depp i suck
I was 7 years old when this album was released. By the time I was 10 I would have really been into this had I not been born into a backwards podunk town. Thank you Gary for keeping on all these years.
Thank you, Gary. It's nice to see this video. I've loved this track since the old days. One of my favorites in your massive body of work. It touches me to the core.
Memories of working as a reference librarian...wandering through the mall on weekends, then back to the library basement...listening to Gary's greatest hits in my car as I bounced between home and work and the mall and back again. This song, in particular, is so redolent of the summer of 1998 that I can almost smell the books (and the interior of my Toyota after eight hours in the baking sun).
Beautiful, Gary. You can evoke feelings I didn't even know I had, stirring things in parts of me that I turned off years ago to stop the noise of everyone's attention, this place that sways in rapt ecstasy with your music. Thank you so much for being you, and expressing your creativity/life!
This song is an evergreen classic. It is such a deep song, and was way ahead of its time back then, and still sounds so current today. A masterpiece 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I get a magnificent soaring feeling from this song… and the entire album broke barriers!! I’ll never forget the first time Gary Numan played live in SF… even the stage setting was unique!! Gary Numan and DEVO were the forefront of electronically driven New Wave… the last really timeless genre of enjoyable music!! Folk, Pop, Soul, Rock, Funk, Punk, Rap, Ska, Metal, Grunge, Techno, and Hip Hop, couldn’t last without evolving… And now, this original format of New Wave is finding lots of new young protégés… they’re just 100% Digital!!! (IMO… The best thing about New Wave is it completely erased and buried Disco!!!)
Opening Lyrics: THEY won't come back YOU KNOW it's always the same and they're sure to "forget" [sic] Saying everyone lies So I'm down to this I'm down to walking on air, and You're here by my side With alll your waving and smiles...
Haha No we def have not caught up yet , but like Pink Floyd . I think they were both musicians / artists that were gifted these vibrations from other entities / dimensions 💜💜💜
Gary Numan burst onto the music scene back in 1979 with his breakthrough single Are Friends Electric? However The importance and significance of Gary Numan is only just being fully appreciated by the music industry ...
Before TubeWay Army there was nothing. In fairness there ain't been much since that can or will ever compare. These songs you played over in your head as you drifted through the smog filled cities of the early 80s. There were no MP3s or such like. You made time for music you gave it time and with that came an appreciation of it. Today's disposable music fits this time and place. I'd personally go back to those smoggy streets haunted by the music in my head.
My older brother had the 7" of this with a live version of bombers on the B side. Used to play it to death on the record player when he had gone to work aged 10. Opened the door to 80s synth music for me. This track is utter genius
They won't come back You know it's always the same And they're sure to forget Saying "everyone lies" So I'm down to this I'm down to walking on air And you're here by my side With all your waving and smiles Please keep them away Don't let them touch me Please don't let them lie Don't let them see me
I had just got into O Grade, when this single came out. By that time I was already a great fan of Gary, after Down in the Park, Cars, Are friends electric etc...That time the Music scene was so vibrant and varied. I used to listen from New wave, Post punk to Synth Pop/Rock...Music really shaped me as a person and made me ready to face World, after I passed out of A Grade. Thank you Gary for being there with your incredible Music during the crucial part of my youth..🙏👍😊
