Gas-Powered Hand Drill [DiRestoration]

Hand Tool Rescue

Jimmy Diresta sent me this tiny gas-powered hand drill made by Ohlsson and Rice for restoration. It was originally used to tap maple trees for syrup and was called the Drillgine. I believe it's from the 60s or 70s.
I decided that I didn't want to do an "as new" restoration and wanted to make the drill look like it was one of his tools that he painted white and used every day.
The drill needed its points cleaned, a new carburetor diaphragm, and a new recoil assembly.
The small 22 cc (video says 2cc) engine produces 0.85HP. The carburetor design, in my opinion, is horrible, as the small carburetor parts have a tendency to move around under the diaphragm, causing damage. I believe one of these parts is damaged beyond repair and a new carburetor is VERY difficult to find. Until I find and replace the carburetor, the drill currently runs with less power and for short periods of time. Mucho sadness.
From what I have read, this is a common problem, and part of the reason these tools were never successful.
I thank Jimmy immensely for sending me this super cool and unique tool. I really appreciate it. I plan on returning the favour...
If someone has the parts I need, I would gladly purchase them off you.

I want to thank you so much for providing such excellent content. My RU-vid algorithm suggested this channel to me and boy was it dead on! No annoying music, no commentary, subtle humor and therapeutic disassembly and reassembly of vintage and antique tools. Doesn't get any better than that, honestly.

Wow. Where did we lose our way and go from being Producers of amazing tools like this to being Buyers of whatever passes for a Tool nowadays? 60s or 70s, I was a teen in the 70s. Everything did seem a lot more 'metallic and durable' back in those days. Thanks for doing these videos, Doc. You add years to the life of everyone who views and appreciates what you are doing.

It's a nice restoration but it's easy to see why this concept didn't catch on: it can't be used in a confined space due to CO and the vibrations prevent it from drilling concentric circles (look at the runout when he drills a test piece).

Great job! You def *"DIRESTA'ed"* it. For all the people asking, "Why didn't you leave it yellow?" Jimmy paints all his tools white. This is Jimmy's drill, so it's painted white. (That should explain the *"DIRESTA"* too.)

Nice one. But how come you stopped disassembling everything? No piston/con-rod/crankshaft/head/exhaust/intake cleaning? And that chuck needs something.. is a little wobbly. The arbor is bent, or the jaws are misaligned, or something. And no inspection on the gearbox.. must have some gritty shmoo in there.
@HandToolRescue
@HandToolRescue 7 лет назад
This one was more of a quick job, just to get it running. I didn't want to open up the gearbox as I wasn't confident I wouldn't damage the gasket doing that, and they are hard to find! I really want to open it though...

I am sure I have seen this engine in other applications, mainly model aircraft. That aside.. If you ever get the chance to play with hydraulically driven drills and chainsaws, "do it". I once got to play with a well equipped "SEE" (A U.S. Military version of the UNIMOG 406) , and the chainsaw was a beast. Even with a dull chain it would rip through mesquite like nothing. Just make sure they don't leak. Some of them run at absurd pressures, and will sever digits.

Howdy.At 4:08 the caption reads 1000 grit.From the dark colour of the grit,it is possible that is emery.I was taught years ago,in no uncertain terms,never ever use emery on points under any circumstances, it is an electrical conductor,and once embedded,is very difficult to remove.You might want to remove the points and clean them up with a nonconducting abrasive.Clean flat points that are parallel to each other make quite a difference. Good luck with the carbeurator. I remember many frustrating hours with those little things.

Hey, at our school in washington we have an old 1960's Toro Sportlawn Reel Mower 22 inch. I did all that I could and accidentally broke the clutch (it was broken anyway and I really just finished off the crack). I did some makeshift repair and fixed what I could, and the clutch is hard to replace. I managed to "repair" it because it works a bit more than none at all. If I was able to weld I could have fixed it easily. The engine sparks (I should know, I shocked my hand several times trying to get it to start >~

I probably don’t remember correct, but I thought the points were .10, the coil timing was .20 and the plug was .30. I saw you set the timing at .10. Is this older motor different?

I have one of these, it is quite a fun little drill. Why did you not put the front bar back on?

Take the chuck off and press it apart. Use a hex bit in an impact.

Great video. I dig the white. I have a yellow one with original case. It runs on starter fluid buy my diaphragm is toast. Where can I get one or would you sell a few? I need two. One for my drill, 9ne for my amp champ generator
