A couple of days in the life of a plumber In todays video I take out an old non condensing gas boiler and replace it with a Baxi 800, I also upgrade the radiators on this job As always, thanks for all the support
Hi Tim quick question, I wanna change 5 trv’s around my house . I have a combi boiler. Would I need to drain the whole system or would I need to do a quick change with pulling a vacuum and not drain the system Whats best?
It honestly depends how confident you are, I have done it both ways, generally I will just knock the pressure off the system and swap them out, if there are cream carpets and it's easy to drain it might be as quick to do this
Tom never have i seen that core trick before , legend m8 that’s a neat trick that is , I’m that impressed im tempted to go out to garage to try jam up my cores just to try it
I've always done them like that, I leave the extension piece on mine all the time and just change the core, give the extension a good tap and it comes off very easily, thanks for watching as always 👍
@@PlumbLikeTom funny enough a few weeks back was discussing ways to unstick them over on one of cp’s vids I’ll have find it share the knowledge, no more messing with copper grease
I don't work as hard as I used too, I used to work every Saturday and most Sundays, I still don't have holidays but you can't have everything, thanks for watching as always mate
That gas bottle flame seems a bit yellow, must have got a bit of flux doon the hole. I must admit you won't need to have water in that radiator to get it hot, i think that flame was right up its khyber when you were soldering that coupler with the water in the pipe, that will warm it up
The end of my gas lamp always seems to come loose so it tends to burn a bit yellow, they don't seem to last 5 minutes anymore, thanks for the support mate, it is greatly appreciated
You will need to measure the width and the height of the radiator and see whether it's a single or double panel, if it's very old it will likely be imperial so it might not correspond to modern sizes, if this is the case you will either need to alter the pipes, or fit the closest size down and fit extension tails on the radiator valves
Do I need to calculate the btu Tom? It not a of rad, but it needs changing so I’m tryna do most of the plumbing work in my house to prepare myself for my nvq level 2
It wouldn't be a bad idea to check, you could also future proof it by going slightly larger so it can run at a flow temperature of 55, when you calculate the output you should be able to input what flow temperature you want, older systems would normally run at 80 where as nowadays we try and run at 55 so larger radiators are often required
I certainly do, I actually prefer doing jobs like these, it's nice to feel appreciated and actually make a difference to someones life, don't get me wrong, high end bathrooms are nice to fit, but they don't change someones life, thanks for watching as always 👍
Thanks for the support as always mate, youtube said the subscribe animation was supposed to be working, hopefully it will help smaller channels to gain subs and likes if a fancy animation happens, have a great weekend mate 👍
I just have a cheap core drill, I can't remember the brand but it does the job, I actually just used my makita sds on this one, I use rothenburger core bits, thanks for watching 👍
Nice work Tom. You manage to get so much done in a day. I seem to get slowed down by customers endlessly talking to me, repeatedly asking if they can help and generally getting in the way. You could have grouted those tiles while you were there!
Thanks for the support as always Martin, the first day was a long one on this, I do get customers talking to me quite a lot, I honestly don't mind but it can slow you down a bit
A very interesting and watchable video, thanks. Interesting radiators - they look pretty neat, but performance questionable! No sign of Like / subscribe captions 😟
Thanks for the support as always mate, I'm not sure if the animations are working yet, youtube sent me a email saying they should be but obviously there are some issues
I haven't tried that one, whatever works I guess, just don't ask an apprentice to PTFE tape them as they will probably use the liquid stuff, thanks for the support as always mate
Hi Tom, another fantastic film there thank you. I really enjoyed watching this one, plenty of copper pipe and solder. Hope all went well and it was all up and running for the customer. Sorry I’m late watching the film tonight, had a call out to do. Have a great weekend and take care. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the support as always Chris, hopefully your call out went well, the customer was really happy with this one, it's always nice to get peoples heating and hot water back on, it really is the best part of the job, have a great weekend mate
@@PlumbLikeTomGlad you got the heating and hot water back on for your customer. I got everything sorted on the call out, it was a late finish and for a friend so I didn’t make any wages, but the job got sorted. Take care Tom. 🍻👍👍
I'm sure there's another side to the story to the one I was told, I think it might have been because it was fitted so close to the floor, I was just asked to quote for a new boiler and sort tge system out, thanks for watching as always mate 👍
Those Baxi solo 2 are absolutely bulletproof!!! I’m a plumber and homeowner and I still have a baxi solo 2 50pf in my house. Never gave me a ounce of trouble. Not many parts in the boiler to go wrong to be fair. 😂😂
I think a lot of the problem on this job was the system itself, according to the customer the old rads weren't really giving out any heat, thanks for the support as always Dave
Brilliant work Tom it’s great to see there’s someone like you out there willing to do the work for the older people and a special if one of them has passed away and they are on their own they intend to let things slide. But we all be like this one day,and the national company is all they’re interested in is getting the money and not the job in an out fast . Very good work, Tom and watch some short bits😂👍👍👍👍👍👍 have a nice weekend
Thanks for the support as always mate, like you say we all might find ourselves in that position one day, I always do my best to look after everyone, it costs nothing to care
The reason for the boiler being so close to the floor might have been for speed. Our council when smokeless zones came in had to get rid of coal fired heating quickly and swap to gas. Houses were ok airing cupboards were upstairs.... . Fastest way in flats and bungalows was to put the boilers near the floor so the gravity hot water systems still worked . ( Cylinders were halfway up the airing cupboards ) meant you could do umpteen houses a day with minimum disruption you didn't even need to drain their hot water down this was in 1985 last year of my apprenticeship 👍( i feel so old!) maybe its a throwback to summat like that ? . Excellent job btw . Looks great .
You could well be right, there is normally a good reason for everything. The councils around me are now ripping out the gas and fitting heat pumps, it will likely be the they are being put in as cheap as possible, the council get the grant money and leave the poor tenant with a poorly designed heat pump install
Same here in Newark mate; council ripping all the good old Worcester Heatslave oil combi’s out and “chucking” heat pumps in; usually pensioners to in the rural council bungalows.
Thanks for the support as always mate, at least everything was nice and easy to get too on this job, I was on a new build estate changing a faulty 2 port on Friday and it was a nightmare
