"Pure" sounds much better than the other two. "My Jesus" is perhaps my favourite track by Gary Numan. I'm very much looking forward to these re-releases.

Pure had a much better production than Exile and, especially, Sacrifice. Numan was helped a lot by Rob Holliday and the UK industrial band Sulpher. Pure is a great great record.

I would like to add something from a fan's perspective. The last track is I Can't Breathe which is the only track that's specifically credits Sulpher as co-writer. And that song is louder and has more dynamic range than the other songs. I think Gary might have already been losing some of the range in his hearing by then, so on the one song that Sulpher really had a hand in, it actually sounds much higher quality. By the time the Jagged came out, he had Fenton for help in that area.

Absolutely phenomenal, I'm almost in disbelief. I always thought these albums had a demo-like sound to them, so I'm glad they are getting some special treatment that they very much deserve. One issue with Exile for me is no matter how far I crank up the volume it just never seems loud enough

I love that album but the awful sound of it drives me insane. His vocals are mixed way too loud and too deep into the low end. I've tried to fix it myself but it's almost impossible

Thanks for this, Vaughn. I will definitely buy the remade "Sacrifice" album. A few years ago I played "Desire" to a friend, and she couldn't make out what he was singing. I can't wait to hear the newly realised version!

Sacrifice and Exile are two of my very favourite Numan albums... probably in my top 3! We haven't heard very much about this project at all, so this is fascinating to hear. Both albums always lacked production, so it will be great to hear them re-done, but I really hope they don't lose that special thing the originals have.

Good video Vaughn. Really looking forward to these new versions. All great albums. Have been a fan since '79 and hung on in there through the "barren" years. Weirdly, for an old time fan, as much as I love the Replicas > Dance era, I think the Sacrifice > Intruder era ( and particularly the last 3 albums) is the stuff I listen to most.

Thanks again for a great update. I am so happy to see the 4 albums modernised to today’s standards. Dead Son Rising was such a leap in production values that to bring these already good albums to that level will make them more listenable & on a par with Splinter, Savage & Intruder. Keep up the great work!

I love those three albums, especially the extended version of Sacrifice and Exile and have a special place in my heart (they are in my top 6 Numan albums). Ade is a great producer and i'm curious about the end results BUT, even thought those three albums sounds a bit "outdated" (especially Sacrifice) they have a great DIY sound a great feel and atmosphere that i really hope will not be lost in the new "reproduction".

Great video Vaughn thoroughly enjoyed it, chuckled at the baritone drone comment. I am delighted Gary is re-releasing these albums. Always loved all his 'dark' material. Especially looking forward to hearing Sacrifice again, all three were brilliant albums. Pure was Numan finest album lyrically in my opinion. A Prayer for the Unborn was genius. Keep up the great work!

@@numannut8539 & @Vaughn George: I had to do something as this video went live, and have only just caught up now. But it's wonderful news, in that the improved recording quality will (hopefully) inspire younger producers/remixers to revisit these albums' material, for extended mixes and interpretations. Gary Numan was - and still is - the master of the daring and mood-challenging four-chord-phrase, as illustrated at 9:15 - 9:22 and at 11:45 - 11:54. This I draw much inspiration from in my approach to MID track compositions and interpretations. Though I prefer 'Strange Charm' as his best work to-date, when I bought the Eagle Records re-release many years ago, the extensive Steve Malins' sleeve notes were fascinating in how much respect Gary was winning from new fans, despite the [this-and-that] being written in the press. His willingness to take on challenges others wouldn't dream of, in the name of getting the absolute most from our very short lives, I respect immensely. So I'm hoping that the material of these 1990's albums will be explored further. (As will I soon with the Ade Fenton videos uploaded prior to this shorter video - and since!)

I went to see Gary at the Palace of Hollywood for their Exile tour. Guess singer to sing down in the park was Marylin Manson.. George, that place was packed. It holds 2000 ppl? honestly, Exile is indeed my fav Gary record. and I use to smoke a joint then listen to the whole cd in its entirety. It's an experience . Btw I remember Gary being fond of the Akai S5000 reading his interview on Future Music

Hey Bro! Absolutely LOVE your coverage of Gary and the excellent way you come across and explain everything 😊 Just now, I can get the 2-LP Clear Vinyl pressing of Pure. It has a release date of 2023. I'm *HOPING* that this is indeed the remix/re-recorded version you are talking about! I did see a 4 year old post on Gary's Facebook page warning at that time that releases on Amazon were NOT the new versions, but by now I sure hope this is the right one. Do you know if Gary after all this time has actually released this officially and this 2023 release is it? I *REALLY* appreciate any input on that because I would LOVE to get these on vinyl if so. Thank you kindly! BTW, I do have the 2000 Let Them Eat Vinyl 2-LP pressing that I've had forever. I sure hope the one I'm buying is the new one 😁

Vaughy, man I am a long-time fan of Numan and to be honest fall into one of the clichéd categories. Namely, I kind of gave up around the infamous 'fallow period' and like many, I truly loathed the likes of Metal Rhythm and Machine and Soul (I still find them 'difficult') but I remember being really down on all things from that period and was hugely skeptical when the rumblings around Pure started and frankly was ready to give up, but a friend who wasn't even much a Numan fan had a copy of Pure and played it for me in the car (ironic) and I was blown away by it. It was new Numan to my ears and I went to my first Numan gig in years on that tour and I was back in the fold. I have a HUGE affection for this Pure specifically because it returned my faith in the great man and his ability to do it again. I will not deny that I genuinely thought he was a spent force and was ready for the scrap heap (prior to it) as did many others BUT I know now I was wrong. I am hugely excited to hear the recorded versions of all three and I can totally see the point of them sounding like demos. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series man and I am working my way through the others as we speak. Loving your stuff dude

What I took from Sacrifice at the time was Gary's fear of where he had been. Its a highly creative piece and process of him emerging and also finding his way out. So those drowning sounds were truly apt for me, I love the album. I sensed his struggle acutely. And the Sacrifice Tour (a Tour he says actually made money for the first time) Then of course his conflating move onto Exile. I am no Tech specialist as yourself but you add a great understanding of the way things were, and for him [seemingly] just had to be done at the time. I appreciate your analysis. I will look forward to the new masters. But, will always cherish those older versions, because I felt such a part of the period. I was a jogger at the time so that album along with Exile were never off my ears. Then on the car stereo.

Hello Vaughn. I couldn't wait to buy the Sacrifice album on it's original release and loved it immensely . It is a definite favourite of mine, so I'm very excited about these 3 albums getting the Ade Fenton treatment. I love the track A question of faith, desire is a favourite as well as scar. To me Exile was sort of Sacrifice polished up but Pure is definitely much more aggressive. I love all three albums and hope when re-released, they're put out on cd and vinyl, maybe a limited edition box set, picture disc's, coloured vinyls etc. I have been a Gary Numan fan since 1986/87 and am still listening every day...Can't wait for this release

I must say when I saw the two interviews with Gary and part two with Gary and ade Fenton I knew you where doing an interview with ade Fenton. When he said about sacrifice exile and pure remixed I am interested and can not wait for them to be released from what you said about my Jesus you where blown away by the A to B and you where blown away I can not wait for them to come out. As I am a Gary numan fan from replicas right through to intruder can not wait for these three to get released.

Jagged is my least fave Numan album from his 40 year catalogue - I even prefer Machine + Soul to it. I find it too samey, and slow tunes in general, and that stop-start-stop-start was way overused.

Sacrifice and Exile Extended those are the original versions, only re-arranging the original parts with probably a few sounds and instruments added, not remixed though. bit like your regular '80s 12inch versions. that said, the new variants will be no remixes in strict terms either but completely new recordings like Vaughn mentioned

I seem to remember Gary saying he recorded Sacrifice in his living room on a portastudio with an SM58 as the mic, that's why it sounds "narrow" and "thin"...

I think this is a great move to re-work Sacrifice, Exile and Pure, in particular with a vinyl release. Jagged will also benefit from a tweak (loved the performance of the album live, but as an album, it does not hit me in the same way). What Gary also needs to do, is to re-press Splinter. The second hand market price of Splinter is USD200-500, which cannot justify, but it is an album I want on Vinyl. The re-recordings alone, mean I can get these albums at a reasonable price, but with the benefit of a much better production. In fact those three albums were great concerts and songs sounded much better live than the recorded album. Im sure if Splinter was re-pressed he could easily sell a couple of thousand, as Vinyl was not as popular, at the time of release, so believe there are many people missing the album from their collection. This would then allow vinyl enthusiasts to own the most important albums on vinyl at a reasonable cost (Tubeway Army - Berserker, then Sacrifice to present). Anything in between can sit on iTunes.

Leave Pure alone. It is one of the best LPs he has ever done and shouldn’t be touched. It would be like going back and redoing I Assassin. Don’t do it Gary! I agree on the other two, but not Pure…

But VG literally said "I don't think they're as bad he (GN) says they are. But anyway, I'm a fanboy..." So he's listened to the albums and is putting them in context... that context being that Numan had lost his way during the 'middle years' and, in making Sacrifice, began to find it again. VG is probably one of the most qualified people to speak about Numan of any era -- I mean, he did a nearly 30 minute long video on just the song, "Berserker." ...which is from the middle period!

When I first heard Sacrifice (and later Exile) I had hoped Gary would "fix" them, they are very flat. I am however, slightly disappointed that they will be re-recordings.

@@VaughnGeorge I had every one of his rereleased CD albums. Can’t believe that people are charging over £50 in some cases. I would prefer to buy them as downloads and put them on a CD-R than pay someone silly money. Seems like a lot of people are buying up the harder to get CDs on Amazon and selling them at a profit. Glad to see Gary re mixing them, as his later albums are mixed and mastered to a higher degree. Even though his latest album seems a bit heavy on the bass on the album version (the CD is better IMO). I’m sure there must be many new Numan fans off the back of his latest albums, wanting those three.. Thanks for sharing the news dude😎

I was considering paying 100 pounds (nearly $140) just to get Berserker and The Fury to complete my collection. Finally found the Numa Years box set for $90 instead... but even that felt like a bit much. Anything originally released on Numa Records is WAY too rare now... even the Cleopatra/Eagle versions are long out of print and ridiculously overpriced. I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) one part of the reason GN is re-recording Sacrifice, Exile, and Pure from scratch is to regain rights over release/distribution, similar to what Taylor Swift is doing w/ old albums.

@@joelakat yeah I used to have the Numa Boxset. I have the whole lot on a hard drive, but nothing like having the original CDs. The only ones I still have the CDs of (not in their original cases),: Pure (two disc version), Jagged (two disc version), Hybrid, Scarred, Live at Shepherds Bush, Hope Bleeds (CD and DVD), Berserker (DVD), Fragment 1/04 and 2/04 (DVDs) and some vinyl along with the Savage and Intruder in multiple editions. On my hard drive I have all the studio releases and lots of other compilations and live albums. I plan to buy back all the available CDs that I can find at normal prices, but for the amount of time I would listen to some of those middle period albums, I can cope with listening to them as AACs. While I can appreciate collectors, I just can’t stomach paying those silly prices. I do bet that my ex has made a mint from my old CD collection lol

@@joelakat as for Numans reasoning, I hate the fact that artists do not own their back catalogue material in all scenarios. I definitely do not begrudge artists trying to make money from older material. Numan has definitely given to his fan base over the years and I do think he deserves the money he makes, I know some disagree.

I'm apprehensive quite frankly. Metallica or somebody remastered justice and if you've spent decades listening to the original, it's pretty impossible to accept a re~working these many years later
