(7 Dec 2017) The son of Francis Gary Powers, the American spy pilot whose 1960 shootdown over the Soviet Union sparked tensions between Moscow and Washington, has visited a Russian museum containing artifacts of the incident.
Gary Powers Jr. on Thursday viewed a fragment of his father's U2 plane and the mission's flight plan, on display at a military technological museum near Yekaterinburg.
"It is now history. We can reflect on it and learn from it," said Powers, who founded the Cold War Museum in Warrenton, Virginia.
The elder Powers parachuted from his plane when it was hit by a Soviet missile about 1400 kilometers (870 miles) east of Moscow.
He was imprisoned and exchanged in 1962 for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel.

Question: What are "artefacts "
@onee
@onee 2 года назад
artefact /ˈɑːtɪfakt/ noun plural noun: artefacts 1. an object made by a human being, typically one of cultural or historical interest. "gold and silver artefacts" 2. something observed in a scientific investigation or experiment that is not naturally present but occurs as a result of the preparative or investigative procedure. "the curvature of the surface is an artefact of the wide-angle view"

@@starguard4122 Both spellings are etymologically justifiable, and both are hundreds of years old in English. The British preference for artefact is a new development. The two forms vied for ascendancy in British writing through much of the 20th century until artefact finally gained the upper hand around 1990.

@@starguard4122 As pointed out, "artefact" won in British usage. In American usage, "artifact" is proper. The differences between British English and American English are even wider than the Atlantic. It's not "your bad," it's just one of many oddities of linguistics.

@@kebabremover6024 The NSA issued a report that the CIA believed that claimed Powers deliberately allowed the Soviets to get him. They claimed he flied lower on purpose. He was also criticized for not committing suicide with the poison they gave him for that purpose. Also, he failed to self-destruct the plane. There is no evidence that the helicopter accident was set up (it's an unproven conspiracy theory) but to Power's credit, he avoided crashing into children playing, and that probably cost him his life when he crashed. A mechanic had changed his fuel gauge without informing him causing him not to know he was out of gas.

No evidence of that. In fact after an investigation, they determined (officially) that he did nothing wrong (except perhaps working for the CIA and spying on Russia for US imperialism!).
