Controlled burning of unwanted natural gas during oil and gas recovery is a commonplace procedure in the energy industry but it is both wasteful and damaging to the environment. Reporting from Houston, Texas, the FT’s Justin Jacobs discovers that moves are now being made to curb flaring, but how effective will they be?

I literally don't understand how no one has thought of taking that gas and converting it into electricity!!!

Right. Oil boils at 300degrees. Can probably get electricity at 100 or so degrees in little generator for electric vehicle. Lot of things don't make obvious sense.

There has to be a way to reign in all that pollution. There should be a way to capture any flarings

In Iran a project named "AMAK" was executed to collect the flare gasses and re-inject them into the oil wells to increase the well pressure and oil production. There are a lot of ways that the flare gasses can be used for example at least they can be used to burn garbage in incenerators in big trash dumps instead of burying them.
@souvikdeb2523
@souvikdeb2523 2 года назад
Good initiative. But incineration of wastes can also lead to greenhouse gas production, right?
@faridjafari6356
@faridjafari6356 2 года назад
@@souvikdeb2523 Yes surely but it is much better than releasing the methane gas directly into the air when you have no other use for it and by this way as I said "at least" you will solve part of your garbage problem. Of course if economic and sustainable uses are found for the gas, it should be used there.

@YDNPower
@YDNPower Год назад
@@VLEET7 Good idea. and many people are doing this. They use flare gas as fuel of natural gas generator for bitcoin mining. this is I think up to now one of the most cost-effective way for bitcoin mining because this kind of fuel is almost free and this makes the electricity cost low to almost zero compared to other sources of electricity.

So if they didn't burn it, it would be released directly to atmosphere. You can't see it, so easy to do on the quiet. 30x more of a greenhouse gas driver than flaring it! A flaring ban could backfire badly!

With natural gas prices at historic highs, gas flaring is an extraordinary waste of money in addition to its negative impacts on climate change and human health. Bringing this gas to market could offer relief to very tight gas markets and, in many cases, could do so faster and cheaper than investing in new supply.

How is it the FT is now interested in Polution or is it the waste of profit? They're striking a new path perhaps? I've enjoyed their vox pop editorials recently, It's almost like theiy're reading real life than the markets, I laud them for it though, A profit can't be made without a planet we can live on and consumers can't consume if theiy're dead. It won't put the willies up a politician, banker or petro magnate, this is about hopeful shame. But, I stand with their sentiment, it's all far too late.

if they store the gas they have a higher supply when demand is low . it cost money to store the gas when supply is high they dont sell at a lower cost to consumers

The problem with converting this gas to electricity is the high cost of building out the infrastructure to feed it back to the grid. Bitcoin mining fixes this. No infrastructure needed, simply build a portable onsite generator to convert to electricity to power mining, then convert the bitcoin mined into fiat currency for a profit. Problem solved. It's the politics that needs fixing, not the planet.

This is a discussting waste of reasources and is unexeptable as it pollutes for no reasons so it is good this problem is being tackled but ti should be something done in stages. It needs to be done now as we know they have the money to do it now and if they don't let the government help get the job done and they can pay the government back ASAP. Who cares about private or federal. The envirnemnt (espieiclly now) needs to take presidence over preoples interest, plus what are private compnaies going to say no to making more money off sold gas!!! I hope all flaring is non existant by 2030!!!!
