In the early 2000's Gatecrasher in Sheffield England emerged and one of the most influential nightclubs in the world. At the centre of dance floor were the "Crasher Kids" lead by UV Lee. We hear from Simon Raine the man behind Gatecrasher and from the Crasher Kids themselves. Where you there??

Yep they were OK. Have a feeling the rave scene in the late 80s were better. But I couldn't do that, was still at school then

I loved that scene. Gatecrasher, Passion, Godskitchen, all had the “crasher kid” culture. It was epic, what a time to be alive. Nothing but pure love and respect for each other. No judging, no trouble, just people being brought together for the love of trance music. It was beautiful!

I remember these days well and also speaking with Lee many years ago in Crasher. We'd drive up to crasher from Portsmouth, get battered, Insomniacs after & this is whete things used to get a little odd. No idea how I managed to get my friends home safely, but I did, every time. Someone was definitely looking out for me as not everyone was a lucky as me.

@jlee4545 I haven't done that stuff for years either, I used to like it when out drinking and stuff but I wanted to change my life and get away from it all. I now don't even drink but I managed to escape England and move abroad 4 years ago. I wasn't happy with how the place was going and now with all of these immigrants virtually taking over I'm glad we did. My advice is to get off the coke, get off the drink, they're just ways to keep you numb and dumb to what's actually going on in this world. The more you wake up, the less damage you want to do to yourself. Coke screws your heart up, even more so in our later years. 👊

I was a regular at Gods Kitchen and Sundissential in Birmingham, we ventured once to Gatecrasher to see Paul Van dyk play a 6hour set - it was a truly horrible experience, the attitude and arrogance from the crasher kids was unbearable which was truly saddening.

It was a strange time; 90s clubbing that evolved from the warehouse raves seemed to change by the end of the decade - these superclubs had appeared in 97/98, and it became very elitist; I remember walking into Gatecrasher to watch Paul Van Dyk around that time and thinking that these Crasher kids were just the then-modern version of the new romantics, it was very "look at me", very clicky, very "this is our thing" and it went from being really cool, to really embarrassing in the space of about 3/4 years between 99-2002! The sheer volume of drugs those folks were taking was alarming, it was more extreme and in your face than in other genres of dance music, and everyone was massively off their tits, I remember the paramedics were always outside GC helping people.

Y2K was possibly the last year before it died. 2001 onwards, and that was a great year for me, was awful when looking back. The 00's were genuinely shocking.

The crasher kids annoyed the 💩 out of me. I was at crasher in Sheffield most weeks in the late 90s, and you'd have to sit and watch them walk around like they owned the place. Don't even get me started on young adults walking around with baby dummies in their mouth, sucking on them. I remember my buddy dating one of them. She was actually alright, especially when she wasn't following the herd. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some kind of killjoy. I was a full on raver, who travelled all over the uk going to all the great venues. I even spent the season in ibiza and met some truly fascinating people, but those crasher kids were something else. To say they irked me would be an understatement.😂

Then on Sunday mornings they'd all be wandering around the dead town centre in sideways drizzle looking really grey...then Gatecrasher mysteriously burnt down...twice...like a lot of other places in Sheffield at the time.
@chattyman4740
@chattyman4740 7 месяцев назад
Well, they owned the Republic, and it burned down during an era when dance music had died off massively in popularity, and it was the beginning of the financial crisis when a lot of commercial property was subject to loan book restructuring, so you have to wonder if it was heaving leveraged and then an insurance job. As you say, a lot of clubs had fires in that era.
