Gary Numan - What's In My Bag? 

I met Gary Numan at a movie theater about 4 years ago. He was very nice and took a photo with me. It was a screening of Hellraiser and I asked him, "Are you excited for Hellraiser?" and he said, "I'm terrified of these films! I don't know why I'm watching this." Such a cool memory and will always appreciate him taking the time to meet a fan!

It's amazing to see someone as legendary as Numan come out the other end of a long career so humble, level headed, and with a seemingly realistic perspective on his role in it all.

His taste in music is, unsurprisingly, amazing. A lot of times artists I like are not people I have a lot in common with in this arena.

Gary is me... all of his bag is my favorites. ULTRA by Depeche Mode was the album that really got me to appreciate music and ever since that came out, Depeche Mode has been my favorite band of all time.

Not only does he pick some great artists, but he picks the best album from each one. And he's disarmingly humble.

What an absolute gent, and what a lovely surprise it was when the man himself appeared on stage at a NIN gig a few years ago. Back in the eighties no one did a light show like the Numan. Fantastic gigs. peace

It is very important that he said he wasn't influenced by Kraftwerk. I think its not only him, but a lot of late 70's british electronic bands weren't although they keep naming Kraftwerk as big influence.

Love Gary Numan. The first time I saw him was in 1980 on SNL (back when they would have edgy bands play)... He was so different and the song "Cars" was great very catchy. Hell over 30yrs ago, wow. Cool to see his picks and the many bands he influenced, like NIN. Rock on GARY!!!

All these years, I had the impression that this guy was a bit of a tool but he seems like the nicest most humble guy you'd ever want to meet. Sorry Gary! More rock stars should follow your lead.

What a pleasant, extremely humble gentleman. GN mildly bashes his music legacy and talent, but he's got plenty to be proud of. Influencing generations of young electronic/Rock musicians is nothing to downplay.

When he showed the Depeche Mode CD, I was like "Yep!" because I'd been strongly reminded of them when I listened to his last 3 albums.

I've seen almost every what's in my bag, and this one is perhaps my very favorite - if not one of them. I just love how personal Gary Numan about his choices, and how much appreciation he shows for every one of the artists he chose - so matter of fact, and so humble in his appreciation - despite the fact that he is a true legend himself. I may even have to agree with him about the NIN thing, even though it's been a while since I listened to them now. Awesome episode.

Gary's always humble about his own contribution to music. So many bands/artists have been inspired by his work including those that have continued to inspire him, such as Manson, Depeche Mode and NIN.

That's what ' I ' was thinking! I guess when you've listened to Ultravox from the beginning yrs.. no other singer could possibly replace the original. I love Midge Ure. The live concert at the Roundhouse is simply stunning. Such feeling from him. Also saw him in interviews and thing he's absolutely refreshing.

Amoeba has to be one of the best music and video stores I've ever been lucky enough to stumble upon even thou I lived near them for years. If you like way off the mainstream music Amoeba's the place to find CD's.

I was flying a microlight over Burton way in 1993 and a Japanese Zero came alongside and waggled its wings. Beautiful in beige with a big red roundel. I gave a timid wave. When I got back to my airfield and told the CFI he said its a Harvard in Zero colours and the owner/pilot is Gary Numan. One of those never forget momments. Thanks for being humble and decent enough to wave.

I saw Gary Numan in London at the Rochester Castle in 1978 for 50p and he was brilliant. I saw him again two years ago in London and would say he was as fresh and inspiring, if not moreso than he was back in the 70s. 70s? Just doesn't sound right....look how he good he looks for the 70s!

Gary Numan is such a humble and down to earth person. His music has been a foundational part of my life, my music taste, and I'm sure inspiration as I get into making my own music.

I love Ultravox! "Dancing with Tears in My Eyes" and "We Stood Still" are my fav Vox songs!!

I remember rummaging through someone's record collection in a university dorm room in 1972 and finding Electric Warrior. Holy crap I was struck. To this day it still does what it did back then. So glad that's one of his picks. What a great guy.

Gary was responsible for my transition to all music electronic when I was 14. In 1979, when Cars first came out and was steadily climbing Casey Kasems Top 40 charts, I had never heard anything like it. That led to Kraftwerk, then Joy Division around the time I became a dj. But Gary was the first. Love seeing him doing so well.

Great to see you on the Tube! I've had your music in my CD rack since before my kids told me, you don't need CD's anymore dad. Well, a lot longer than that. You are up there with Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Edgar Froise, Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Kansas, Duran Duran, The Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, and on and on and on. What I would do to get to Amoeba. As much as Tower Records is good in Ireland, Amoeba looks a thousand times better. When I get to L.A some day, whether it's next year, 2 years or 10 years, one of the first, if not the first place I'm going to is Amoeba.

Gary is very generous in his praise, especially to Depeche Mode, and shows real gratitude. And I like how he mentions his wife, and gives her credit. Seems like a nice bloke.
