In this second of a three-video series, the physical exam portion of a patient History & Physical is demonstrated by Mark Pepin, PhD, an MD-PhD student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Although imperfect, this video portrays a targeted physical exam based on the patients gastrointestinal complaint. Enjoy, and please respond below with comments, questions, and/or suggestions. Thank you!

this is interesting - why did you go along the abdominal aorta during auscultation, rather than the four-quadrant method?

I believe this demonstration shows a 4-quadrant method for auscultation, though you will hear many clinicians claim that “bowel sounds in one quadrant are audible in all of them.”

would hyperactive bowel sounds be common if the patient didn’t present with diarrhea? i don’t recall the patient mentioning that symptom
