No parent says " Go to school for debt". All parents want is for their child to establish their independence and financial security. You can achieve success without a degree 100%, but from my experience, it is that much harder without a degree of some sort.

So many people are not really understanding the message from Gary and Arod. You need to know yourself more than anything. College isn’t for everyone, and neither is entrepreneurship. You need to know what you’re good at, or go find out what you’re good at. Some people in college might be better suited for a trade job, and will be better off in the long run being a welder. Some people in trades might be better at an office job, as an IT specialist. One requires a degree, one doesn’t, but you need to know what you’re good at, or what you like and how you can get to that job.

gary vee is full of shit. so am i except if you pay me i will cut the shit... gary wont. he will shit you until your broke. i have other plans in mind then scaling this information. anyways point is if you pay me some big dough i will teach you how to become gary vee starting with absolutely 0$ and making about $200-$500 your first month then the sky's the limit from there. all of the gurus I MEAN ALL OF THEM ... thjey are all just keeping 1 core secret from you. google has made it extremely unprofitable to giver it away and it actually feels like your giving away all hope left at a successful career when you give it away. thats why nobody does. but i have many times and regret every one of them. but if you paid i would do it again. tbh it should have been obvious. look at the tens of thousands perhaps hundreds of thousands of websites and sellers there are out there that sell all this stuff... likes, comments, retweets, shares, reactions, poll votes, live stream views, connections, you name it its out there being sold by who though? how are they able to produce such massive quantities and who are they? always nameless and always faceless. how come there are all these sellers who sell millions of subs but nolt a single one has a youtube channel with 100k subs??? hmmmm? WAKE UP NOW!!! learn how they are doing that shit. become one of them. then you will be way closer to your goal then you ever will otherwise not even if you keep making Gary vee rich forever and shovel that toxic nonsense into your brain every day.

As someone who’s 34 and only went to college because my parents and society told me it’s what I should do, don’t do it because of that. I started college at 16 and had no clue what I wanted in life. College ended up just being a waste of both time and money because it wasn’t for me and I did it for other people or because I didn’t want to be judged negatively. Live for you not for others.

My wife tried the whole college thing. Tried nursing and psychology, not because she wanted those careers but because she needed to pick something. She only ever wanted to be a hair stylist but didn’t think that job was something to be proud of and felt she needed to go to college. Finally done with the desperation, she decided to go to hair school and now makes bank as one of the best stylists in town and absolutely loves what she does. If I’ve learned anything, there is nothing inherently superior about going to college. If what you strive for requires college education then go for it, if it doesn’t don’t go. It's amazing how badly people comprehend Gary. His VERY FIRST statement is SELF-AWARENESS! Bottom line is, you have to know what your goals there and how to get there. I've dropped out of like 3 colleges, barely have freshman credits but I am self-taught and have a great job. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Know your goals. Map out a plan to get there and don't be afraid to start from the bottom - if you believe in yourself. It's not complicated.

job job job isnt the friggin point to work for yourself? if you work for a paycheck it dont matter how big it is for us entrepreneurs heavily invested its billionaire or bust. ANYBODY can talk there way into a good job just put in enough time and get enough certs and get your linkedin game right with mad endorsements i mean eventually you will get a job and if you can do it then great but i dont want a job i want what is already owed to me and every second that goes by where im not know worldwide for my accomplishments is a second that this planet suffers at the hands of google its captor. i dont make much with my business quite yet but i am the boss at least. i feel if i had partners to follow my instructions i could make us all rich because one man against the system is so hard to succeed im finding. the system starts to oppress you the closer you get to your goal. depending on how much google hates you will determine just how much painful shit you gotta endure before even gaining an inch of progress. it seems impregnable. it may be. im going to find out what happens in the deep, dark, then light, the dark again then a large deep section followed by a darker section, that goes even deeper than that.... deep, dark google web.

i think this example is a clear one though, which isn’t the case for everyone. you are essentially a lawyer. your degree will pay well ie engineering, and has good prospects. and your MBA on top of that. yes. everyone will make money back if they invest it like that, but consider it with the depth it really has and not the binary that is the path you chose. what if i want to major in communications? or art? is it worth it then? what if i am at a worse school than you? what if i physically just can’t stand college? how would i go about doing this lots of education + degree = good job. like you obviously. but some don’t want to be lawyers or engineers, and thus the path and ROI of college is very different. for someone like you, i’m sure it was well returned. just something to consider, which is why there is no right or wrong definitive answer on whether to go or not.

This is a good talk! Self awareness is everything. I quit school my junior year of college to go into acting full time BUT I'm thirsty for knowledge! I never was into kegs and parties, so I didn't need to take on 4 years of college debt ( or 6 or 8 with grad school etc) . I had some scholarships to help but had several student loans as well. My first Broadway tour I was blessed to have the money to double down and pay off the 2 and a half years of student loans that I had. Some need the discipline, some don't. I've been a loner for so long I guess people's opinions didn't matter, In my personal choices I do what I want, say what I want, live how I want. But in public I'm quite cleancut, I don't care what people say, EXCEPT, that I was raise in the south, so I'm overly polite in public at times. Years of living in New York has only changed that by a small percentage. Getting stronger in not caring what people think about my opinions is a big deal. in the south youre encourage to fit in, in African families your also encouraged to follow tradition. But I break tradition in everyway. I can't wait to hear Gary's opinions on the Elite college scandal that just started. I'm now working on my happiness as I work on upping my social media game just hired a new editor so my youtube game will increase and I'll have time to write my blogs and put out more meaningful content! College is just a credential. A person with drive, intelligence, and a true thirst for success is going to succeed regardless. What the credential does is get you past educational discrimination in order to actually prove yourself in your chosen field.
@jamesharding3459
@jamesharding3459 2 года назад
Without that credential, you inherently cannot enter a great many fields. Engineering, for instance. I defy you to find a self-taught “engineer” who’s passed the exam to become a professional engineer.
@rg4517rg
@rg4517rg 2 года назад
,@@jamesharding3459 You're talking about .5% of degrees here. An Engineering degree is more of an asset than a liability, college degree-wise. However, you cannot compare it to a Social Work or a fuckin Acting/Performing Arts degree and going $80k into debt for that useless piece of paper. A degree says nothing but a person's tenacity, determination, and hunger tell you they care way more about their career.
@jamesharding3459
@jamesharding3459 2 года назад
@@rg4517rg Some quick math from Oregon State University (because that's what I have numbers for right now) shows engineering students make up a sizeable 24% of the student body and 21% of graduating degrees. Arts majors make up a bit shy of 9% of graduating degrees. Now, as for tenacity, that's fairly easy to assess from some degrees. I'm an engineering major. That means 16 hour days, 7 days a week. 18 and 20 hour days are normal during busy weeks. @@jamesharding3459 I was agreeing with you on Engineering but the same cannot be said about several other majors. Of course, putting in over 70 hours into your Engineering degree, and getting experience on top of that will likely lead to a great career/return on investment. Common sense starts to diminish once you acquire $65,000 for a bachelor's(+$35,000 for Grad school) in student loan debt for a Psychology degree but then you cannot find a job and now must work somewhere you dislike to pay off debt on a paper you're not going to use.

@@rg4517rg Median first-year salary for a psych major is $60,000 in the US. Try again. Some quick research would indicate that most science or medicine adjacent fields -- the overwhelming majority of college majors -- make, on average, about $12,000 more than the median annual income in the US _in their first year._ Obviously, arts majors are not as marketable as an engineering major. But there is a lot of grey area between those two extremes.

I was 7 subjects short but blew it off to chase my dreams . My dreams didn’t work out and i worked in many a bar , wasting time and I was crazy unhappy .. finishing those 7 subjects would have given me something to fall back on . Also , I just didn’t have all that much going on back then , it’s one of my biggest regrets . I just hope that kids don’t buy into this entrepreneur thing too much . Even Gary just staid it - shits mega hard . Would getting a degree be that bad ? Even if you don’t use it at first , at least it’s there . I also agree with Gary in that you just can't take on unlimited debt to pay for it. Getting a job is more so about making money in that your business model is you. Now you can just spend more money than you can ever possibly make and say that was a good decision. Having said that there are lots of colleges you can go to on the cheap and yes if your parents are willing to pay for it then take classes that way. However if you have the idea and the know-how to make money and just go out there and do it already.

Too many people that have no business being entrepreneurs are going into entrepreneurship because they see the success of others. Instead, they should be focusing on what they are passionate about. And just work hard, stay late, Google solutions to your low level problems and simply gain experience. Experience is valuable and underrated by young people, that's what companies and managers want. Running your own company is almost certain to fail, almost no one has the capability to create a profit making company. Just work hard and add value and you will progress, these get rich quick schemes by these snake oil salesmen are purely to make them money, not to make you money.

What?!? That's the problem. You are paying $40,000 per year× 4 years to have fun and play around with people your own age to get the experience of college, just to say you had been around other people your own age. This is why the rich stay Rich and the poor and middle class are playing around doing nothing productive with their time. College is nothing but a big debt.

Gary looks at it from all perspectives. There IS no narrow thinking with him. He actually taught me to be more humble with job & money
@theebenmeyer
@theebenmeyer 5 лет назад
The end has a lot to do with the beginning for me. "...I'm thinking second-time Entrepreneurs." But, in order to be a second-time entrepreneur you need self awareness. In light of everything else Gary said, in my opinion this epitomizes the saying, "When life knocks you down, you either get back up, brush the dirt off and get going. Or, you stay down." When we're in the dumps, we have two choices: face our pain, learn from it and our experience, analyze and reflect on it as well as our circumstances and how we got there, all in to adapt, change and use our new-and-improved approach for our interpersonal and professional benefit. The other option: take on shame, resent, bitterness, unhappiness, depression, self-doubt, etc. etc. etc. Self awareness is what gets us through the failures in order to overcome all of the negative latter described above and experience the former positives stated above. This is all my personal experience, as I saved $42,000 working a "job," left, started my own business, and now have $35,000 in credit card debt because I didn't have parents or resources to invest in the equipment, software and other means to run the business. I had to do it all on my own. I'm in a terrible spot now. The business was profitable, but it was a failure in that I couldn't live off the income, and the debt was too high and the time requires wasn't efficient to allow working all the odd jobs, side hustles and humiliating opportunities to make money while growing it any longer. I'm now faced with the humility of looking for jobs in the workforce going to work for someone else. I have to "eat shit" again now in the short term in order to prepare myself for the next "at bat" for an innovative idea I have in fitness or sales that I plan to begin working toward a patent on once I find a job. "If only" I knew a partner in the fitness community with access to equipment manufacturing." Knowing you're not a failure. Knowing what you would do differently. Knowing you had more courage than those who may look down on you but aren't living a life worth telling a story about... that's the self awareness that bestows a level of confidence and pride (and humility to keep ego at bay in the face of that confidence and pride) in order to allow you, I believe, to pick yourself up, scrape the dirt off, and build again. I say don't compare yourself as one of the 99.9% of entrepreneurs that fail to the .01% that have made it. I say compare yourself to the 99% of people who, as Gary says, got out of college, got a job, and see the lie of using their income to continue to upgrade to junk like the new iPhone Xs that Apple arrogantly charges $1000 for. (For the first time, I still haven't upgraded since the iPhone 6s plus because it still works and gets the job done.) What also keeps me going is something I heard that is a motivator successful people who have build a business understand and that others don't: "You don't start a business out of greed or the pursuit of money. You do it for the pursuit of freedom."

I graduated from college in the last 12 months and I highly recommend that most young people don't go to college. The only instances when I think it is worthwhile is when someone has a specific career that requires that (ie being a physician, a nurse, an architect, a lawyer, etc). Let's take a look at how some Scandinavian countries encourage their younger people - to explore and discover themselves first then come back to school if that's the right fit for them. Here in the United States, unless school isn't expensive, I believe it is often not worth the mental, financial, and life impact price.

I had to temper the expectations... if you aren't ready to take on .. at least in nyu's case anywhere between 120-220-k worth of debt (yeah 4 years plus dorms)... i would tell them bye... go to a junior college, don't take on that financial burden...but if you got your issh together, going to law school or business school. then proceed cautiously be smart but go for it.. If you are going to school for "liberal arts" "social work" anything like that that you are going to punch in a clock 9-5 or longer?? DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY.. all of these colleges are the same... the name is all you are paying for.. be smart.. limit your liabilities... go study real estate, go open an online business.. its not worth it.. College is not for everyone and neither is the financial trap that comes with it.. In no other walk of life will you ever be told... hey start in the negative.. and then work your way out of it with zero guarantees. You've got to know who you are, stop looking at your instagram posts, stop living in the digital lie.. wake up find your passion, and only do that.. whether it makes you money or not.. You cannot be studying to be a biologist when your passion is teaching... DO WHAT YOU LOVE, and fight against peoples expectations of you... only live for you.. hardest thing you will ever learn in your life... ignore the family.. don't do shit they want you to do, you are going to be miserable regardless of the money you make.. Money is only a tool.. your happiness is a choice.. Life isn't 9-5 , house, marriage, kids, a couple cars... UNLESS that is the life you desire... Be bold be unafraid, don't be afraid to fail!!!

I tried college at 19, but was still into the girls and staying fresh, had no idea what I wanted to be got into the carpenter trade at 23 and been in the union over a decade. Making great money and no college debt. My advice pick a trade, stick to it and take it anywhere and everywhere

He said he looks at the end and works his way back. I like to think he was internally referencing his ability to create nothing after achieving everything. Its like when you have the solution and need to backtrack to the beginning. Taking skills like these and applying them to the internet which is an outlet to most of the modernized world, is how he grew. And with these skills and shark mindset he could see the basic frameworks for a successful business. Sorry if i missreferenced and created a lesson out of nothing, i just recalled from memory.

i think there is a point where some students take in too much school...and there is a nice percentage of unnecessary credits they take, just to fulfill a standard for you to take the next class. If you can take in all that debt and enjoy going to class, all power to you. But by the time you’re getting close to obtaining your associates degree, these students should mature enough to start their careers, even if you start from the bottom at a front desk in a medical office. You got to start getting your feet in and take interest in your upcoming career, get hands on learning experience about work procedures, protocols, terminology, got to start making a living. My sister is ridiculously smart, book smart though, she is a fulltime medical student here in Miami yet she is working part time at NY Company, the retail women store. I tell her all the time, it’s time to dive into the career. Dont wait until you got a bachelors and you owe about as much as you would put on a downpayment of a 4/4 house, do it now. Stand out and let others recognize your work.

The biggest takeaway for me what the idea that entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. I see a lot of people look at entrepreneurship as a means of getting rich but that doesn’t mean you can’t gain great financial security AND THEN SOME through the normal role of employment.
