I seen Gary The Glove Payton Play. Outstanding defensive pg who was fearless. Defensive intensity. Also a great scorer too. Played a ton of mins and never wavered. People forget played in the western conference where pg were aggressive scorers. Gary, Tim Hardaway, Kevin Johnson, nick van excel, a young Marbury, Then he faced the east coast Isaiah Thomas, Mark Price, Sam Cassell, young Gilbert A, too.
He's so right, I remember back to back to back games 20 years ago. Those players rarely got injured all the time. How many games did Jordan, Dr. J, Barkley, Malone Carl or Moses miss because if injury? Bird used to lay down in front of the bench when he sat for years because of his back. Garbage players today make more than those HoFers did back then. These guys play the game like they are at the country club playing tennis.
To piggyback on what Gary was saying about analytics, the people who go on analytics don't understand that everything you do in basketball is a reaction to what someone else on the floor is doing.
I always hold what actual players say to a higher regard than analyst BUT he was wrong though. Analytics isn’t Everything But you can definitely tell a lot from a box score! And people like Tony Snell aren’t even getting 30mil contracts let alone 80mil.
You can definitely miss a lot of great things that happened on the court looking at a box score... it's not a true barometer of impact on a basketball game so it can't be looked at as reliable. Can go 3-17 from the field with 10 points but if you don't turn it over, box out every play, the ball doesn't stick when it gets to you, communicate with your teammates well on the floor and play great team and/or individual defense.... those things are way more critical than stats when it comes to team success that will never show up in a box score!
