I always thought of Gary Numan living in some kind of superstar vacuum, disconnected and above it all. This doc. really shows him as much more human than I ever imagined. Wish I was on the other side of the world seeing his show in MPLS, MN tonight.
When I was about 12 and getting into music properly (which usually means raiding the parents' records) I remember reading the liner notes of a Robert Palmer compilation (featuring a cover of "I Dream Of Wires") in which the late Palmer wrote that Gary Numan was a really lovely guy, but so painfully shy that people often got the wrong impression. As someone who struggles with social awkwardness myself sometimes, I'm chuffed to bits that Gary did find a way around it, came out of his shell and proved Robert Palmer right. :)
Completely understand the hip hop connection ... my first (and very surprising) like of Gary's was when I heard dj fingers of sindecut juggling the intro from films on the old documentary called bad meaning good...... Great track and personally my favourite numan track - the drums are mixed perfectly
Lets get this clear. Early Gary Numan was punky music going into the 80s non-poppy electric phase. Mid 80s going on to mid 90s produced good, but NICE electric music, More like experimental music of which I dont mind. Then into what I would call electric punk (industrial). So I think hes more back in touch with his original roots. If you dont agree I dont mind. Its my thought on it. At least I can pick out an album of different styles depending what mood Im in.
having read all the comments i think some people are rather missing the point.Regardless of musical influences ,isnt it gary numan himself that gives his music the numan sound. After all,he writes it,plays it and sings it dos'nt he?
@Hammersmith80 Oh c'mon, it seems with you that Gary is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't! It's good for an artist to be critical of his work, unlike some fans who embrace everything Gary does. Sure there were a few good moments in the 85-92 period but for the most part, it wasn't great . If he had started his career with The Fury and ended with M&S, he would of forever remained a U.K. act. He has more international presence now then he did in his dicky bow and dancing girl years.
You Tube mothers are at it again, JHC all mighty I can watch a full movie or any History Channel or Discovery on this mother but not a Gary Newman music documentary? WTF?
maybe it's just me but I don't think very many people who used his music have done it justice. His music is to dark for me now, I like the dance album it gets better with age.
Sorry, but "Replicas" "The Pleasure Principle" & "Telekon" are the three great albums. He should give a fuck about what these rock critics say and go on with the electronic sound, more synth less guitar, the new sound is way too heavy
